Addenendum
The holiday season has come and gone. I
have heard that our Christmas potluck was
a huge success. A big thank you to the or-
ganizers and to everybody for pitching in
and helping so that no one person had too
much to do or clean. We hope everybody
had a good time with family and friends
and now can concentrate on making some-
thing for the quilt show in May. While you
are planning, cutting, stitching and quilting
your project give some thought to volun-
teering for an executive position. It won't
be long before we have to elect our execu-
tive for next year!!
We have a lot to look forward to in the next
few months- the bus trip to Langford, re-
treat, the quilt show, the trip to Sister's -
We really are a very busy group. We hope
everybody takes advantage of these oppor-
tunities to get involved in the camaraderie
and fellowship that events like these
offer us. There is a different connec-
tion made with people when you
work on a committee with them and
long lasting friendships are made.
The same is true when you travel
with people or spend a few days at
retreat with them. It is a different
connection that happens than attend-
ing guild each week so if you have-
n't tried these opportunities maybe
2011 is the year to try.

FOR YOUR INFO
Our meeting this week will have Barb Round speaking on CQA
and about some spaces left in a workshop running in Campbell
River/Quadra. Please remember that we need to bring our in-
side shoes/slippers and the meeting will be at 7:00pm as usual
SHARING THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
Thanks you to everyone who donated food, gifts, money,
and time to quilt the big quilts for the hampers and all those
lovely Placemats. We had 152 placemats and table runners
for the unsponsored singles, seniors and couples. Coast Re-
alty actually buys the fresh food (bread, milk, veggies and
turkey) to go with the hampers – enough for a complete
Christmas dinner. In addition, there was enough money for
a $25 gift certificate to a grocery store plus a turkey
voucher from QF – January food supply!
Since teenagers are so difficult to buy for – they got a gift
certificate & a hat or scarf. Hopefully all items were appre-
ciated.
Once again, thank you all for your support!!!

LAST reminder regarding the LEAF BOWLS for CQA
2011 — I will be sending them this next week to Christine
Rachar , who is the interim recipient of all of our hard
work. For some it was hard to do and others found it a
breeze — I was one of the harder ones—I fought and
sweated to get those points to co-operate. I know that the
CQA 2011 attendees will each go home with one of our mas-
terpieces and wouldn’t it be great if one of OUR members
brought one home! We will have to have SHOW AND
TELL especially for them.
Another reminder: if you are at all interested in selling your
quilting treasures, be sure to read the Venue report on page
four and then attend the meeting!

Stash - Buster Quilts
Lynne Edwards
Published by David & Charles 2006
Lynne Edwards has done it again...After
writing two "Sampler Quilt
Books" ( 1996, 2000) in which she
demonstrates some quicker, easier tech-
niques, "Stash-buster
Quilts" main emphasis is
on using some of your fab-
ric stash as quickly and
easily as possible. Lack of
mind numbing technical
information makes this
book user friendly and is a
real inspiration to create
with some of that stash of
fabric. As Lynne says "the
longer a piece of fabric
stays in a stash, the more it
loses its power and attrac-
tion. It needs to be taken
out, shaken, grouped with
others that give it new life,
as it gives new life to them.
In other words we have to
use some of our collection
or it cannot grow and con-
tinue to give pleasure."
Old patterns such as Log
Cabin and Delectable Mountains are
given a new modern twist. All instruc-
tions are clearly given, with assembly
line construction constantly used. In-
triguing is Lynne's fast and accurate
method of making 'corner square'
blocks, two at a time. As well, the two
at a time 'nine patch' cuts construction
time to a minimum!
Throughout the book there are time sav-
ing techniques shown by the use of an
hourglass with a stop symbol printed on
it. Pictures of sewing shears next to
cutting or stitching information
draws your attention to extra advice,
reflecting the experience of the de-
signer, and again, helpful when sav-
ing time and effort.
The 20 projects range in size from
full size scrap quilts to stuffed pigs.
Several variations of each project
are often shown, giving a lot of
ideas on use of color. Directions
and diagrams are especially easy to
follow, and a nice touch for each
project is an explanation as to how
and why this particular design came
into being.
Lynne writes in a manner which is
easy to follow. Tidbits of interest-
ing background information are in-
cluded and a bit of humor adds en-
joyment when perusing this book.
A definite 'thumbs up' for "Stash -
Buster Quilts"!

