Centennial History As part of our now ended celebration of our Diocese’s Centennial, we have been having monthly inserts in our bulletin, offering a snapshot of the history of our Diocese. On our parish web page, you can download all of these inserts as one file (pdf), should you want to keep this bit of our history. Go to: stpat.org. Come Lord Jesus! — Thursdays 6 pm This is a weekly study/support group that focuses on the upcoming Sunday readings in a small group setting. Through study, prayer and faith-sharing in a small group, members are able to deepen their faith, as well as their ap-preciation for the Sunday Eucharist, as a help to living out the Gospel day by day. We have an active group that meets on Thursdays, at 6 pm, in the classroom directly behind the Church (across from the restrooms). Anyone interested in deepening their faith and appreciation for the Eucharist is welcome to try it out. No need to register, just come and see! Codependent Recovery Meeting This meeting is part of a 12 Step Program for Building Healthy Relationships. The group meets every Thursday from noon until 1 p.m. at the Immaculata Center, 1408 Carmel Drive in Lafayette (Catherine Drexel meeting room). Baptism of the Lord Take a moment this week to gaze at the Icon of the Bap-tism of the Lord hanging in the baptistery of our Church. It is an antique Byzantine Icon of the Baptism of the Lord, from Russia. Let us pray to remain faithful to our call to discipleship and our own baptismal promises as we walk the journey of life, imitating Christ in all that we say and do along the way.

Liturgical Roles for January

From the Pastor’s Desk

This week, with our celebration of the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we bring to a close this year’s season of Christmas. On the Monday following the Feast, we move into the beginning of Ordinary Time, which will continue until the beginning of Lent, on Ash Wednesday. After celebrating the seasons of Lent and Easter, we will return to Ordinary Time, to finish out the liturgical year, until next Advent.

Because of the name of this time of our liturgical year filled with so much green, I find it helpful to recall that these Sundays are anything but “Ordinary”. They are called this because each Sunday is designated by a number—3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, 12th, 17th, 29th, etc. It is because these numbers are called ‘ordinal’ numbers that the liturgical season is called Ordinary. Yes, it is true, that these weeks do not have the specific and special quality of the other seasons of the year — Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter. Yet precisely because they are Sundays being celebrated by the Church, they are anything but ‘ordinary’. In Ordinary Time, as well as the other seasons of the year, each Sunday marks a day when the believing community, a people of faith, gather around the table of the Lord, as he commanded. Every Sunday, when we proclaim the Scriptures in the midst of God’s people, we hear nothing less than the Word of God. When we approach the altar of God to share in Com-munion, we receive nothing less than the very Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.

Another aspect of these ‘ordinary’ Sundays is that at the end of each Mass we are renewed in our mis-sion as Catholics. “Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your lives” are words that send us back out into the world, there to live on a daily basis what we have just celebrated. We all know that faith expressed only in Church is a small faith indeed. Our faith is meant to shape and form us, day in and day out, into the persons God calls us to be. When we go back out into the world as people transformed by our faith, then we truly live the Gospel that Jesus came to proclaim.

So often this “glorifying the Lord” will be in little things that we do or don’t do. We don’t make that crude gesture, we don’t turn our backs, we don’t utter that harsh word. And prior to our actions, we glorify the Lord with our thoughts, rejecting attitudes of judgment and criticism and condemnation. When our thoughts are molded by mercy and forgiveness and compassion and kindness, then these are the kinds of deeds which flow from our lives. In all of that, God is truly glorified, and Christ comes alive in our midst.

I sincerely pray your Christmas season was truly a time of grace.
