January 2004. The new year has begun! What does it hold? My thought is whatever you want it to hold! Early in 2004 will bring about a brief but intense challenge to world co-operation. Inspired communication will help out and secret deals will be made. Social precedents will be dissolved but at great expense or with corruption involved. An important inter-national treaty will be dissolved or a new one may emerge making old agreements dysfunctional. The rift that happened between Europe and America could turn into a gaping chasm. Previous international agreements are likely to come unstuck or be superseded. This will have serious implications for Australia’s role in America’s Alliance of the Willing. The inter party split in Tony Blair’s cabinet will escalate. 2003 saw huge Peace marches and we can expect more. The intensive questioning of the evidence that justified war will see further revelations about the real reasons for war. When Saturn was in this same position 29 years ago Gough Whitlam was dismissed from office, an unprecedented event. This time around the Labour Party is likely to suffer more internal power struggles. Howard’s greatest challenge will be the information that may come to light about secret commitments undertaken on behalf of Australia. In 1945 Little Boy was dropped on Hiroshima and Fat Man was dropped on Nagasaki. These nuclear bombs began a new era in the terror of war. Now it is the Saturn return and nuclear terror looms again. Nuclear proliferation will be a burning issue for 2004 and will feed into the growth spurts of the Peace Movement. ONE DAYOne day you finally knew

what you had to do and you began…though the voices around you keptshouting their bad advice… thoughthe whole house began to tremble, andyou felt the old tug at your ankles."Mend my life!" each voice cried. But you didn't stop. You knew whatyou had to do… though the windpried with its stiff fingers at the veryfoundat ions… though the i rmelancholy was terrible.

It was already late enough, and a wild night, and the road was fullof fallen branches and stones.

But little by little, as you lefttheir voices behind, the stars began toburn through the sheets of clouds, andthere was a new voice that you slowlyrecognised as your own, that kept youcompany as you strode deeper anddeeper into the world, determined todo the only thing you could do--determined to save the only life youcould save. YOUR OWN!

JANE FONDA’S SPEECHNational Women's LeadershipSummit Washington, D.C. 2003

Before I turned sixty Ithought I was a feminist. I was in away – I worked to register women tovote, I supported women gettingelected. I brought gender issues intomy movie roles, I encouraged womento get strong and healthy, I read thebooks we've all read. I had it in myhead and partly in my heart, yet Ididn't fully get it. See, although I'vealways been financially independent, and professionally and sociallysuccessful, behind the closed doors ofmy personal life I was still turningmyself in a pretzel so I'd be loved byan alpha male. I thought if I didn'tbecome whatever he wanted me to be,I'd be alone, and then, I wouldn't exist.

There is not the time nor isthis the place to explain why this wastrue, or why it is such a commontheme for so many otherwise strong, independent women. Nor is it the timeto tell you how I got over it. What'simportant is that I did get over it.Early on in my third act I found myvoice and, in the process, I have endedup alone but not really. You see, I'mwith myself and this has enabled meto see feminism more clearly. It's hardto see clearly when you're a pretzel.

I want to tell you brieflysome of what I have learned in thisfirst part of my third act and how itrelates to what, I think, needs tohappen in terms of a revolution.Because we can't just talk aboutwomen being at the table - it's too latefor that - we have to think in terms ofthe shape of the table. Is ithierarchical or circular (meta-phorically speaking)? We have tothink about the quality of the menwho are with us at the table, theculture that is hovering over the tablethat governs how things are decidedand in whose interests. This is not justabout glass ceilings or politics asusual. This is about revolution, and Ihave finally gotten to where I can saythat word and know what I mean by itand feel good about it because I see, now, how the future of the earth andeverything on it including men andboys depends on this happening.

Let me say something aboutmen: obviously, I've had to do a lot ofthinking about men, especially theones who've been important in mylife, and what I've come to realize ishow damaging patriarchy has been forthem. And all of them are smart, good

men who want to be considered the"good guys." But the Male BeliefSystem, that compartmentalized, hierarchical, ejaculatory, and centricpower structure that is Patriarchy, isfatal to the hearts of men, to empathyand relationship.

