FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK After a little over two weeks of the Christmas Season, we have begun our observance of what the Church calls “Ordinary Time.” This term refers to the yearly cycle of thirty-three or thirty-four weeks during which time the Church celebrates no particular aspect of Christ’s life, but rather honors the mystery of Christ in its fullness, especially on Sundays. This year, we will celebrate the liturgies of Ordinary Time through Tuesday, February 28, the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. Ordinary Time will resume the day after the Easter Season concludes, which is Monday June 5, the day following Pentecost Sunday. The Scripture readings at Mass this weekend are all about our universal vocation to serve the Lord in holiness. Centuries before Christ at a time in which many of his kinsmen were being held captive in Babylon, Isaiah writes about Israel’s call, which is to serve the one true God by wholeheartedly worshipping Him alone, and by making God known to all peoples through their faithful adherence to God’s laws. In the opening lines of his first letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul echoes this theme of a call to serve the Lord. He says to the people of Corinth: “You have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be holy with all those everywhere who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours.” The gospel reading from St. John highlights the remarkable service of John the Baptist, whom God called to prepare the way for Christ by preaching repentance and baptizing sinners with water. Demonstrating his signature humility, John says of the Lord Jesus: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. He is the one of whom I said, ‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me’…He is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit…Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.” John the Baptist is a sterling example of a servant of the Lord, one who responds with a generous heart and a humble spirit to his call from God. By virtue of our baptism, we have all been called to serve the Lord, each in our own unique and personal way. Through our vocations to married life, single life, ordained ministry, or consecrated religious life, and by the particular gifts the Spirit of Christ has bestowed on us, God calls all the baptized to serve Him by living the gospel of the Lord Jesus every day. In 2017, may we grow in our capacity to serve the Lord in our daily lives! News and Notes: The common thread of respect… You might keep three special intentions in your prayers this coming week. On Monday, January 16, our nation will observe the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., so prayers for an end to racial discrimination would be fitting. From Wednesday, January 18 through Wednesday, January 25, Catholics will join other Christians around the world in the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. During this week we pray that with the wise guidance and powerful assistance of the Holy Spirit, the divisions among Christian denominations would be resolved and the visible fractures within the Body of Christ would be healed so that we would all be completely one in the Lord Jesus. Finally, next Monday, January 23, we will celebrate the annual Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of the Unborn on the 44th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision Roe vs. Wade, which legalized abortion in our country. This day beckons us to give thanks to God for the precious gift of life, and to pray for greater reverence for the sanctity of life in all its stages and stronger legal protection for unborn children. May our gracious God hear and answer these and all our prayers according to his saving will. Blessings to all of you in the week ahead!
If you are visiting our parish, we extend a warm welcome. Please feel free to introduce
yourself to the celebrant. If we can be of service to you in any way, please let us know.
We look forward to seeing you again.

be at St. Maria Goretti Church to lead a
Rosary to pray for all those who have been
impacted by abuse. Please join us in praying
to Mother Mary to watch over those who
have been abused and their families, to help
them be safe and heal, and to ask her to
help us in our efforts to keep everyone safe
and free from abuse. Individuals from the
Office of Pastoral Support will be available to
talk after the Rosary and to answer any
questions about available help, reporting
abuse, and keeping kids safe.
Used Christmas Card Collection Now that Christmas has come and gone,
instead of throwing out all those beautiful

OLA and SMG Epiphany Pageants “We saw his star at its rising and have come to
worship him” (Matthew 2:2).
This past Sunday, our youth faith formation
programs at both parishes presented beautiful
Epiphany Pageants! Between our two parishes,
more than 50 children participated. Special thanks
to Chris Breslow at OLA and Dodie Bossi at SMG for
their hard work with costumes. Afterwards,
collations overflowing with food and fellowship
were held at each parish. Thank you to all who
coordinated, participated, and attended. It was
Christian community at its finest.
An old German tradition for the feast of Epiphany
was also celebrated at each parish. Families were
provided with chalk for Fr. Tony and Fr. Paul to
bless. The children use the chalk to inscribe the
front doors of their homes with the date and initials
of the Magi “20+C+M+B+17”. Another reminder to
adults and
children alike
that “Jesus is
the reason for
the Season”.
