NEW LIFE

In order to prevent us from cheating on the final exam in world history in high school, the teacher gave us special paper with his signature on it and the theme that was assigned to us. I had already written a good portion, when I realized I was writing about the wrong topic. I raised my hand and told the teacher what had happened and asked if he could give me another sheet to start over, to which he agreed and handed me a new paper. Everyithing went well and I my grade was satisfactory. Then I started thinking ... How great it would be if I could tell God ¨ I was wrong in my life. Can you give me another! God does not give us another life, but He does give us every opportunity to correct the life He gave us and start over.

This New Year will not be better or worse than the last. Everything depends on the

attitude we take and the decisions that we make. Every day is like a blank page that God gives us. From morning till night is up to us

what we make of it. We can scribble aimlessly wasting it, or very carefully we can write a

love poem, a beautiful song or do some creative work of art. It depends solely on us

who handle the pen and decide what to do with it. It is up to us to present to God on our final

day a trash can full of wasted paper or a lovely album containing beautiful artwork. If we

wake up tomorrow, it's because God has given us blank paper to make it a work of art.

AÑO NUEVO, VIDA NUEVA

Pbro. Jorge A. Román A manera de evitar que copiáramos o hiciéramos trampa en el examen final de Historia Universal en la Preparatoria, el profesor nos daba unas hojas especiales con su firma y allí deberíamos desarrollar el tema

que nos tocaba. Ya había escrito un buen tramo, cunado me di cuenta que estaba contestando otro tema que no me correspondía. Levanté la mano y le dije al profesor lo que había pasado y le pregunté si me podía dar otra hoja para empezar de nuevo, a lo que él accedió y me dio una nueva hoja con su firma para que empezara nuevamente haciendo el tema que me correspondía. Salí bien del apuro y con una calificación satisfactoria. Luego me puse a pensar… ¡Que bueno sería decirle a Dios ¨Me equivoqué en mi vida. ¿Podrías darme otra?! Dios no nos da otra vida, pero sí nos da todas las oportunidades para corregir la que nos dio y comenzar de nuevo. Este Año Nuevo no va a ser mejor o peor que el anterior. Todo dependerá de la actitud que tomemos al respecto y las decisiones que hagamos. Cada día es como una página en blanco que Dios nos regala. Desde la mañana hasta la noche depende de nosotros lo que hagamos de ella. Podemos hacer garabatos sin ton ni son y desperdiciarla o con mucho cuidado, podemos escribir un poema de amor, una bella canción o hacer algún dibujo artístico. Depende únicamente de nosotros que somos los que manejamos el lápiz y decidimos que hacer con él. Dependerá de nosotros que le presentemos a Dios al final de nuestros días: un bote de basura con hojas desperdiciadas o un bello álbum con obras de arte. Si despertamos mañana, es porque Dios nos ha regalado una nueva hoja para hacer de ella una obra de arte.

MADRE DE MISERICORDIA

La palabra misericordia significa

tener un corazón que se compadece.

Compadecer, a su vez, significa padecer

junto con. La misericordia viene del amor

como podemos constatar cuando un padre o

una madre sufren, padecen, unidos al hijo

que sufre. Cuando una persona ama a otras

personas más allá de los lazos del parentesco

o de la amistad, entonces se parece a Dios

que hace salir su sol y caer su lluvia sobre

buenos y malos, porque él ama a todos (Mt

5, 45).

Cuando amamos a alguien tratamos

de imitarlo. Queremos ser como la persona

amada. Si amamos a Dios, trataremos de ser

misericordiosos como él. Los hijos de Dios deberíamos

parecernos a nuestro Padre celestial.

Hay una antífona muy bella y muy amada de nuestro

pueblo que fue compuesta hacia los siglos X o XI y que

pertenece a la Liturgia de las Horas, pero que también

pertenece a la religiosidad popular: la Salve.