Yes, men and boys receiveprivilege and status from patriarchy, but it is a poisoned privilege for whichthey pay a heavy price. If traditional, patriarchal socialization takes aim atgirls' voices, it takes aim at boys'hearts - makes them lose the deepest, most sensitive and empathic parts ofthemselves. Men aren't even allowedto be depressed, which is why theyengage so often in various forms ofself-numbing, from sex to alcohol, drugs to gambling and workaholism.Patriarchy strikes a Faustian bargainwith men.

Patriarchy sustains itself bybreaking relationship. I'm referringhere to real relationship, the showing-up kind, not the "I'll stay with himcause he pays the bills, or because ofthe kids, or because if I don't I willcease to exist," but relationship whereyou, the woman, can acknowledgeyour partner's needs while sim-ultaneously acknowledging andtending to your own.

Now, every group that's beenoppressed has its share of UncleToms, and we have our Aunt Toms. Icall them ventriloquists for thepatriarchy. I won't name names but weall know them. They are women inwhom the toxic aspects of masculinityhold sway. We need to understand itand be able to explain it to others, butit means, I think, that what we need tolook at is "is that woman intactemotionally," ..has she had to forfeither empathy gene somewhere alongthe way for whatever reason?

And then, of course, there arewhat Eve Ensler calls Vagina-Friendly men, who choose to remainemotionally literate. It's not easy forthem - look at the names they getcalled: wimp, pansy, pussy, soft, limp, momma's boy. Men don't like to beconsidered "soft" on anything, whichis why more don't choose to join us inthe circle. Actually, most don't havethe choice to make. You know why?Because when they are real little likefive years or younger, boys internalisethe message of what it takes to be a"real man." Sometimes it comesthrough their fathers who beat it intothem. Sometimes it comes because noone around them knows how to

connect with their emotions (This is agenerational thing). Sometimes itcomes because our culture rips boysfrom their mothers before they aredevelopmentally ready. Sometimes itcomes because boys are teased atschool for crying. Sometimes it's thesubliminal messages from teachersand the media. It can be a specifictrauma that shuts them down. But, Ican assure you, it is true to someextent of many if not most men, andwhen the extreme version of itmanifests itself in our nation's leaders, beware!

Another thing that I'velearned is that there is a fundamentalcontradiction not just betweenpatriarchy and relationship, butbetween patriarchy and Democracy.Pa t r i a rchy masquerades asDemocracy, but it's an anathema. Howcan it be democracy when someonehas to always be above someone else, when women, who are a majority, livewithin a social construct thatdiscriminates against them, keepsthem from having their full humanrights?

But just because Patriarchyhas ruled for 10,000 years since thebeginning of agriculture, doesn't makeit inevitable. Maybe at some earlierstage in human evolution, Patriarchywas what was needed just for thespecies to survive. But today, there'snothing threatening the human speciesbut humans. We've conquered ourpredators, we've subdued naturealmost to extinction, and there are nomore frontiers to conquer or to escapeinto so as to avoid having to deal withthe mess we've left behind. Frontiershave always given capitalism,Patriarchy's economic face, a way toavoid dealing with its shortcomings.Well, we're having to face them nowand inevitably - especially when wehave leaders who suffer from toxicmasculinity - that leads to war, theconquering of new markets, and thedestruction of the earth.

However, it is altogetherpossible, that we are on the verge of atectonic shift in paradigms - that whatwe are seeing happening todayare the paroxysms, the final terribledeath throes of the old, no longerworkable, no longer justifiablesystem. Look at it this way: it'sPatriarchy's third act and we have tomake sure it's its last.

It's possible that the extreme,neo-conservative version of Patriarchywhich makes up our current Executive

branch will over-play its hand andcause the house of cards to collapse. We know that this new "preventivewar" doctrine will put us on apermanent war footing. We know there can't be guns andbutter, right? We learned withVietnam. We know that a Pandora'sbox has been opened in the MiddleEast and that the administration is notprepared for the complexities that areemerging. We know that friends arebecoming foes and angry youngMuslims with no connection toAlQaeda are becoming terrorists ingreater numbers. We know that withthe new tax plan the rich will be betteroff and the rest will be poorer. Weknow what happens when poor youngmen and women can only getjobs by joining the military and whathappens when they come home anddiscover that the day after Congresspassed the "Support Our Troops"Resolution, $25 billion was cut fromthe VA budget. We know that already, families of servicemen have to go onwelfare and are angry about it.

