THIS IS MY BELOVED SON
This Sunday’s celebration of the Baptism of the Lord closes the Christmas season. In the scriptures we see one more epipha-ny, or manifestation, of the Spirit of God in Jesus—but this time it is as an adult, rather than as a child. Jesus’ baptism also serves as the inauguration of his prophet-ic mission and the messianic age. Today’s reading from Isaiah describes God’s chosen Messiah, upon whom God’s spirit rests. In the Acts of the Apostles Peter says that “God anointed
Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power” (Acts 10:38). Finally, in the proclamation from Matthew’s Gospel Jesus’ baptism in water goes almost un-noticed. The crucial moment comes when the Spirit of God comes upon Jesus and a voice from heaven echoes the words of Isaiah: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD
It is fitting that on this final feast of the season of Christmas, we celebrate Jesus’ bap-tism, and with it our own entry into Christ’s life through the waters of baptism. During Christmas, we have reflected on the stunning recognition that God came to be one with us in Jesus Christ. Now, as we make the transition to Ordinary Time, we think about what it means to follow this same Christ, the Anointed One of God. In baptism, we too are anointed. Baptism plunges us into Christ’s death and resurrection; in baptism, we receive the Holy Spirit. Baptism, which is available to all who believe, draws us to the very heart of God. In baptism, we become the servants of the Lord, chosen ones who are called for the victory of justice, a light for the nations.

A voice came from the heavens, say-ing, “This is my beloved Son, with
whom I am well pleased.”
— Matthew 3:17
Why Are You Coming To Me?
We can almost hear the amazement in John the Baptist’s voice as he says to Jesus, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?” Throughout the time that John preached and baptized people in the desert, he had been prepar-ing people for the coming of the Messi-ah. Now, Jesus approaches him for bap-tism! We might share in his wonder. Why would Jesus, who is sinless, come to John for a baptism of repentance? Je-sus’ response to John helps us under-stand. Jesus has come to fulfill all that is expected in the Messiah, and more. As he entered the waters of baptism, Jesus en-tered fully into our humanity, raising us toward God. Jesus sanctified the waters of baptism, making them holy, opening the heavens through his humble obedi-ence to God’s plan of love.
Christ’s Mission Is Our Mission
As Jesus came out of the baptismal wa-ters, the Holy Spirit descended upon him and a voice from the heavens was heard saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” In joining himself to humanity, Jesus opened the heavens for us, and in doing so, was con-firmed in his mission of mercy and love. In baptism, we are joined with Christ. Immersed into his life and love, his mis-sion is our mission. It is still early in this new year. Today, reflect on your baptis-mal call to live as a member of Christ’s body. In what ways do you love God and others? In what ways might you grow as a disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ? How are you living the mission of Christ, to make God’s love and mercy known in the world? Is Christ’s mission your mis-sion? Today’s Readings: Is 42:1–4, 6–7; Ps 29:1–2, 3–4, 3, 9–10; Acts 10:34–38; Mt 3:13–17 Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Family Assistance Food Collection
This Weekend, January 18/19
Family Assistance has identified the third Sunday of each month for the collection of food from parishioners attending Mass. Donated food is distributed to fam-ilies in need from the Ministry's Food Pantry on Thursday afternoons. No one is turned down. To service the need of the families who seek food from our pantry, we need at least 200 bags of food every month. This feeds approximately 800 people per month. Our need for food assistance continues to increase every year. Volunteers are welcome, please contact the Family Assistance Ministry (714) 974-9728
The pantry is need of: • canned meats • tuna • canned beans • spaghetti sauce • cereal • peanut butter The third Sunday of each month is also Green Envelope Sunday. Your donations from the green envelopes are the source of funds that enable Family Assistance to provide financial aid to working poor families and families at risk of becoming homeless. Should you have any ques-tions, please contact Scott Hervey at (714) 974-9728. Thank you for your gen-erous support!

