  • DEAR PARISHIONERS, This weekend we hear the account of Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan river. This particular gospel ac-count comes from St. Mark who features words from John the Baptist, “One mightier than I is com-ing after me...he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit” and words from our heavenly Father “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” I find it quite interesting, at that particular moment, the voices that surrounded Jesus knew ex-actly who he was and what he was to do. These voices encouraged him to come to this point in his life when, perhaps, Jesus himself, before this moment, may have been uncertain, unsure or, at the very least, hesitant about his self-identity. Right here in this passage we are privileged to see a moment in time when Jesus, in the full-ness of his humanity encounters his destiny in the fullness of his divinity. Right here we see His humanity and divinity kiss. This is truly a holy moment when God calls Jesus further into the depths of the fullness of Himself in order to sanctify this world. The baptism of the Lord marks the very beginning of Jesus’ mission and ministry into the world. But before this we know little, if anything, about Jesus’ life after his birth up to this point. Mark’s gospel begins right here with the baptism. Whereas the gospels of Matthew and Luke begin with the infancy narratives regarding Jesus’ birth. The gospel of Luke even goes so far as to include the account of Jesus teaching in the temple when he was a boy of twelve years old and this particular account concludes by saying, “And Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and favor before God and man.” (Lk 2:52) From 13 to 30 years old, where was Jesus and what was he doing? Physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually we can assume Jesus grew up through his adolescence into his adulthood in the house of Mary and Joseph under the care of loving parents while learning a particular set of skills and receiving basic faith formation by their word and example. We can also assume, as we would with any other adolescent, he was surrounded by his friends and experienced social situa-tions and peer pressures youth or young adults encountered in that day and age. Nevertheless, he still remained faithful and pure in the eyes of God being very studious in learning the scriptures and gifted in leading others to the truth. From 13 to 30, in the fullness of his humanity, we know Jesus grew in wisdom and age and fa-vor before God and man. During those years of human, intellectual and spiritual formation we have confidence his parents and relatives, specifically Mary, Joseph, John the Baptist and perhaps others in Nazareth knew of the great things expected of him and encouraged him to that end. From 13 to 30, those wondrous years of self discovery are either regrettable or memorable, are experiences we all have. During those years where are we at in terms of our own physical, emo-tion, mental and spiritual identity and development? Somewhere from 13 to 30, we experience the fullness of our humanity with all its strengths and weaknesses. It is then we need to really encounter or be confronted by our divine destiny. We know, through the experience of Jesus, at this time in life, parents, relatives, friends and faith com-munities have a profound influence in our lives by their words and examples. They can either invite and encourage us to a deeper understanding of our self-identity and call to holiness or they can discourage us from reaching our God given potential. As a matter of fact, in our own Baptismal ritual it is declared the responsibility of bringing up a child in the faith is primarily the responsibility of the parents and godparents as it is specifically stated but also, secondarily, it is the responsibility of the faith community that supports that family. From the moment of birth to baptism, most especially through those mysterious years between 13 and 30, Jesus had the constant support and encouragement of his loved ones to follow his di-vine destiny and fulfill God’s plan of salvation. In the same way, we need the same constant sup-port and encouragement as we are called to holiness. The fullness of our humanity must meet up with our divine destiny so we may assist Jesus in sanctifying the world. People from all ages need to hear this message, specifically those from 13 to 30. But those from 13 to 30 are, unfortunately, not at Mass as at least a good number of them are resistant to or not faithful in Church attendance. The reasons are many and varied but perhaps one is they are caught up in their humanity while forgetting about their divine destiny. In our culture, which breeds individualism and selfishness, the whole notion of service and sacrifice for the sake of others and God is out of sight and out of mind. This, my friends, is where I plead with you. As your pastor, I can preach the gospel message of holiness in a homily during any given Sunday and encourage our youth to do something extraordi-nary with their lives. But, you as parents, grandparents, family, friends and parish community members need to convey that message everyday in the context of your own homes, schools and work places. Remind those from 13 to 30 of their baptismal commitments to Jesus and His church by showing them yours.

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD This weekend we transition from the Christmas Season to Ordinary Time. The Baptism of Jesus is the perfect Gospel to help us get there. Even during this time of pandemic, we continue to celebrate both baptisms and funerals. And, even though our font may be empty, its beauty and symbolism is profound. The body of the deceased enters the church through the same baptismal font where we continue to baptize. We place a pall on the casket, clothing the body in Christ (as with newborns) and sprinkle with water (same). Baptism is both the watery womb through which the church is born and the deathly tomb in which we are buried with Christ and born to eternal life. All we are as Church begins with Jesus wading out to John in the muddy Jordan. May we wade out through these muddy times to share God’s love through masks and distance.

  • January 10, 2021 ■ The Baptism of the Lord 5

From 13 to 30 they may not be as present in the church on Sunday as we would like them to be. Regardless of this, you may see them every day. Pay attention to them. See and accept their humanity in its fullness but also instill within them a sense of the divine. Let them know they are important to the life of the Church now and in the future. Challenge them to be accountable to their baptismal call of holiness and service. Assure them they are beloved Sons and Daughters of God and they have a place among us. But, also let them know God has a plan for them and calls them to faithfulness and fidelity in the life of the church. Invite them to consider a vocation as a chaste and single person; or as one who is more directed to faithful and committed marriage or one who is called to a celibate religious vocation as a priest or religious brother or sister. From 13 to 30, the time of Jesus’ life of which we have little to no knowledge, may be those same mysterious years in a young person’s life today. It is during these years that Jesus needs to be the most present to them. He, with the help of loved ones, leads those young people to dis-cover their self-identity and find their way in life. By His grace and by our good efforts may those mysterious years of youth be translated into meaningful moments engaging them in the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ. Fr. Phil

    The Capital Campaign for a

    New School is Resuming!

In April, we paused our Building A Visible Presence Capital Campaign

for a new school building due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Campaign Committee has continued to meet and discuss when Resurrection should relaunch. After discussions with the Archdiocese of Dubuque, Holy Family School System and Resurrection Parish leadership, we have decided to resume our campaign! A new school building is too urgent to delay. Numerous parishioners have made commitments, demonstrating a strong enthusiasm for this effort. We are over $1 million in pledges and financial gifts! If you are ready to make a commitment, please do so. Initial funding is essential to paying upfront construction building design and campaign costs. You can make a gift by requesting a commitment card from the parish office. Please contact Deb Kalb at [email protected] or 563-556-7511. We will then mail you a commitment card to fill out.
