  • LETTER FROM DEACON DAN DASHNER We welcome Deacon Dan Dashner back to St. Angela Merici Parish as he completes his final formation for the priesthood. If you have previously read this initial Story of my Life, you can skip this information and go directly to the update. I was born in the Mid-Western State of Michigan. I had a very blessed childhood and was raised in a very devote & loving Catholic Family. Dad was a cradle borne Catholic and Mom was a convert. The first time I thought that I might have a call to the priesthood was shortly after finishing 8th grade when I had to make the decision of either going to the seminary or continuing my education in a public school. After some time of discernment, I decided that a priestly life was not what God had intended for me and so I continued public education. In my senior year, shortly before graduating, A Marine Corps recruiter visited our school looking for warm bodies. I liked what I heard and enlisted in the Marine Corp 120-day delay program. The Marine Corps became my life and I climbed to the top of the enlisted ranks. In 1989, I was transferred to New Orleans and joined the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing as Ordnance Chief. Shortly after that, I then invited my widowed mother to come and live with me and I purchased a beautiful home on the waterfront where we lived until she died. I retired form the Corps after 30 years of active duty service in 1999. Prior to my retirement from the Corps, I joined the Saint Tammany Sheriff Dept as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff. Then God started to call me again. First to the church as head of Usher’s, Lector’s, & Ministers Holy Communion and eventually I became a Sacristan. Then God had another call for me, and I was ordained a Permanent Deacon. I thought that I would be a Deacon for the rest of my life when another call came: The Call to the Priesthood. God let me know that He had allowed me to live my life as I wanted but now it was time to pursue the vocation that He had always intended for me all along. I am scheduled for Ordination in June 2021 and if the good Lord is willing, I hope to be assigned here on the North Shore. If you are a single man and feel that God is calling you to the Holy Priesthood, I urge you to discuss it with your pastor and together you may discern if God is calling you to be one of his Ordained ministers. And if you are a woman, perhaps God is calling you to Holy Vocations as a Sister or other vowed ministry. But the only way you will know for sure is to pray and ask God’s inspiration and guidance so that you may discover What His Holy Will is For Your Life. Update: Since I left you in September, many things have happened in my life. In addition to going back to the Seminary for my last semester, I was infected with COVID-19 and (at the same time) double pneumonia. This became life threatening, and I was admitted to Ochsner Hospital and given a room in the COVID wing where I received exceptional care. I was given the same treatment/drugs as was given to President Trump when he contracted COVID-19 and within 4 days I was (almost miraculously) released from the hospital and put into isolation at NDS until I fully recovered. I have now completed all academic requirements for priestly Formation at Notre Dame Seminary, and I will be returning to Saint Angela Merici on January 18th for final Internship. I am happy to be reassigned to your parish as part of my final formation to priesthood and I look forward to once more working with Father Beau, the office staff and all my many friends at Saint Angela Merici. In addition to regular Diaconate responsibilities, I hope to start visiting the sick and homebound with the Holy Eucharist. I will be with you until May at which time I will complete this Transitional Deacon assignment, receive a permanent Priestly assignment and attend a required pre-ordination retreat. I am scheduled to be ordained as a Diocesan Priest at Saint Louis Cathedral on June 5th, 2021. I am looking forward to being with you and serving the parishioners of Saint Angela in whatever capacity I am needed. I would be very honored if you would please keep me (and all seminarians) in your daily prayers God Bless You All, Reverend Deacon Dan Dashner

  • A reading from the first Book of Samuel

Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the LORD where the ark of God was.

The LORD called to Samuel, who answered, “Here I am.” Samuel ran to Eli and said, “Here I am. You called me.”

“I did not call you, “ Eli said. “Go back to sleep.” So he went back to sleep.

Again the LORD called Samuel, who rose and went to Eli. “Here I am, “ he said. “You called me.”

But Eli answered, “I did not call you, my son. Go back to sleep.” At that time Samuel was not familiar with the LORD,

because the LORD had not revealed anything to him as yet. The LORD called Samuel again, for the third time.

Getting up and going to Eli, he said, “Here I am. You called me.” Then Eli understood that the LORD was calling the youth.

So he said to Samuel, “Go to sleep, and if you are called, reply, Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.”

When Samuel went to sleep in his place, the LORD came and revealed his presence,

calling out as before, “Samuel, Samuel!” Samuel answered, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

Samuel grew up, and the LORD was with him, not permitting any word of his to be without effect.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

    First Reading 1 Samuel 3: 3b-10, 19

    SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

    R. (8a and 9a) Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will. I have waited, waited for the LORD, and he stooped toward me and heard my cry.

And he put a new song into my mouth, a hymn to our God. R. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.

Sacrifice or offering you wished not, but ears open to obedience you gave me. Holocausts or sin-offerings you sought not; then said I, “Behold I come.” R. Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will.

“In the written scroll it is prescribed for me, to do your will, O my God, is my delight, and your law is within my heart!”

    R. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will. I announced your justice in the vast assembly; I did not restrain my lips, as you, O LORD, know.

    R. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.

    Responsorial Psalm Psalm 40: 2, 4, 7-8, 8-9, 10

  • SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

A reading from the first Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians

Brothers and sisters: The body is not for immorality, but for the Lord,

and the Lord is for the body; God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power.

Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? But whoever is joined to the Lord becomes one Spirit with him.

Avoid immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body,

but the immoral person sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body

is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?

For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

    Second Reading 1 Corinthians 6: 13c-15a, 17-20

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy Gospel according to John Glory to you, O Lord.

John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said,

“Behold, the Lamb of God.” The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.

Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, “What are you looking for?”

They said to him, “Rabbi” — which translated means Teacher —, “where are you staying?”

He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went and saw where Jesus was staying,

and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon.

Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus.

He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” — which is translated Christ —.

Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said,

“You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Cephas” — which is translated Peter.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

    Gospel Reading John 1: 35-42

    R. Alleluia, alleluia. We have found the Messiah:

Jesus Christ, who brings us truth and grace. R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Acclamation John 1: 41, 17b

    Confirmation 2021

Pro-Life Ministry On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court issued a 7-2 decision in favor of “Jane Roe” that helped women in the United States have the fundamental right to choose whether or not to have abortions without excess government restrictions, and struck down the Texas Abortion ban as unconstitutional. 47 years later we are still praying at abortion facilities in January crosses will be placed on the church lawn in memory of all babies killed by abortion since the ruling of Roe V. Wade. Please join us in a peaceful presence and pray on the second Thursday of the month at the Abortion Facility on General Pershing to end this senseless killing of babies and to have the decision made 47 years ago overturned. We also pray for their mothers that they make the decision to walk out of this facility and keep their baby or give it up for adoption.

We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. Science and research has shown that, if left unchecked, continued exposure to pornography can have lasting harmful consequences. However, today, pornography is more widely accepted, accessible, affordable, and anonymous than ever before, especially for young adults between the ages of 18-25. Join us for an online viewing and discussion on Tuesday, January 19th of “Brain, Heart, World,” a documentary that highlights how porn affects a person’s brain, their relationships, and society as a whole. Visit nolacatholic.org/brainheartworld to RSVP and receive the Zoom link leading up to January 19th.