Five Earmarks of a Good Com-
munity Research shows the following
characteristics of a good commu-
nity group:
1. The members share common
goals and know what they are.
2. The group enjoys eating and
laughing together.
3. Each member‘s gifts are appre-
ciated and valued.
4. Members participate in and con-
tribute to group projects.
5. There‘s good communication
between leadership and members.
Based on the above, wouldn‘t you
say the Comox Valley School-
house Quilters is a Great Commu-
nity Group? We get top marks in
all categories.
Five More Ways to Make our
Guild Even Better We have a great group, but since
January is a time of resolutions
and beginnings, we offer these ex-
tra ideas, in no particular order of
importance:
1. Say hello to someone you don‘t
know. Get to know them.
2. If you take the last cup of water
out of the kettle on Thursday, fill
it up and turn it on again, so the
kettle is always ready for the next
person.
3. Say thank you to one of our
guild leaders who make things run
smoothly. They put in countless
hours of work so things run
smoothly.
moving here. What she loves
about quilting is the socializing
that goes on Thursdays – but fin-
ishing the project and feeling
good about it is the best. Cur-
rently she is working on place-
mats and finishing up old pro-
jects.
Karen Kruselnicki has been liv-
ing in the Valley for 18 months,
after taking early retirement in
Edmonton so she could be closer
to the love of her life, John. (She
thinks it‘s the best move she ever
made.) Although she‘d been a
piecer for about 15 years, she
never found the time to fin-
ish her projects. Now she‘s
been quilting non-stop, and
John says she has an incur-
able disease called Quilting.
(Fortunately, John, it’s a
common disease with few
negative side-effects, aside
from empty-pocketbookitis,
but it is contagious.)
Karen‘s favorite quilting
activities center around
making gifts for friends and
family, like a recently com-
pleted
4. If you have learned a new tech-
nique or found a very helpful tip,
write it down and pass it on to
Ardythe for the newsletter.

one else, and put it into

Members Old and New Our featured members this
month are Carol Metner and
Karen Kruselnicki (new)
and Jeanette Morneau and
Barb Messer (long time
members.)
Carol Metner has lived in
the Valley for 10 months.
She‘s come here from Calgary be-
cause she didn‘t want to spend an-
other long winter in Alberta.
Carol has quilted on and off
(mostly off) for about 15 years,
but has taken it up again since

quilt for grandson Nicholas. She
also loves making quick projects
like table toppers and wall hang-
ings. In December she was trying
to finish up a batch of Christmas
projects, but in the new year she
hopes to finally finish a bed quilt
for her daughter, and perhaps
start one for her own place. With
her son‘s upcoming wedding this
summer, there may also be a
wedding quilt in the offing.
When not quilting, she loves
traveling, and has recently taken
up golf. She and John also spend
time with the four grown chil-
dren and 4 grandchildren they
share between them.
Jeanette Morneau has been a
quilter for 21 years and has lived
in the valley for 19 of those
years. Her accomplishments in-
clude winning several ribbons in
past guild shows. Most recently,
she won the Hands Across the
Water challenge with her depic-
tion of the beach at Tofino.
There are many things that she
loves about being part of the
guild: the retreats, sharing ideas
with other quilters, and working
in the guild library. She‘s cur-
rently working on applique, and
also challenging herself to use up
her old stash in interesting ways.
When she‘s not busy quilting,
she‘s busy at many other things:
walking, bike riding, skiing, gar-
dening, entertaining friends and
family, and watching her grand-
daughter play volleyball at tour-
naments.
Barb Messer, aka CozyKittens,
lived in the Valley from 1977-82,
and then returned here in 2000 as
part of her 25 year career in the
military. She learned quilting
while stationed at Cold Lake, Al-
berta, in ‗93 or ‗94 and has never
looked back, although she defi-
nitely prefers making the flimsies
to quilting them afterwards.
What she likes about being part
of the guild is the socializing, get-
ting new ideas, and seeing the
beautiful work of others during
the monthly show and tells. Cur-
rently she‘s working on many
projects, including a baby quilt,
table runners and place mats.
Barb won a blue ribbon (her first
and only!) for her Pineapple
Pocket Quilt last year at the CV Ex-
hibition.
Barb says, ―I have a wonderful hus-
band, Doug (married 33 years) and
two Muted Calico cats; Kelsa &
Spot. I love to travel, read and go
camping. It took me a year to get a
SCUBA diving certificate because I
am claustrophobic and afraid of
deep water. But I try to overcome
my fears.‖
That‘s great advice for all of us as
we tackle a new year with new pro-
jects, techniques and ideas to ex-
plore. Thanks, Barb!
Quilty Quote: ―... I really do believe that
patchwork endures because it
mirrors our lives, especially
women's lives, so well. Our
days are patchworks of activi-
ties and roles. We put a piece
of ourselves into being wives,
mothers, employees, referees,
gardeners, you name it and we
divide ourselves into it. And,
amazingly, it all comes to-
gether to create a unique and
beautiful whole. Well, so does
patchwork. It gathers a little of
this and a little of that, puts it
together with something as
simple as needle and thread
and creates a new, unique, and
beautiful whole.‖ – Malka
Dubrawsky, quoted in Quilting
Daily, an online newsletter that is put
out by Quilting Arts magazine

