MINISTRY TO THE SICK AND HOMEBOUND

If you have someone in your life who is unable to come to Church and he/she needs communion to be

brought home to them, please contact the office at 760-757-3250 or [email protected] to schedule a visit from one of our ministers of the Sick and Homebound Ministry.

CALLED TO SERVE

The status of God’s beloved Son is not one he clings to. It is one he shares. All of us are called to be sons and daughters of God. In Jesus, we can all claim God’s favor. The second reading makes this clear. Here we read of the bap sm of Cornelius and his household. Peter’s speech recalls the anoin ng of Jesus by the Holy Spirit and the great power that swept through Israel and onto the doorstep of the Gen le Cornelius. As for his household, so for us. There is an end to our work on earth, to our bap smal voca on and the honorable work we do. But there is no end to the saving life given to us through bap sm. There is no end to the life of the children of God; there is no end to God’s compassion, which we know in Christ Jesus. There is no end to our status as chosen and beloved people of God. Because of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrec on, we are forever among those on whom God’s favor rests.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Through the centuries, ar sts and cra speople have depicted the bap sm of Jesus in the Jordan River by John. At first in mosaics and frescoes, and later in tapestries, stained glass, and pain ngs, the scene is familiar. Jesus is standing waist-high in flowing water. Above him, standing on dry land, John the Bap st pours water over Jesus. The first ar sts to depict this were sketching from memory. This is exactly how most people were bap zed in the early days: as adults, standing or kneeling in the water, with water poured over their heads. This method of bap zing, called immersion, is the favored way today. An adult enters a font, or an infant is lowered a bit into the water supported by a parent’s hand, and water is poured or splashed over them. The treasures of bap stry art a est that submersion, or plunging beneath the water’s surface, is not really in our tradi on, and that “infusion,” the mere pouring of a few drops of water, yields too narrow an under-standing of what it means to be plunged into Christ’s life. Jesus Christ has gone before us into the water, and waits for us there with abundant gi s. No wonder the tradi on calls for abundant symbols!

HOLY HOUR For Priestly and Religious Voca ons

You are invited! (all ages are welcome)

Prayer and Fellowship - 3rd Wed. of every month (1/15/14) from 7:30-9:00 p.m. at the Diocesan Pastoral Center, 3888 Paducah Drive, San Diego CA 92115. Pray with and get to know those who dedicate themselves to Christ through a life of prayer and service. For more in-forma on, call the Office for Voca ons, Diocese of San Diego at 858-490-8346.

A ques on o en asked secretly by many young men is, “How do I know that God is calling me to priesthood?”

Too o en, because of a lack of drama c evidence, many of the subtle hints and gentle nudges which accompany the call to priesthood can easily be overlooked or misin-

terpreted. Reading I Kings (19:11-13) we see that the great prophet Elijah heard God’s call, not in an earth-

sha ering event, a mighty storm or blazing fire, but in a ny whispering sound. So, IF THE NOTION OF

PRIESTHOOD GENTLY PASSES YOUR MIND FROM TIME TO TIME, SIT UP AND TAKE NOTICE. IT COULD BE A HINT.