So, as Eve Ensler says, wehave to change the verbs fromobliterate, dominate, humiliate, toliberate, appreciate, celebrate. Wehave to make sure that head and heartcan be reunited in the body politic, and relationship and democracy canbe restored.

We need to understand thedepth and breadth of what a shift to anew, feminine paradigm would mean, how fundamentally central it is toevery single other thing in the world. We win, everything wins, includingboys, men, and the earth. We have toreally understand this and be able tomake it concrete for others. So ourchallenge is to commit ourselves tocreating the tipping point and theturning point. The time is ripe tolaunch a unified national movement, acampaign, a tidal wave, built aroundissues and values, not candidates. That's why V-Day, The White HouseProject and their many allies arepartnering to hold a national women'sconvention somewhere in theheartland, next June of 2004. Itspurpose will be to inspire andmobilize women and vagina-friendlymen around the 2004 elections and tobuild a new movement that willcoalesce our energies and forcesaround a politic of caring.

The convention will putforward a fresh, clear, and conciseplatform of issues, and build the spirit,

energy and power base to hold thecandidates accountable for them. There will be a diversity of womenfrom across the country who willparticipate in the mobilization. Therewill be a special focus on involvingyoung women. There will be a varietyof per formers and ar t i s t sacknowledging that culture plays apowerful role in political action. There will be a concurrent internetmobilization. There will be a caravan,a rolling tour across the country, ofdiverse women leaders, celebrities andactivists who will work with localorganizers to build momentum, signpeople up, register them to vote, getthem organized and leave behind atool kit for further mobilizationthrough the election and beyond. Thismovement will be a volcano that willerupt in a flow of soft, hot, empathic, breathing, authentic, vagina-friendly,relational lava that will encirclepatriarchy and smother it. We will bethe flood and we'll be Noah's ark.'All that is required for evil to prevail

is for good men to do nothing'Edmund Burke (1729-1797),British writer and politician.

HAPPINESSShe is 92 years old, petite,

well poised, and proud. She is fullydressed each morning by eighto'clock, with her hair fashionablycoifed, and her makeup perfectlyapplied, in spite of the fact she islegally blind.

Today she has moved to anursing home. Her husband of 70years recently passed away, makingthis move necessary.

After many hours of waitingpatiently in the lobby of the nursinghome, where I am employed, shesmiled sweetly when told her roomwas ready. As she manoeuvred herwalker to the elevator, I provided avisual description of her tiny room, including the eyelet curtains that hadbeen hung on her window.

"I love it," she stated with theenthusiasm of an eight-year-oldhaving just been presented with a newpuppy.

"Mrs. Jones, you haven't seenthe room... just wait," I said.

Then she spoke these wordsthat I will never forget:

"That does not have anythingto do with it," she gently replied.

"Happiness is something youdecide on ahead of time. Whether Ilike my room or not, does not dependon how the furniture is arranged. It ishow I arrange my mind. I havealready decided to love it. It is adecision I make every morning when Iwake up. I have a choice. I can spendthe day in bed recounting thedifficulty I have with the parts of mybody that no longer work, or I can getout of bed and be thankful for theones that do work. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I willfocus on the new day and all of thehappy memories I have stored away...just for this time in my life.”

The management of humanhealth and social responsibilities, policy making and productiontechniques will be an area for deepongoing trans-formation. This datesfrom seeds planted in the 1960s, thesexual revolution, the healthrevolution and the birth of thecomputer age.

Jupiter and Saturn met inTaurus in May 2000 and this set thetheme, related to the state of ourplanet, in particular the surface levelwhich allows a harvest and landownership. Earth’s resources requiresolid structuring and protection tofulfil the growing needs of the humancommunity. Also early geneticengineering debates, warnings andserious reports about climate change.Between May and September therewill be a breakthrough, perhaps agenuine attempt to work with theinherent nature of the land is coming. You can’t drought proof Australia. The Taurus theme means that Earth’sresources are increasingly seen as asource of growth and prosperity. Alsothe most unpleasant changes are likelyto be earth changes and linked todestructive business and agriculturalpractices. We have the opportunityfor easy improvement.