A TIP from Gail # 9
A product called FLEXX –RAP—a
finger protection wrap from LEE
VALLEY TOOLS in Victoria can be a
great saver for Quilters too!
1/ great for fingers in hand sewing
2/ a wrap-around for thread spools—
stop those wandering threads!
3/ get a grip on your scissors or ro-
tary cutter or pencil etc
4/ makes a great marker for the cut-
ting line on rulers
5/ and a line to follow while quilting
6/ and stop that ruler from wandering
around on slippery fabric
Gail says her roll cost less than $4.00

A report on Community Quilts—
given at December‘s General Meeting, (reprinted here to reach those members not attending that meeting)
This is an update on the charity work the guild does & also to inform new members of areas they might find
interesting. First & I think most important - this is strictly a volunteer arm of the guild. Some of us like to
do charity work & find this a way we can do it. Some of us have other charity work we do & like to spend
the time at the guild doing our own quilting. We need to respect each others needs & wishes so we can
have a happy productive time when we meet. There is room for everyone.
This committee used to be called We Care. It is now the Community Quilt committee. It includes making
quilts for Seniors at the various lodges in the Valley, Lilli House where abused women & their children can
find refuge, baby quilts for needy families at St. Joseph‘s Hospital Obstetrics & Pediatrics ward, quilts for
toddlers in the Teddies & Tots program, quilts for families that suffer from a fire, cushions & bags for mas-
tectomy cancer patients & placemats for Meals on Wheels. We also give quilts with our Xmas hampers.
As you can see this covers a lot of ground. In the past an average per year of 50 quilts for babies & 75
quilts for seniors have been donated.
We have a fund that supplies batting & backing for these quilts although many quilts are made using our
own supplies. This is from the quilt raffle at the last quilt show & a wonderful donation from a local Ro-
tary. We will be receiving money from the Quilt Show in May towards our Batting costs.
Nerissa, Gladi & Verna recently took 10 quilts, 4 wall hanging & 4 placemats to Lilli House. They are go-
ing to be used as Christmas gifts for the women. Coby & Joy delivered 25 quilts to St. Joseph‘s Hospital.
In Sept. Nerissa, & Verna took 10 quilts to ―The Views‖ Senior‘s home. They have a welcoming party the
last Tues. of the month & present the quilts or an afghan to each new member. They will be making deliv-
eries to Seniors before Christmas. Marie & Verna went to the Filberg Lodge to look at the room where a
heritage quilt is to cover the bed. They are giving $200-$300 for the making of this quilt.
There are kits made up for quilt tops. Please ask any member of the committee for help in getting kits,
backing or batting. We have easy patterns you can use too. Nerissa looks after senior‘s quilts, Gladi looks
after Tots & Teddies & cancer bags & cushions, Sharon Latham is in charge of the Xmas hamper quilts,
Margaret Yells is responsible for placemats, Joy looks after baby quilts, Verna is responsible for Lilli House
& Marie is in charge of the quilts for fire victims.
If you have any questions please ask one of the above & they will be glad to help you find your niche.
Last but not least. If you have any old blue jeans or blue jean material no smaller than a 10‖ square Marie
has been given 5 bolts of lush cord & is going to combine it with the blue jean fabric to make rag quilts.

