KEY CLUB
Hope everyone is having a fabulous day! Things are definitely starting to get
more hectic as seniors face deadlines for everything and as everyone's
academic classes begin to get more intense. In the midst of all this, it's great
to have Key Club so that we can remember to serve the community and
consequently hone our leadership skills.
So far, we have a participated in a wide array of projects. First of all, a good
number of Key Clubbers have been faithfully volunteering at the HOPE soup
kitchen. We have also initiated plans for volunteering at Sound Shore and we
will soon be able to begin doing so. Furthermore, we have carried out several
seasonal projects. In October, a lot of individuals participated in the UNICEF
Trick-or-Treat project and we were able to raise over $300. In the beginning of
November, we conducted a Funniest Teacher Photo Contest in honor of Key
Club Week, where we aimed to raise awareness of Key Club. Two Saturdays
before Thanksgiving, a small group of Key Clubbers helped to deliver turkeys to
a soup kitchen that would be given to the underprivileged families that came to
HOPE every week. The following week, many members created handmade
Thanksgiving cards, which were then given out to senior residents at the Sound
Shore.
We have done a lot together as a club and we have a lot ahead of us. In
December itself, we planned to hold a toy drive, collect materials such as
clothing for underprivileged families, sing Christmas carols at the soup kitchen
and attend a Kiwanis holiday party. I hope everyone enjoyed last month of
2010 giving and receiving with our jubilant Christmas spirits.
Wishing an amazing, heart-warming first-month-of-the-year to everyone,
Emily George

At White Plains High School on
Sunday, October 24th, a walk was
organized to help provide money for
people with Diabetes. My friend, Jean-
luc, and I arrived just in time to
volunteer. We carried small crates full of
bottled water to the food service table,
put up signs with the sponsors on them
along the walking course, and set up a
service table which would be used to
help serve drinks to the walkers. After
that, Jean-luc and I treated ourselves to
free bagels, and listened to music the DJ
was playing. Just when the walk was
about to start, a huge gust of wind
knocked down the balloon-arc entrance.
Jean-luc and I had to hold up the arc for
thirty minutes. It hurt, but it was worth
it.

At the end of the walk, all the attendees ate
sandwiches provided by the Diabetes Association.
Wristbands and materials were on sale to benefit the
association. My friend and I decided to buy some things to
support the cause. I bought a bandana and Jean-luc bought
a water canteen. The day ended well; I really enjoyed
seeing all the people who took the time to support those in
need.

Key Club Week
Key Club Week occurs annually during the first school
week of November and this year it took place from
November 1-5. Throughout Key Club Week, Key Clubbers
from around the world celebrate service to their homes,
schools, and communities as well as recognize others. The
purpose of Key Club Week is to get the word out about
Key Club and make Key Club a household name. Each day
of the week has a different activity. Monday is "Show your
K in every way" in which Key Clubbers advertise and wear
their Key Club attire. Tuesday is "Kudos to the Key
players" in which Key Clubbers thank those who contribute
to events and meetings. Wednesday is "Connect the Ks" in
which Key Clubbers connect with the various branches of
Kiwanis. The last organized day, Thursday, is "Bring a
friend to Key Club" in which members bring friends to an
event or meeting. Friday is "Your way" in which each Key
Club does their own thing! For the past three years, we
have been having our annual Funniest Teacher Photo
Contest! This year, Mr. Maresco won the event and we
raised over $60 which will go towards UNICEF and our club
account, which goes for various service projects
throughout the year. Hope everyone had an awesome Key
Club Week and if you didn't celebrate it in 2010, be sure to
go all out this year!

The Tri-K Meeting
8
November 9th was the annual Tri-K meeting held at
the Pine Restaurant in the Bronx. Like every year, it was a
lot of fun. It is a different atmosphere than our weekly Key
Club meetings in Room 1113. At this meeting, there are
adults who have been Key Clubbers when they were in
high school and now hold high positions in Kiwanis
International. They have cared about service their entire
lives and love to be involved in their communities. They
were genuinely interested in getting to know all the Key
Clubbers from all the high schools that attended and our
projects.
In this meeting, our new Key Club co-adviser Ms.
Debbie got inducted! At the Tri-K, there were great
speeches, people, and fantastic food. Thank you Kiwanis,
we really appreciate it.
For all of you younger Key Clubbers, I strongly
recommend that you to go to the next Tri-K meeting. The
Tri-K is full of kind and happy people who will show you
what Key Club is really about. It is a fantastic experience.

Holiday Sing-Along
In December 2010, Key Club went caroling!
It has become an annual event we have done in
association with Oliv ia Watkins and her family. This
year we had more carolers and we sang at the
Boys and Girls Club of New Rochelle and in the
soup kitchen at HOPE Community services.
We all had a lot of fun, singing songs like
Jingle Bell Rock, Silent Night, Jingle Bells, Deck the
Halls, O Come All Ye Faithful. We even danced in
a conga line! Many thanks to the Watkins family;
we hope to do it again next year!
