“I’m 82 years old! Why am I only learning now about everything that happened at my baptism?” said the slightly perturbed

woman who had attended a presentation I made in her parish a few years ago about what happens at baptism. While she was understandably disquieted to learn that she had lived mostly in the dark about her baptism for nearly 82 years, I have discovered repeatedly that many Catholics baptized in infancy are in the same boat, largely unaware of what really happened at their baptism. Today we celebrate the Feast of the Bap-tism of the Lord by John the Baptist at the Jordan River. It seems a good moment to explore the meaning of our baptism. Most of us know some baptism basics such as 1) it washes away original sin, 2) I become a child of God, and/or 3) I become a member of the Catholic Church (or a member of another Christian denomination into which I am baptized). These are all important aspects of baptism. But there are other equally important dimensions of baptism many Catholics never learn about. One of the most significant is that you are given three gifts (some call them ‘offices’) in baptism. The gifts are 1) priesthood, 2) prophecy, and 3) leadership. What are these gifts/offices and what do they mean for you as a baptized Christian? Let’s look at them briefly in turn.Priesthood: We often think of people like Frs. Jairo, Jim, and me as the “priests.” In fact, everyone baptized is a priest. Frs. Jairo, Jim, and I are ministerial priests but everyone who is baptized is a baptismal priest. Like ministerial priests, baptismal priests do two critical things: 1) worship/glorify God and 2) pray for the sanctifica-tion of the people. Every time you worship or glorify God, be it at Mass, in your home at prayer, on a nature walk, looking up at the night sky, etc., you are exercising your baptismal priesthood. Worshiping God is the principal purpose of Sunday Mass. This is what all Christian priests do, both baptismal and ministerial. You also inter-cede to God for the sanctification (making

holy/whole) of others. Lifting others up in prayer in their need is an exercise of your priesthood. This is what all priests do, bap-tismal and ministerial.Prophecy: To be clear, you are not en-dowed at baptism with the ability to predict the future, the popular understanding of prophecy. Doing that makes you an oracle according to the Bible. According to the Bible, a prophet is someone highly in tune with the will of God for the world and for individuals who is sent as God’s messen-ger to proclaim that will and its conse-quences if not followed. The prophet alerts or forewarns so listeners can choose the correct path, according to the Lord, for their life. Parents who teach their children to be honest and to tell the truth is a good example and includes the remediation of their children when they are dishonest or untruthful because the consequences of these behaviors are always negative and destructive and not according to the will of God for them or the world.Leadership: The traditional Biblical language used in baptism is associated with royalty, e.g., king. You are called to govern, to lead, but not in the way peo-ple generally lead in government today. Because you become a brother or sister of Jesus in baptism, you are called to exer-cise your leadership following his example: washing feet, serving others selflessly. Some refer to it as servant-leadership. The baptized lead by serving others and reflecting the model of Jesus’ leadership by example. Spouses do this when they make sacrifices for each other out of love. Parents do this for their children. Children do this for their friends and siblings. The best example of this leadership is when we do this for the least, the marginal, and especially the enemy. The baptized are to exercise these gifts/offices on a regular basis throughout life. But first the baptized need to know they have been given these gifts/offices. Part of a parish-wide project this year will explore the deeper meaning of our baptism so we may become aware of what has been given to us and how we are to use it. Stay tuned for more . . .

Due to COVID and the restrictions put in place to keep everyone safe, one of the groups I work with has been unable to meet in any capacity. Not being able to meet did not stop their continued desire to help others in need. Mem-bers of the 50+ Group at St. Francis of Assisi rallied together and were able to collect and then donate 67 pairs of children’s pajamas to needy children at the Women’s Center at the Salvation Army. Several members also made generous donations by cash or mailed checks to the cause, since they were unable to get out and purchase pajamas. Also included with the delivery were over 150 children’s books collected last February by the group at one of their monthly potlucks, which were, then stored at Kathy Tetrault’s home until the center was able to accept them. Sharon Desjardins started the Pajama Drive many years ago in honor of members of the 50+ group who were deceased. Sharon’s husband, John, has continued the collection with other members since Sharon has passed away. The Salvation Army was thrilled to get the contributions to help children in our area stay warm at night, and to choose a book for a bedtime story! It is stories like these where we see people reaching out to help one another that continue to give us all hope during these difficult times during the pandemic

Justice and Peace Ministries

Friday’s with Pope Francis: Brothers, Sisters, All Join us for three Fridays at noon to deepen our understand-ing of Pope Francis’ vision of the world and the church.

January 22, 29, and February 5, 12:00noon to 1:00pm, via Zoom, facilitated by Trevor Thompson, Director of Office of Justice and Peace

In October, Pope Francis published his third encyclical Fratelli Tutti subtitled "on fraternity and social friendship." We are also celebrating the 5th anniversary year of his last encyclical Laudato si’, Care of our Common Home. These major teaching documents offer much for us to reflect upon as we dream about what fraternal life might look like in a post-pandemic 2021.

Each week, we will provide a short reflection on some major themes of Pope Francis’ vision and facilitate a discussion of how this vision might come to life in our churches and homes.

seroles should be dropped off at the Community Center – specifically the middle door which opens into Cuper-tino Room. The middle door will be unlocked between 9:00am and 4:00pm Monday-Friday.

• The doors to the rest of the Community Center will remain locked.

• There will be one refrigerator for Feed the Need and one refrigerator for Car-ing Casseroles. They will be labelled accordingly.

• Please do not put anything in the freezer. We will be using both freezers for short term storage of meals for families.

• Please remember to put a label on each meal including the ingredients. We have some families with food aller-gies and you can help us keep them safe by just including the ingredients for each meal for both Feed the Need and Caring Casseroles.

Today is the last day of the Christmas Season. At The Franciscan School, we recognize the “full celebration of Christmas” in the Catholic tradition and celebrate Christmas from Christmas Day through the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which falls on the first Sunday after Epiphany…today! As a Catholic school, we certainly embrace the traditions and culture of the Catholic community of faith, and we make it an integral part of the daily expe-rience for our students and faculty. Why is that important for us? Our Catholic tra-dition is a beautiful and historic expres-sion of the Christian faith that has grown over time to become the wonderful daily experience we all have become familiar with at TFS. However, we do not just “go through the motions” of recognizing feast days and the traditions, we understand how these special moments enhance our faith and we learn why these traditions are important to our living our faith in authentic ways.

This is all part of the preparation we make for our students to experience the grace of the sacraments as an encounter with Jesus Christ. Naturally, the prepa-ration of our students to receive the power of our sacramental life begins in 2nd grade with Reconciliation and First Eucharist and continues in our middle school as we prepare our students for Confirmation. However, the weekly expe-rience of the Mass and the Eucharist is a wonderful expression of our faith and the liturgy is the celebration that enables us to engage that faith. Our teachers prove themselves, time and again, as excellent channels for making faith a part of the everyday experience at the school. Cath-olic schools are not just schools that oc-casionally have Mass, but also, and more importantly, a daily faith involvement that transcends the “typical” school day. This helps form all those on our campus, faculty and staff and students, in what it means to be a person who believes, a person of faith, and why it is essential to be one in our world, especially today.

We form students who are faithful, caring, and nurturing people capable of recognizing God’s love for each of us individually, that we might become nec-essary instruments of his presence and his love here in all times and places! The Franciscan School wants to collab-orate with you to achieve the academic and spiritual support you want for your child and their educational experience. Join us for one of our upcoming virtual in-formation sessions to learn more on how we can support your family’s goals for your child through the love and support provided by our TFS family.
