FJB’s Blog Dear Parishioners,

Welcome back to Ordinary Time! After the Advent and Christmas seasons the church returns to Ordinary Time. The U.S. Bishops’ website defines Ordinary Time as: “the Sundays and weeks that take us through the life of Christ. This is the time of conversion. This is living the life of Christ. Ordinary Time is a time for growth and maturation, a time in which the mystery of Christ is called to penetrate ever more deeply into history until all things are finally caught up in Christ. The goal, toward which all of history is directed, is represented by the final Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.” Ordinary Time will continue until Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14. It will resume after Pentecost. I hope this is a time of great spiritual growth for us individually and as a parish.

Today at the 11:00 am Mass, we invite the almost 70 children who were baptized in our parish in 2017 to return for a spe-cial blessing. I am sure not all 70 children and their families will be able to join us, but we remember and honor all of them! This number is phenomenal! Our baptisms are on a steady increase, which is a sign of a growing parish community. In past years, the funerals were almost double the number of baptisms. This year they were just about equal to the number of funerals. Please help all our young families and newest members feel welcome! Remind them of how much we love them and look forward to having them with us each week.

One of the realities of living in today’s world is that we all must be much more aware of security and safety, even at a par-ish. In my 8 years as pastor we have had very few security incidents, and for the most part we have been safe and secure. However, in prayer and reflection I want to be wise. After some discussion with trusted advisors I want to share some se-curity measures we currently have or will be implementing.

First, there are four panic buttons located throughout the church. If these buttons are pressed, the police are immedi-ately dispatched. Fr. Scott and I have a good view from our place in the Sanctuary and have quick access to two of the buttons. The other two are located elsewhere in the church, and key people know where they are. In addition, while the church is a “gun-free zone,” several parishioners in law enforcement have shared with me that they are required to carry a weapon at all times and are ready and willing to serve and protect us in case of emergency. I ask that we all still keep the church a gun-free zone unless you are in law enforcement and are required to carry a weapon.

Second, as of January 16, the parish office entrance will be locked at all times. When you come to the parish office during regular office hours you will be asked to ring the bell. We have installed a camera and will buzz-in people whom we know and/or those who have identified the nature of their business. This saddens me immensely, and I hope one day in the near future we can live in a peaceful society where we do not have to worry about these sorts of things, but it is what it is, and I believe it is better to be safe than sorry. Please know you are all still most welcome at the of-fice. The staff works hard to make it a welcoming environment and to assisted visitors. I know they will continue this, albeit with a different entry system.

I believe the above mentioned steps allow us to be proactive in our safety and security and hopefully will allow us to con-tinue our mission of creating and maintaining a welcoming, vibrant, and active parish community. I appreciate your under-standing.

Make it a great week!

Peace,

Fr. John

A Letter To The Students

Before the new school year began, every teacher and staff member wrote a letter to the students he/she will be working with at Ss. Robert and William Catholic School. The letter includes the hopes and dreams each has for the students during the 2017-2018 school year. Every week, we will share one of these special letters. This letter was written by Mrs. Megan Raddell. Mrs. Raddell teaches Social Studies to the Upper School students. You may notice that this letter was signed by Miss Shea, which was her name at the beginning of the school year. In September, Miss Shea got married, and now everyone is getting used to calling her by her married name, Mrs. Raddell! Dear Eighth Grade Students,

I am so happy that you are here with me this year in homeroom 8B. This year will be a year full of challenge, excitement, and transition. As you prepare your hearts and minds to take the next step into high school, my hope for you is that you always find opportunities to learn and to grow. I pray that you trust in yourselves, your teachers, and each other as you embark on this journey during your eighth grade year.

I want you to know that I care deeply about your well-being. As your teacher, I will do everything possible to make sure you feel safe, loved, challenged, and cared for during the time we spend together. Thank you for trusting me to be your teacher and for allowing me to share in your journey with you. I have a special place in my heart for each one of you and the many gifts and talents you share. I pray that you make this a year full of growth, that you seize new opportunities, and that you always make time for God. Love, Miss Shea

In a spirit of gratitude, we invite you to join us at the 19th Annual Reunion Dance on Friday, January 19, 2018 to benefit the community of Little Brothers and Sisters of the Eucharist. We look forward to sharing this meal together as we celebrate Christ’s call for us to participate in showing forth the beauty of the Mass.

Parish School of Religion Christmas Service Project As has become the tradition in our PSR Program, we incorporate a service project during the Christmas Season and again at Lent. This year our program collected new hooded sweatshirts and blankets for the St. Igna-tius High School Labre Ministry to the Homeless for Christmas. Our PSR fami-lies responded with wonderful generosi-ty and as a result many of those who are without permanent shelter this winter will have some source of warmth. Reaching out to those in need is very basic to the teachings of our Catholic Church and must be a part of our faith formation efforts. We sincerely thank all those who participated in our effort for this very important ministry.

WHEN ALL THE HUSTLE-BUSTLE OF THE HOLIDAYS ARE OVER....... Don't you and your spouse deserve a beauti-ful, romantic weekend away together? If you agree then you'll want to attend a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. For more information visit:www.GreatMarriagesOhio.org or call (330) 305-9963. Baby Corner The Bassinet will be in the Church vesti-bule next weekend (January 20 & 21) to collect donations of new or Gently used baby items for infants to 18 months. Birth Right appreciates the gifts from Ss. Rob-ert & William parishioners and extends their thanks.