Using Border Prints in Your Quilts
The inner border of the quilt below was created with a border print, a special type of fab-ric that usually has several stripe-like motifs printed side-by-side along the lengthwise grain. Stripes are usually coordinated, but are nearly always of different widths to offer
plenty of options for your quilts.
The border print strip is mitered at each end, which means it is cut at an angle--like a pic-ture frame. Before cutting the miters, I cut two straight border strips from the fabric and placed them right sides together, making sure the strips were aligned so that their printed
motifs matched each other perfectly.
The careful placement and angled cut gave me two border strips that were mirror images of each other. When sewn together along the angled edges the mirror images came together to
form a kaleidoscope effect. Remaining strips were cut the same way.
You can see that the print in my border strips ends at the same place in all four corners. That's fairly easy to do with a square quilt, but can be tricky with a rectangle, because the length of the top and bottom borders isn't the same as the length of side borders--so they end in different spots. I made my match-up even easier by inserting on-point star blocks be-
tween border segments all around the quilt to break up the length of the border print.
You'll find border prints from many fabric designers, but Jinny Beyer is considered the Queen of border prints--and a master of color. The border print in this quilt is one of her de-signs. The instructions for this quilt are in my book "Quick Little Quilts." It's out of print, but
usually available from Amazon resellers.

Over the many years that I have been quilting, sev-
eral general principles have applied: 1. There is no
cure for the quilting habit. 2. We all buy fabric as
though it will suddenly become unavailable next
week. 3. We spend an irrational amount of time us-
ing as little as possible of one acquired fabric. 4.
Many quilters have a soft spot for cats. We love cat
motifs in all sizes, shapes and configurations.

Quilts of Valour, Canada –
New Vancouver Island Contacts I was talking with Debby Gray of Vancouver re-
garding Quilts of Valour – Canada and discovered
that she is the only contact for the whole province
of British Columbia. What a huge job!
After much discussion and thinking about this pro-
gram for many months Judi McCallum and I de-
cided to be the contacts for Vancouver Island. We
have received two quilts already, thanks to Mau-
reen and Betty who have been strong supporters of
this program for quite some time. We also have
two more quilts from Helen in Central Island. What
a great start!
After a discussion with a Veteran about the pro-
gram, he gave me a big hug and cried on my shoul-
der. He didn‘t know that anyone would take so
much time, so much thought, and so much care to
make something so beautiful for someone like him,
who was just doing his job.
INFORMATION FROM THE QoV-
Canada Brochure
QoV Canada started with the delivery of
quilts in early 2006 to three soldiers in Ed-
monton recovering from their injuries sus-
tained in Afghanistan. By mid 2009
quilters across Canada have made over
400 quilts for our soldiers. These quilts
continue to be presented to our military
personnel injured in the line of duty. Quilt-
ing contacts have been organized across
Canada to receive your completed quilts.
These quilters are connected with our mili-
tary contact who are able to distribute the
quilts to our soldiers.
Quilters, whether working on their own or
with guilds and friends can use Quilts of
Valour – Canada as a means of getting
their quilted hugs to our brave men and
women.
QUILT REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum size is 50” x 60”, maximum size approximately 72” x 96”.
- Fabrics must be good quality 100% cotton. This includes flannel.
- There is no set pattern required for the quilts, but do consider a Canadian theme. Including the Maple Leaf motif.
- That backing fabric should also be 100% cotton, including flannels. Coordinating the quilt backing to the quilt top is not essen-tial, but does always look more present-able.
- Please label your quilt.
- Quality in workmanship is a must. Keep in mind these quilts may take extensive use, and frequent washing.
- It is encouraged to include a self-addressed stamped postcard from the quilter or guild to allow for the acknowledgment of the delivery of the quilt.
- May also include a letter of comfort and support to go with the quilt.
- Quilt tops are also accepted. They will be passed along to a volunteer who can finish the quilt.
If you would like more information about
the QoV – Canada program please let me
know.
