VP Technical - Dave DexterWell the Chapter’s Christmas Party is past

and I hope everyone had a great time. As I had conflicting schedules, I am sure I missed a fun time. I wish to thank Eric Leman, Dave Madson and the other Board members who put this year’s program and meal together. I’ll let them tell you more about the work of the others in their articles.

Mark your calendars as there are two great seminars coming up: one in February and another in March. The first is being presented by CHT (Compliant Healthcare Technologies). It will be a 3-day course, February 5-7, 2008, on ASSE 6005 requirements, a must know for those actively involved in medical gas work. You should have seen the promotional information in recent e-mails and within this newsletter. The Chapter has partnered with Frank A. Eisenhower, PE, LEED®, Columbus operations Manager for Karpinski Engineering, and CHT to host this seminar. This program is being offered to those interested in obtaining certification in the ASSE 6000 Standard. While this is not necessary for professional engineers, it is for others per oRC (ohio Revised

Code) 4104.46. Installers, inspectors, verifiers, construction contracting maintenance personnel, and instructors for design installation and testing of nonflammable medical gas and vacuum piping systems shall obtain certification. This seminar will provide attendees the opportunity to obtain a certification as part of the seminar without additional cost. It will also provide every attendee an in-depth look at the standards involved in medical gas systems. Space is limited for this opportunity, so make your reservation and plan to attend. The seminar will be hosted at Korda/Nemeth Engineering’s office in Conference Room 3.

The other seminar and Chapter official function will be March 9, 2008. This seminar will be on Siphonic Roof Drainage which will provide attendees an opportunity for an in-depth look at this engineered system with hands-on design using Mifab’s free software. Putting any official Chapter function on takes time with associated cost. The

schedule calls for Volume 1 to be complete and mailed by the end of 2008.

The COASPE Board would like to say a special thanks to the following companies for their sponsoring the centerpieces and decorations for the Christmas party: BWA South, Inc., Campbell Equipment Co., Lowder Sales, Inc., Midwest Spec., LLC , Nibco, Inc., RepSource, LLC, Whitfill-McCarthy, LLC. All of the ladies in attendance were given a beautiful plant to take home.

One other item I need to bring up is reservations for our Chapter events. If you make a reservation for a lunch meeting or any of our other events, you are expected to pay for the reservation, whether you attend or not. If you make a reservation and cannot attend, by calling and cancelling at least one day in advance so we can inform the restaurant or caterer, you will not be charged.

Mark SimpsonChapter President

Chapter has partnered with Mifab and RepSource to keep attendees’ cost for low, while allowing the Chapter to generate funds necessary for Chapter activities. This seminar is planned to get the attendees actively involved in designing a siphonic system using the available software. Several manufacturers are offering free software and some short seminars. However, having attended other seminars and designing systems using such software, a hands-on practical application along with repeated use of the software is necessary to become proficient in designing these systems. While the principles outlined in ASPE’s Siphonic Design Standard are the basis for all siphonic system design, each manufacturer’s software will have its own little quirks. Depending on the manufacturer, you as the designer select what to base your design on; familiarity and practice with manufacturer’s software will be required.

Contract documents can make or break a construction project! Learn about the NEW contract documents Feb. 26 from the

experts who crafted them…

The contract documents you and your management team execute at the outset of each construction project identify who is responsible for what – and when.

A recent overhaul of these documents has resulted in a whole new world of contracts in which there are multiple “standard” contracts out there to choose from. Because the assignment of risk varies significantly between the various documents, you need to be familiar with all of them… ConsensusDOCS, AIA 2007 Documents, and Digital Practice Documents are part of the new vocabulary you and your management team will use on an every-day basis.

On February 26 bring your management team to learn all about the new construction contract documents from the experts who actually developed them, as the Ohio

Construction Conference welcomes:

Michael D. Tarullo, esq., national chair of the American Bar Association Forum on the Construction Industry, will facilitate the session.

Donald Gregory, esq., legal counsel for ASA national, representing the interests of the subcontractor.

Teresa Magnus representing the construction owner perspective as a member of the Construction Users Round Table (CURT).

Robert Middlebrooks representing the voice of the design professional as a member of the AIA national Contract Documents Committee.

Brian Perlberg, esq., senior legal counsel for AGC national, representing the voice of the general contractor.

Register today…space is limited! www.bx.org/events/ConstConference_index.html

Design of siphonic systems is an iterative process, selecting pipe sizes, length and configurations to design a balanced system. While a system can be designed by hand calculation, computers and software make the time necessary for the design shorter and eliminate errors in the calculations. The more time spent in hands-on training with the software, the better your chances of an appropriate and acceptable design. This seminar is a must for those interested in obtaining LEED® points using innovative design in developing projects. The use of the siphonic system conserves materials, eliminates the need for slope, and reduces conflict with other mechanical and electrical systems. This seminar is scheduled for the Little Turtle Golf Club in Westerville. Seating is limited to the first 75 people, so make your reservation early. You may wish to attend this seminar even if you may have had a limited opportunity to try another manufacturer’s software.

Well, enough about seminars. Our first meeting in 2008 will be about…you guessed it, Siphonic

Roof Drainage; wrong. our speakers will be from the City of Columbus, Mr. Keith Wagenknecht, Chief Building Official and Mr. Larry Caito, Building (Plumbing) Inspection Supervisor. They will be presenting scheduled changes to the plan review and permitting process in areas served by Columbus. These changes will be effective in February 2008. Come prepared to ask questions about this topic or other issues relative to the City of Columbus’ Building Department.

As Siphonic Roof Drainage has become a “Hot Topic” this month, with other manufacturers’ providing mini seminars, it was appropriate to address the changes occurring with the Columbus Building Department. Therefore our scheduled speakers, Mr. Michael Whiteside (CEo of Mifab) and Mr. Tom Babcock (Mifab Regional Manager), graciously agreed to step aside. They will be in attendance at our meeting, so feel free to ask them any questions concerning Siphonic Roof Drainage. Also, in keeping with the topic of Siphonic Roof Drainage, several manufacturers will have “table top” displays to show their products and provide literature and/or software relative to their particular system. It is only a matter of time before you will be designing and specifying this unique engineered system on one of your projects.

Given our recent attendance numbers, the Board is actively investigating locations for future meetings that can handle our growth. While, we will probably remain at Barley’s this season, the Chapter must look ahead. If anyone has a suggestion for a centrally located meeting place with good food and sufficient room for our membership, please let someone on the Board know your thoughts.
