A Message from Fr. Sebastian’s Desk:

Call of God

We ignore it as pious talk or platitude when we hear that you and I are called by God. Or we can brush it aside when we hear the discussion on the universal call to holiness. Talking about spiritual matters can even elicit ridicule depending on the audience.

However, today’s scripture brings before us the subtle ways and means through which God is communicating to us, or the way God is calling us. We may wonder why Samuel mistook God’s voice for that of his master Eli, who was a priest (Samuel 3). Allegorically, it gives us the message that there are subtle ways through which God communicates to us.

When we are told that we are blessed to be initiated into the communion of the Church at baptism, we may not easily be convinced by the argument. Only when we look back and see the working of the grace of God in so many ways and at so many critical moments of our life, we will be convinced of the providential ways through which we were guided by Him.

In the Gospel according to John, we come across the incident of the two disciples of John the Baptist experiencing Christ when invited for an ‘open house’ with Him. We know that the Son of Man had no place to lay down his head. But it was a game changer in their lives. One of them was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter. Andrew could immediately convince his own brother Simon to follow Jesus; such was the intense experience he had of Jesus. And it was to this Simon that Jesus entrusted the keys of the Kingdom. What a way to respond to God’s call!

Reflecting on the call of God, I am reminded of a message circulating in the social media about the need to be grateful to the call of God every moment of our life. This message invites us to be grateful to the call of God, always!

“The qualification that gave you a job is the same qualification someone has who still does not have a job. Be grateful. The prayer that God answered for you, is the same prayer others have been praying but without success. Be grateful. The road you use safely on a daily basis is the same road where many others lost their precious lives. Be grateful. The place where God blessed you, is the same place other people too worship in, yet their lives are still in discord. Be grateful. The bed you used in the hospital, you got healed and were discharged, is the same bed many other people breathed their last. Be grateful. The rain that made your field produce good crops is the same rain that devastated someone else's field. Be grateful. Be grateful because whatever you have is not by your power, your might, your talent or your qualifications, but it's just the "Grace of God." HE is the giver of everything you have. For everything you have, be Grateful.”

Spiritual Communion Prayer

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love you above all things and I desire to receive you in my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,

Come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace you as if you were already there

And unite myself wholly to you.

Never permit me to be separated from you.

Amen.

Y unirme totalmente a ti.