Not just genetic engineeringbut also the huge environmentaldamage that comes with war will beon the agenda for 2004. Also aconnection may be made betweenpoor air quality from lack of pollutioncontrols, genetic research and strangenew diseases. New treaties, agreements and licensing rules willtake shape from May to September, all designed to restore and protect theland upon which we depend.

Business practices are alsolikely to be overhauled in the sameperiod. A greater emphasis on goodcommon sense in business will come.Agricultural reform is likely in Marchand April 2004.

What dreams were youweaving in 1997 because a magicalsynergy of shared vision can take youcloser to your dreams now.

As we enter 2004 we enter abrand new vista on the mysterioussign of Pisces (water). Trail blazingplanet Uranus plays the chords ofocean i c consc iousnes s , o fremembering pure water as our most

precious resource. There is likely tobe a deep sense of outrage likely to bemade more volatile by the suddeninsights of Uranus. The emphasis onwater signs in 2004 suggests that puredrinking water, uncontaminated food, oceans and what lies beneath themand the ground waters of the earth willall be areas requiring greater attention.

New seeds for new actionwill address the needs of children andfamilies. Harsh realities exposed orhealth crises will activate supportivenetworks for those in need.

The world community willhave another chance to get somethingright with regard to the Great BarrierReef and protecting it from fishing.Redrafting policies to protect theReef’s resources, to change theAtlantic Fisheries Policy andredrafting the Peace Process in theMiddle East will make progress inMarch April 2004.

George W. Bush can expectmany more reality checks regardingthe actual reasons and the costs of thewar. His relationship with the oil andenergy cartel that supported hiselection may undermine his position, particularly since the collapsed multi-national, Enron was his largestcontributed. The last time Saturn wasin this position President Nixonresigned under a cloud of controversy. Will history repeat itself?

D a m a g e t o t h eMesopotamian Basin is reachingmounting health crises. Damage hasbeen enormous since the first GulfWar, many forms of contaminationare linked to war. The use of depleteduranium has left radiological hot spotsacross Kuwait and Iraq. These arelinked to health problems and birthdefects. 60 million barrels of oil werepoured into the deserts of Kuwait thathave poisoned 40% of theunderground water. Expect to hearmore about uranium and chemicalpollutants in 2004 with a majorrevelation in mid July. A can ofworms called radiation poisoningcould be opened wide this year andhealth problems will be the target ofpublic furore.

Pisces rules peace. This willshow in election campaigns. Wagingpeace entered the language ofpossibility coined by Dr Muller.Huge peace movements will be anongoing theme and a dialogue hasbegun that will its way into politics.Parties brave enough to champion this

will build popular support and willbring more women into leading roles.

‘All means prove but a bluntinstrument if they have not behindthem a living spirit.’ World changingscientist Albert Einstein wrote thesewords and they state the case forastrological fire. Fire is the force ofSpirit. Yet too much fire can alsodestroy life and so fiery passions andbeliefs have a very destructivepotential, destruction such asterrorism and war based on ferventbeliefs. Religion and highereducation will also continue to havetheir share of turmoil for years asserious transformation continues.Pluto was near the sun and the shadowside of the eclipse fell across SAwhich coincided with the worst firesfor a century. The astrological set upsuggests that the establishment of anuclear dump in SA would be aregressive move for Australia. Theongoing drought in NSW is unlikelyto break before March when theweather pattern holds the potential fora wet season. The water signsignature might mean that in trueAustralian style, floods will followdroughts.

Since water symbolises theFeminine energies of receptivity, inspiration, fertility, intuition, sensitive, healing and spirituality, there is reason to hope that a genuinechange of heart will occur on a widescale. The desire to heal our ailingplanet on which we depend, mayslowly balance the desire for materialgain. It is a respect for the moremysterious and subtle aspects of lifethat will be linked to this change ofheart. Again a gem from Einstein:the most beautiful experience we canhave is the mysterious. It is thefundamental emotion that stands at thecradle of true art and true science.Christine Broadbent, kindly excerptedfrom Astrolog which contains tons moreinfo Highly recommended.
