SOURIS SCHOOL NEWSLETTER http://schools.shmb.ca/sci. Number 10, January 18, 2013 NEWS FROM MR. WILLIAMS Isn’t this incredibly strange weather! Tuesday morning it was -25˚C with a windchill making it feel like -35˚C. Tuesday night, coming home from a basketball game in Killarney it was +3˚C and we drove through pouring rain for a large part of the trip. That is a 28˚C weather swing in 12 hours. You gotta love a Manitoba winter. Once again it is Kindergarten registration time. We encourage people to have their registrations in by February 10 th as Divisional budget numbers are finalized/approved at the end of February. For staffing purposes we need the numbers to be as accurate as possible to ensure that we receive the appropriate numbers of staff for the upcoming year. KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION The school is now accepting registration for Kindergarten students for the 2013-2014 school year. Parents who have children of Kindergarten age are asked to register these children with the school secretary between 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday at the school office. Parents are asked to bring their child’s birth certificate when they come to register, so we can make a copy for our files. Children must be five years of age on or before December 31 st , 2013. Anyone who is aware of neighbors and friends who may have children ready to begin Kindergarten in the fall are asked to pass the message on to them to assist with our school planning. the building. At the same time we took the opportunity to run a Lock Down drill for the entire building. Administration held assemblies for all students prior to the Lock Down and answered all questions as best as possible. Please take the opportunity to discuss with your child/children what occurred and what the plan is at the school in case of such an event occurring. Thank you to all the coaches and managers of our basketball programs at the school. We are presently running a Jr. Boys team, two Jr. Girls teams, a JV girls team, a JV boys team, a Varsity girls team, and a Varsity boys team. We have approximately 80 students participating on these teams and 8 staff members involved in these programs. Have a great week.

News from the Superintendent January, 2013 We would like to extend a warm welcome back and a Happy New Year to everyone from Southwest Horizon School Division. It is our hope that you all had a peaceful holiday season and spent time with family and friends. The school year has gone by quickly, and our senior year students are studying hard for their first semester exams. Basketball season is well underway, and schools are beginning to go on their annual ski trips. Many of our teachers are also planning for spring activities such as camping, band or sporting events for their students. We encourage all of our students to experience as many school activities as possible to immerse themselves into the culture of their schools. As all parents of graduates know, the K – 12 years go by very quickly, and some of the best memories of school are made during band, sports and fieldtrips. As an educator, I cannot say that I ever had a former student thank me for what I considered a “great” lesson in class, but I had many students express gratitude for taking them camping or to a tournament. Encourage your child to get all that they can

out of their school years to make memories that will last a lifetime. The school year is well underway, but please don’t forget to keep in close touch with your child’s teacher throughout the entire school year. While we continually rely on electronic means to communicate, we don’t want to lose that personal contact which is so essential to building positive relationships. We are in the business of learning, and positive relationships are at the heart of everything we do in our schools. Student success is only possible if the school, students and parents are working together as a cohesive team to support your child. Take the time to call your school if you have any concerns regarding your child’s education or experience. Our schools will welcome your input. Speaking of input, our Board of Trustees is engaged in goal and budget planning for next year. This planning process really begins every November for our Trustees. We welcome all stakeholder input into this process through our divisional website, in media releases and at our annual AGM meetings held in March. Student, staff, Trustees, R.M. and Town Council members and community members at large are invited to attend our AGM to review our budget proposals for the upcoming year and discuss relevant educational issues and trends in our area. This process of stakeholder involvement continues year round in our schools through Parent Councils. These groups give parents a chance to become more involved in the fabric of their child’s school, and we all benefit from more involvement in the education of our children. Parent Councils may be offering thoughts and opinions on school planning and budgeting, assisting with various school events to enrich the lives of the students, assisting with fundraising and goal setting and being an integral part of the school community. If your school has a Parent Council, please feel free to become involved at any time of the year. If your school does not have an active Parent Council, feel free to contact your school principal to get more information on

Page 3: January 18, 2013

establishing a Parent Council in your child’s school. Again, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to welcome all students, staff and parents back in the New Year, and we look forward to continuing to work together to enrich the educational experience of our students. Brad Kyle, Superintendent Southwest Horizon School Division CAREER EXPLORATION NEWS Semester 2 will start Monday, February 4. Please see me if you would like to make changes or if you would like a copy of your timetable for next semester.

The 2013 Explore Program is a five-week summer intensive language course for students 16 years of age or older wanting to learn or improve their French language skills and to discover its culture. If any Grade 12 student is seriously considering any of these post secondary institutions, these days are an excellent way to gather valuable information for your fall attendance. Parents and students are encouraged to take part in the interactive tours and special presentations, which are all, geared to the success of the future students. HOOPS Varsity Girls Basketball

Once again Mother Nature played havoc with the Varsity Girls home tournament, The Sabres Shootout over the weekend. All games were cancelled on Friday, however, four teams were able to make it Saturday to play. Our girls opened the day with a 65-39 victory over Elton.

Page 4: January 18, 2013

It was by far the ladies most complete game of the season as they played extremely well against the 7th ranked Sabres. Sara Palson led the way with 17 points and 9 boards, while Emily Tuttosi and Sarah McKenna added 15 each. In the last game of the day the girls played Major Pratt (Russell). The ladies came out a bit flat and didn't shoot particularly well, but still managed a 63-41 win. The Sarah's led the way for the Sabres as McKenna hooped 16 points, two more than Palson. Chanel Becker added 12. On Tuesday the ladies hosted Killarney in Zone play. The ladies cruised to a 68-14 victory. Jessie Robbins had 8 points, Mac Rowat 7, and Emily 6 points to lead the team. The girls are off to Treherne this weekend for tournament play this weekend before hosting a huge game next Tuesday at 6:45 versus the #1 ranked Boissevain Broncos. Come out and pack the place to cheer on the Sabres! Team members: Emily Tuttosi, Amy Tuttosi, Chanel Becker, Amber Doyle, Mac Rowat, Sara McKenna, Stacey Sherritt, Lane Fraser, Hannah Cooke, Emma Boisvert, Alissa Swaenepoel, Jessie Robbins, Sarah Palson, Tara Farmer, and manager Raeleigh Logan. The girls are currently ranked #2 in the province.