Protect Your Valuables Nothing is more unpleasant than realiz-ing that someone has broken into your car while you were in Church. With holi-days, baptisms, and weddings, the risks increase. It is important to remember that thieves can break into a car even for an empty box, if it has attracted their atten-tion. So, please DO NOT leave any val-uables visible in your car. Before you leave your car, take with you all that could attract a thief’s attention, such as DVD players, iPhones, MP3 players, GPS, bags, boxes, baptism or wedding gifts, wallets, purses, cameras, folders with documents, or even mail that may have your home address visible and giving him plenty of time to violate your home.

Kinder Kiddos Spread Christmas Cheer
Dressed in their festive Christmas best and adorned with their very own "red noses,” kindergarteners in Ms. Armi's class sere-naded parishioners at the 10:00am Mass with a few treasured Christmas songs. These precious little children lovingly sang Silent Night, Jingle Bell Rock, and Ru-dolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer to the de-light of everyone in attendance. Following their performance, the students and their parents enjoyed a small reception with yummy treats, then headed over to Brookdale Senior Living Center to contin-ue sharing their Christmas spirit by singing Christmas songs and sharing cookies with some overjoyed seniors. Thank you to Ms. Armi, her students and their families, for spreading some Christmas cheer this sea-son!
Creating a Special Christmas for Others! Eucharist 1 students in Ms. Sharon and Ms. Cathy’s Class beamed with pride and delight as they gathered toys to donate to children within San Antonio’s Family Assistance Pro-gram. These gifts are often those that make a child’s Christmas special and memorable, as children tend to pick out the BEST gifts for other children; they know what to give! And they give with kind and loving hearts, hoping to bring a smile to another child’s face. These toys were distributed to families at our Church, to families with a parent serving in the Military, and to Grandma’s House of Hope families. Thank you, Ms. Sharon, Ms. Cathy, parents and students, for inspiring within these special students, a desire to give back in the most beautiful way!
Classes are Back in Session We hope you have truly enjoyed this Christmas season surrounded by family and friends! We have so many wonderful events and activities planned for our students as we jump back in to our school year. With that in mind, our Nursery, Sunday School and Children’s Liturgy classes resume today, Sunday, January 12, 2020. Weekday classes will resume Monday, January 13, 2020. We look forward to seeing all of our amazing students back on campus soon!
Ho Ho Ho… What An Amazing Show
The magic and joys of Christmas permeated throughout our Religious Education Family this past month. Family and friends were treated to several fun and touching Christmas performances. Our students carried the shows as they performed for our special guests. Many of our students sang various Christmas songs from the Altar, a few read from the Ambo and several served as part of our Nativity Story. Each student played a treas-ured role sure to be remembered by friends and family for years to come. After each Show, all in attendance gathered in the Hall for a festive Christmas Party. Rounding out the perfect event was a visit from Santa and some fun family photo opportunities. What a special way to ring in the Christmas Season! Thank you, students, parents, volunteers, and catechists for making this season so Merry and Bright!
Happy New Year To All Our Parish Families We are looking forward to welcoming everyone back for a great 2020. We hope the holi-days were filled with faith, love and joy amongst family and friends. We’re looking for-ward to embarking on a fun and inspirational Religious Education year. Sunday classes and the Nursery resume this weekend: Sunday, January 12. Weekday classes resume on Monday, January 13. We’ve missed our Religious Ed children and families! We’re very much looking forward to seeing everyone back on campus this week.

Grief Support Grief is a process that each person expe-riences uniquely in his or her own way. There is no doubt that grief comes with pain, a pain that varies in different de-grees for each person. Emotions vary as well. The most common reactions to the death of a loved one are: shock, denial, anger, guilt, sadness, and finally ac-ceptance. These may be felt in sequence or all at once. Grief Support Group meets on the 1st & 3rd Saturday of each month from 9:30 am - 11:00 am in Conference Room #1. Please contact Elizabeth Bicknell at (714) 974-1416 ext 111. Come share and begin the healing process.
