Paul and Christianity's First Expansion Scholars tell us the earliest New Testament writings were by the Apostle Paul. He traveled, preached, wrote, taught, and established Christian churches all the way to Rome. In our quest to better understand that his- tory, our Bible Study class next Sunday returns to Dr. Timothy Luke Johnson's informative DVD les- sons: "The History of Christianity: From the Disciples to the Dawn of the Reformation." We wonder if the followers of Jesus then, or even the church today, could have survived without Paul and his writings. We invite you to join us for this stimulating study each Sunday morning at 9:15. Question: What is better than a bowl of chili on a cold, winter night? Answer: A lot of bowls of chili and all the fixins. That's what we'll have Sunday night, Jan. 20, at 5:30. It's the much anticipated "Chili Cook- Off" to support Habitat for Humanity. An impres- sive array of Bethany's best cooks are prepar- ing their recipes. Sample all the chili you want and then vote for your favorite. Allison Fate is making a special award for the winner who will be crowned "Chili Champ of Bethany Christian Church" (a prize highly to be desired). Beginning this Sunday you will see a display of bricks in the Fellowship Hall. They will take shape into a house illustrating our gifts for Habi- tat. Each brick will represent $50. Phil Gray is making a roof for our house which will help us "Raise the Roof" for Habitat. You may buy a brick at any time through January, but we en- courage you to buy one or contribute toward one at our chili supper. The House will break ground the first Saturday of March, and will be underway for the next fourteen Saturdays. January 11, 2013 Office Hrs. 9a.m.2p.m. 918.492.1353

Paul and Christianity's

First Expansion

Scholars tell us the earliest New Testament

writings were by the Apostle Paul. He traveled,

preached, wrote, taught, and established

Christian churches all the way to Rome.

In our quest to better understand that his-

tory, our Bible Study class next Sunday returns to

Dr. Timothy Luke Johnson's informative DVD les-

sons: "The History of Christianity: From the

Disciples to the Dawn of the Reformation."

We wonder if the followers of Jesus then, or

even the church today, could have survived

without Paul and his writings. We invite you to

join us for this stimulating study each Sunday

morning at 9:15.

Question: What is better

than a bowl of chili on a

cold, winter night?

Answer: A lot of bowls

of chili and all the fixins.

That's what we'll have Sunday night, Jan. 20,

at 5:30. It's the much anticipated "Chili Cook-

Off" to support Habitat for Humanity. An impres-

sive array of Bethany's best cooks are prepar-

ing their recipes. Sample all the chili you want

and then vote for your favorite. Allison Fate is

making a special award for the winner who will

be crowned "Chili Champ of Bethany Christian

Church" (a prize highly to be desired).

Beginning this Sunday you will see a display

of bricks in the Fellowship Hall. They will take

shape into a house illustrating our gifts for Habi-

tat. Each brick will represent $50. Phil Gray is

making a roof for our house which will help us

"Raise the Roof" for Habitat. You may buy a

brick at any time through January, but we en-

courage you to buy one or contribute toward

one at our chili supper. The House will break

ground the first Saturday of March, and will be

underway for the next fourteen Saturdays.

DISCIPLE WOMEN

Happy New Year! This is your friendly reminder of our Disciples Women meeting at

10:00 Saturday, January 12, at Bethany Christian Church.

Christy Moore, will lead our study on the topic of "The Help", which is based on I Peter 2:11-

25. Our understanding of this topic in the days of the early Church will be enhanced if we read the

scripture before hearing Christy's lesson.

Our service project, for January is helping to provide funds for the start up of StoneSoup, the

ministry to help relieve food insecurity that Christy has initiated. Last month we decided to contribute

$100 from Disciples Women's funds toward StoneSoup, and to plan a fundraising breakfast at Apple-

bee's on behalf of the organization. At our meeting next week, Allison Fatre will report on what is

needed to plan the Applebee's event, which will probably be held in March. Our offerings for January

will also be contributed to StoneSoup.

Hostesses for January are Bettye Jackson and Maria Taveau.

I look forward to seeing you next Saturday, Myrna

fore The Board of Directors affirms that Kelly is most deserv-

ing of the NEATEST AWARD for volunteer service and hereby

What does civil conversation look like? I like theologian Bernard Lonergan's words. He

names "transcendental imperatives": rules without which genuine conversation and under-

standing are not possible. "Be attentive, be intelligent, be responsible, be loving, and, if nec-

essary, change." (Method in Theology, 1972, p. 231) In my opinion, civil conversations re-

quire rules such as these.

We've accepted 9 proposals for presentations of 25 minutes each, to address the confer-

ence question, What should people of religious faith do to contribute to civil discourse in the

United States? Visit the Re-Mind & Re-New Speaker page for the selected speakers and

their topics. In between the presentations, participants will engage in conversation. The

conversation moderator will be the Rev. Dr. Gary Blaine. Blaine is a pastor, educator, writer,

and is currently the leader of a new worship community in Wichita and serves as a hospital

chaplain. He has taught several courses for PTS in the past as well.
