REFLECTIONS ON THE READINGS
FOR THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD
The Baptism of the Lord presents the Christian with a
most unique picture of the Messiah. Through the
Baptism of the Lord, a myriad of unique events in God’s
Redemptive Plan will come to light. Due to this
complexity, there are several options for readings in the
Sacred Mysteries. For Year B, the first option is used to
demonstrate Christ’s positive role as the Messiah for
God’s Chosen People. Jesus will not be what many
human beings expect him to be – a political power.
Instead, Christ will be God’s blessing bestowed upon
those who accept him. He will be the Incarnate Word,
Himself who invites God’s Chosen People to journey with
the Him and partake of the Heavenly Banquet. This
Messiah will transform the spiritual being of the
individual and create for him or her the “divinization” of
our being through union with Christ. This invitation will
be extended to all who are wise enough to accept it.
In today’s first reading of choice comes from the Book of
the Prophet Isaiah. In this selection, the Lord invites all
who are thirsty to come to the water. The invitation is
extended to all, rich and poor, to partake of food and
drink without cost. This “food” will fully satisfy each
individual. In addition, God promises to create another
everlasting Covenant, giving new status many formerly
excluded nations. As a Covenant, the Divine ….

...Promise creates a new and
inclusive family relationship with
those who accept His offer. This, in
turn, will glorify God and the
nation.
It is this glorification of God found
in the divinity of Jesus that is the
topic of the second reading from
the first Letter of St. John. John
affirms the Divinity of Jesus in
today’s reading when he affirms
that Jesus was begotten by God. He
continues to state that those who
believe that Christ is begotten by
God and love God will obey His
commandments. St. John also
states that loving God is loving
Christ along with the children that
God has also claims for His family.
This, in turn, is easily done through
faith that comes through the Spirit.
It is this Spirit that is prominent in
today’s Gospel by Mark. This evan-
gelist’s account of the Lord’s bap-
tism that we hear today is succinct. John the Baptist
proclaims Jesus as the one whose sandals he is not
worthy to untie. While John baptizes with water, it is
Jesus who will baptize with the Spirit and give life to
those who accept Him. It is this brief account that
attests to the Trinitarian nature of God whose
invitation proclaimed by Christ will
burn like fire within those who
accept Jesus as their Messiah. It is
not surprising that the Church ends
today’s Gospel with God the
Father’s own words attesting to the
Divinity of Jesus when He says,
“…You are my beloved Son, with
you I am well pleased.”
Holy Mother the Church takes today
to invite us to walk with Christ
through His ministry of Passion and
Revelation. The baptism that Jesus
received was done so that
justification and righteousness
might be given to those who follow
in the Lord’s footsteps. Today,
affirmation of Christ’s divinity is
given in triplicate – by John, the
Father, and the Spirit. Witnessed by
both human and Divine entities, it
is presented to those who hear to
accept or reject. This theophanic
revelation is an account that calls
all to remember their own partici-
pation through their baptism into the Divine nature
of Jesus. Just as he died and rose from the dead to
receive His inheritance from the Father, so, too will
we be afforded the same if we remain faithful to
our calling.

Reflections on the Readings for this Sunday ( c o n t i n u e d )
SAINT OF THE WEEK: HILARY OF POITIERS (January 13)
Hilary was born at Poitiers near the beginning of the 4th century A.D. He was raised a pa-gan but his education included study the Old and New Testament writings. These studies eventually led him to be baptized and received into the Church.
The Christians of Poitiers so respected Hilary that about 350 or 353, they unanimously elected him their bishop. At that time Arianism threatened to overrun the Western Church; Hilary undertook to repel the disruption. About the same time, Hilary wrote to Emperor Constantius II a remonstrance against the persecutions by which the Arians had sought to crush their opponents. The imperial response was to banish the new bishop to Phrygia..
While Hilary spent nearly four years in exile, he continued to govern his diocese, as well as writing two of the most important epistles. In these, he sought to show that sometimes the difference between certain doctrines and orthodox beliefs was rather in the words than in the ideas. Hilary was a firm guardian of the Trinity as taught by the Western church, and
therefore saw the foreseen Antichrist in those who repudiated the divinity of the Son and thought Him to be but a created Being. Hilary's urgent and repeated requests for public debates with his opponents proved at last so inconvenient that he was sent back to his diocese.
Hilary's major theological work was the twelve books now known as De Trinitate. This was composed largely during his exile, though perhaps not completed until his return to Gaul in 360. After his return to Poitiers, Hilary encouraged Martin, the future bishop of Tours, to found a monastery at Ligugé in his diocese.
Hilary is the pre-eminent Latin writer of the 4th century (before Ambrose). Augustine of Hippo called him "the illustrious
doctor of the churches", and his works continued to be highly influential in later centuries. Hilary died in Poitiers in 367.
Pope Pius IX formally recognized him as Universae Ecclesiae Doctor in 1851.
