There are many reasons to be excited about the arrival of another WHL season. As the premier juniorhockey league in the world, we all take great interest in watching the remarkable progress our topprospects make during the course of the WHL season. From the established WHL veterans alreadydrafted by NHL Clubs, to the top rated prospects for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft, to the new crop ofhighly touted rookies entering the WHL, these young stars will excite fans in all of our WHL markets.The WHL provides an ideal environment for players to develop as they continue to pursue their dreamof playing in the NHL or representing their country in a major international competition. Many of thesetop draft eligible prospects for the 2014 NHL Draft will have the opportunity to showcase their skills asthe WHL hosts the CHL / NHL Top Prospects game, January 15, in Calgary.The WHL also takes great pride in offering our players the best academic and hockey opportunitiespossible, as we award over 325 WHL Scholarships to graduate players each season, while more than 20percent of all NHL players got their start in the WHL.As you cheer on your favorite WHL team in their quest to capture the Ed Chynoweth Cup and a berth inthe MasterCard Memorial Cup, I am sure you will enjoy watching the world’s finest young prospects inaction throughout the WHL.

A Welcome from the President

Welcome back to another exciting year of Kootenay ICE Hockey. With the way the Hockey Club finished last year the 2013-2014 season has the potential to be very special. Mirrored in last place at Christmas, the Club posted the fifth best record in the WHL in the second half of the season and made the playoffs for a 15th straight year, while finishing with a .500 or better record for a 14th consecutive season (which are both the longest active streaks in the WHL).

Our organization has been very fortunate since moving to Cranbrook to enjoy an unparalleled amount of on ice success. This year for the first time in franchise history one of our players has the potential to be the first overall selection in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. With that comes added pressure to perform, but with reigning WHL Coach of the Year, Ryan McGill leading our team, Sam Reinhart and the rest of the players will receive the necessary guidance and leadership in achieving all of their goals.

With the invaluable experience our team gained last season, we expect our returning players along with our new prospects to once again battle for contention in the very competitive Eastern Conference. Our expectations of success both on and off the ice will not change. Our fans have come to expect a team that is hard working on the ice and ambassadors for Cranbrook and the entire East Kootenay region off the ice.

TONIGHT’S OPPONENTSEASON-AT-A-GLANCE: The Edmonton Oil Kings (27-12-0-1) kick off five in a row on the road tonight against the Kootenay Ice riding a four-game winning streak into Cranbrook. The Oil Kings currently sit second in the Central Division and third in the Eastern Conference, trailing Calgary by eight points for first with two games in hand.

LAST GAME: Tristan Jarry made a career-high 43 saves, including three on first-period breakaways, and Brandon Baddock had a career-best two goals and one assist as Edmonton knocked off the top-ranked Kelowna Rockets Wednesday night at Rexall Place. Luke Bertolucci and Edgars Kulda also scored for Edmonton as they evened the season series with Kelowna at 1-1-0-0.

SPECIAL TEAMS: The Oil Kings have scored in four straight with the man advantage and are now at 18.5% on the season, 20th in the WHL. Edmonton’s penalty kill, meanwhile, is humming along at 85.8%, second in the league, and hasn’t allowed a goal against in three outings.

THIS SEASON VS. KOOTENAY: Edmonton has a 2-1-0-0 record against the Ice on the season, splitting a back-to-back in Edmonton in October before notching a 5-1 win in Cranbrook to end November. Tristan Jarry is 2-0-0-0 with a goals-against average a shade under 1.50 in two outings for the Oil Kings, while Curtis Lazar leads all Edmonton scorers with three goals and two assists in the season series.

FULL STRENGTH: After missing nine and 11 games, respectively, Curtis Lazar and Griffin Reinhart will return to the Oil Kings lineup tonight after serving on the Canadian team at the World Junior Championship. Lazar had 12 points over his last seven games before leaving for the tournament, where he had seven points in seven games for Canada and was named one of the coun-try’s three best players at the tournament. Reinhart, the Oil Kings captain, was named the Player of the Game for Canada in the quarter-finals and recorded two points in four games in Sweden.

SILVER LINING: Oil Kings Associate Coach Steve Hamilton helmed Team Pacific to a silver medal at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Cape Breton Island, N.S., falling to the United States 4-0 in the gold medal match Saturday. It was the best finish for Team Pacific since a silver in 2009.
