LIFE TOGETHER Dear Friends, It does not seem that we have had much winter. I hope by saying that I don’t bring down the gods of weather upon us with snow and sleet. However, while I know some of you don’t like winter, I do, at least as a change of season. It should be summer soon. If you have been noticing in the previous Bulletins, we are into the time of talking about financial stewardship. January is our yearly focus on this aspect of Catholic living. Financial stewardship, as given in the Sunday collection, is the way in which the parish operates. All the ministries of the parish are funded through this source. We have a good tradition of financial stewardship, and I am grateful that so many are faithful. I hope you will be able to reflect your relationship of gratitude to God through your Financial stewardship effort. Be on the lookout for a letter from me soon regarding your Financial stewardship. One area I seldom talk about is remembering St. Jean Vianney Parish in your will. I am often surprised to see that a parishioner who dies leaves a legacy to other medical, educational or spiritual institutions and the parish Church is not a part of that legacy. When the Church parish has been an important component in one’s life, and the ministries of the Church have complimented the spiritual journey in faith, considering St. Jean Vianney in your will can be a wonderful way to help the parish continue so that others may benefit as well. If you would like to talk with me about SJV and your will, please call me at the parish office. This Sunday afternoon, I will be going to Houston, Texas until Thursday afternoon for a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions. A REFLECTION ON THIS WEEK’S YOU WILL SEE In today’s Gospel, John the Baptist watches Jesus go by, and announces that Jesus is the promised Lamb of God. Andrew and another man follow Jesus, who asks what they are looking for. Their answer is strange: they want to know where he lives. Jesus replies, “Come, and you will see.” The next day Andrew takes his brother, Simon, to meet the Messiah—the Anointed One. Jesus looks hard at Simon and, from what he perceives, renames him Peter (“the rock”). The two encounters are ordinary and yet life-changing. Jesus walks past John, and then offers Andrew and his friend hospitality and companionship. Jesus meets Peter, looks at him, assesses his character, and accepts him as a friend. The simplicity of Jesus’ manner demonstrates his willingness to receive people “as they are” but also to see their potential. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY MINISTRIES Holiday Programs, Huge Success! We wish to express our appreciation to the many volunteers who assisted in our holiday programs this year, including Thanksgiving food distribution, the Giving Tree, and Christmas family adoptions. The gifts of your compassion towards others and your generosity have touched the lives of many families in our community in a way that you may never imag-ine. The families we have served truly know the peace and love of Christ’s coming at Christmas thanks to each of you. Together B.R. Launches Strategy for Better Public Education, Ten Parishioners Needed If you care about public education in our community, then you will want to be a part of Together Baton Rouge’s citywide meeting on Public Education, Thursday, January 12th, 6:30 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church, 185 Eddie Robinson Drive. This meeting will launch TBR’s 2012 strategy of community visits to 20-25 public schools in the Baton Rouge area. In our parish area, visits will be made at River Oaks Elementary (Jan. 24) and Sherwood Middle Magnet (Jan. 31) schools. We need ten parishioners with an interest in public education and who are willing to be part of a team that will gather information from the above mentioned schools during school hours (8:30 a.m.-noon). TOGETHER BATON ROUGE MOVING ON TRANSIT ISSUE

As you may have seen in news media, the city’s public transit system is in a crisis situation right now. It is quite possible that without dedicated funding sources it may have to discontinue services this summer. Together Baton Rouge(TBR) has been researching this issue and our parish TBR Target Group members have been active in learning more about this very important issue for our community. TBR is organizing three Civic Education Sessions around the city, each hosted by a cluster of congregations that are interested in improving public transportation. Our parish will be clustered with St. George and St. Paul the Apostle Catholic, Star Hill Baptist, and others. We will all gather together on Tuesday, January 24th at 6:00 p.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 3912 Gus Young Avenue. We would like to have a delegation of about 30 people from SJV to represent our parish. It is important that we participate fully, as one of the options for improving the bus system includes a route on O’Neal Lane. This would be a significant impact economically for our community.
