before entering the church. Thank you for your consideration.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Private Masses: Fr. Flick’s Mass intentions are all private this week.

Prayer Request: Please pray for the repose of the soul of Fr. Georges Salleron, FSSP, a French priest incorporated into the Fraternity in 1989. He passed away on January 7th: he was 76 yrs old and 46 years in the priest. May his soul, and all of the souls of the faithful departed, rest in peace!

Calendars have Shipped: The Fraternity has finally shipped the rest of the St. Joan calendar order. This means that all remaining orders will be filled on a first come basis. Each calendar is now $7.00 which will cover the cost of the calendar and shipping. Please make checks payable to St. Joan of Arc and mark it calendar and place your payment in the white mailbox next to the office door. Your calendar will be placed on the credenza for pick up within a few days, once payment has been received.

Pilgrimage to France: Fr. Garrick Huang, FSSP, will be leading a 9 day Spiritual Highlights of France Traditional Catholic Pilgrimage Tour, May 22 - 30, 2018. Highlights include a stay at the traditional Benedictine Fontgombault Abby, visits to Nevers and Ars to see St. Bernadette and St. John Vianney, a stay in the Alps at La Salette, and Parayle-Monial, where the Sacred Heart of Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary. Contact John or Natalie for more information pleas visit: www.oc-travel.com/[email protected]/1-800-675-9088.

Respect Life Group: The Respect Life Group of St. Joan of Arc will meet in front of Planned Parent-hood (123 E. Indiana Ave., Spokane), on Saturday, January 20th at 12:00 noon to recite 15 decades of the Rosary to end legalized abortion. The Rosary will also be recited at St. Joan at noon, for those who cannot drive to Spokane.

Carmelites of Post Falls: In the new year, in your charity, please remember the Carmelite sisters in Post Falls, who pray for all at St. Joan and our new church. Please be reminded that the sisters rely totally on the charity of others for all their temporal needs. Donations may be placed into the black box on the credenza, as well as your prayer requests, which they are happy to receive! May God reward you!

Mass Intentions: If you would like to have a Mass said, please write down your intention along with your name, if you wish it to be published, and place it in the white mailbox next to the office and label it “Mass intention”. If you would like a particular priest to say your Mass intention, place his name on the intention. You may also mail your intention directly to church. The usual stipend for a Mass is $10.00, but it is never required. Checks may be made payable to the priest, directly, or to St. Joan of Arc.

Blessed Items: Kindly pick up your blessed items in the well next to the credenza to avoid confusion with new items left to be blessed . Several items have been unclaimed for some time. Perhaps there is an item you forgot?

Lost and Found: The closet will be cleaned out for the new year. Please check the lost and found for any belongings, especially clothing. Any unclaimed clothing will be donated at the end of the month.

Religious Literature: Please do not put religious literature, no matter how pious, on the credenza, in the pews, or on cars, unless Fr. Gordon has first given permission to do so. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter!

APOLOGETICS CORNER Defending our Faith with the Truth

By Father Dennis M. Gordon, FSSP

Q uestion: “I see some of the actions that the

priest does during Holy Mass, and I don’t under-

stand some of them. Can you explain some of

the motions the priest does with his hands dur-

ing Mass?”

A nswer: “Yes, of course! Each action he does

h a s a s y m b o l i c m e a n i n g .

“When the priest lifts up the

chalice or the Host in his

hands, for example, he is offer-

ing it to God. This is an ancient

action that we find beginning in

the Old Testament. In Leviti-

cus 8:27, when offering sacri-

fices, the high priest Aaron did this; ‘having lifted

them up before the Lord.’ offered them to God, burning

them (a holocaust) on the altar. Other types of sacrifices

were consumed by the priests, and these, too were lifted

up before they were consumed

(like the priest does when he says

Ecce Agnus Dei… ‘Behold the

Lamb of God…’) We see an exam-

ple of this in Leviticus 8:29,

‘And he took of the ram of conse-

cration, the breast for his portion,

elevating it before the Lord,

as the Lord had commanded him.’

“When the priest hold his hands

over the offerings (the bread and

wine, before they are consecrated

into the Body and Blood of Our

Lord), he is also following an an-

cient Judeo-Christian custom.

The offering of a goat was sacri-

ficed for the sins of the people on

the annual feast known as the Day of Atonement (this is

where we get the term ‘scape goat’). The idea is that they

would sacrifice something—something valuable—that

would die in place of the people for their sins, foreshad-

owing the precious offering of Our Lord on the Cross,

Who would die in place of us for our sins. Before the

animal was offered, the priest would do the following:

‘putting both hands on his [the sacrificial victim’s]

head, let him confess all the iniquities of the children of

Israel, and all their offences and sins… praying that

they may light on his head…’ (Leviticus 16:21)

“This is similar to what was done at the consecration of

Aaron and his sons as priests. In Leviticus 8:22 we

read, ‘He offered also the sec-

ond ram, in the consecration

of priests: and Aaron, and his

sons put their hands upon

the head thereof.’ This very

same action is done at a Catho-

lic priest’s traditional rite of

ordination: the bishop, and after him every priest pre-

sent, will lay his hands on the head of the man being or-

dained a priest, just as Aaron, and after him his sons,

laid their hands upon the head of the ram that was being

offered, during the consecration

ceremony when they themselves

became priests. This is still done as

a part of the ancient traditional rite

of ordination of a Catholic priest.

“This was also done when priests

were consecrated in the New Testa-

ment, as we see from 1 Timothy

4:14, ‘Neglect not the grace that is

in thee: which was given thee…

with imposition of the hands of

the priesthood.’ This verse shows

t h r e e t h i n g s :

“(1) that a priesthood was con-

ferred by personal appointment in

t h e N e w C o v e n a n t ,

“(2) that grace was given by being

m a d e a p r i e s t , a n d

“(3) that the laying on of hands is how the priesthood

i s c o n f e r r e d i n t h e N e w C o v e n a n t .

“So there are many actions that the priest does with his