Todos nos la sabemos y, entonces, decimos: “Dios

te salve, reina y Madre de Misericordia…, vuelve a nosotros

esos tus ojos misericordiosos…” En efecto, la Virgen María es

Madre de Misericordia, sobre todo porque es Madre de Dios

que es misericordia a quien ama como ciertamente ningún

humano lo ha amado. María es misericordiosa con su prima

Isabel y cuando se entera de que espera un hijo en su

ancianidad, corre a las montañas de Judá para servirle con

humildad, a pesar de ser “la madre de mi Señor” como

reconoce la anciana prima. María le ofrece a Isabel no sólo

su humilde servicio solidario, sino al mismo Dios que ella

lleva en su seno y que llena del Espíritu Santo al hijo que

Isabel lleva en el suyo. María es la portadora de Dios.

Madre de Misericordia, también, cuando asiste a las

bodas de Caná y llena de compasión por los novios que ya

no tienen vino, provoca con su maternal insistencia que Jesús

haga el primer milagro convirtiendo agua en vino (Jn 2, 3).

Amamos la advocación de la Dolorosa porque

comprendemos que la misericordia de María se hizo

presente, sobre todo, en su amor maternal. En la pasión de

Cristo, la Virgen literalmente padeció con él, su corazón

compadeció.

A esa Madre de Misericordia invocamos sus hijos en

nuestros dolores, sabiendo que encontraremos en ella no

sólo a la abogada ante su Hijo, sino a la madre que nos

consuela y mima cuando sufrimos.

“Dios te salve, reina y Madre de Misericordia”

digamos devotamente, unidos a la Iglesia Católica que le ha

encomendado este santo Jubileo Extraordinario de la

Misericordia que viviremos durante todo un año.

Aprendamos a ser misericordiosos como el Padre,

pero también como nuestra Madre del cielo.

MOTHER OF MERCY

The word mercy means having a

heart that has compassion. To have

compassion, means suffering with. Mercy

comes from love, as we can see when a

father or a mother who are suffering, suffer

attached to the child. When a person loves

other people beyond the ties of kinship or

friendship, then it looks like God who

makes the sun rise and the rain fall on good

and bad, because he loves all (Mt 5, 45).

When we love someone we try to

imitate them. We want to be like the

beloved. If we love God, we try to be

merciful like him. The children of God

should be like our heavenly Father.

There is a very beautiful and beloved anthem of

our people which was composed in the tenth or eleventh

century which belongs to the Liturgy of the Hours, also it

belongs to the popular religiousness: Holy Queen,

Mother of Mercy

We all know it, we say, "Hail, Queen, Mother of

Mercy ... back to us thine eyes of mercy ..." In fact, Mary

is Mother of Mercy, especially because she is the Mother

of God who is mercy who certainly loved Him as no

human has. Mary was merciful to her cousin Isabel, and

when Mary realized Isabel was expecting a son in her old

age, she ran to the mountains of Judah to serve with

humility, despite being "the mother of my Lord" as

recognized by the elderly cousin. Mary not only offered

Isabel her humble solidarity service, but also to the same

God that she carried in her womb. The son of Isabel

which she carried in her whom, resulted in the filling of

the Holy Spirit. Mary is the bearer of God.

The Mother of Mercy, additionally, when she

attended the wedding at Cana she was full of compassion

for the couple who no longer had wine, and with her

maternal insistence caused Jesus to create the first miracle

of turning water into wine (John 2: 3).

We love the image of Our Lady of Sorrows,

because we understand that the mercy of Mary was

present, especially in her maternal love. In the passion of

Christ, the Virgin literally suffered with him, her heart

pitied.

To the Mother of Mercy we invoke her children

in our sorrows, knowing that we will find in her not only

the advocate before her Son, but the mother who

comforts and pampers us when we suffer.

"Hail, Queen, Mother of Mercy" say devoutly

attached to the Catholic Church that has entrusted this

holy Extraordinary Jubilee of mercy that will live for a

year.

Learn to be merciful in the same way as the

Father, likewise our Mother in heaven.

Oración Para el Año Nuevo

Dios, gracias por este Nuevo año. Que todos en nuestra familia estén listos para comenzar de nuevo. Sabemos que

siempre estás dispuesto al perdón. Ayúdanos a estar abiertos a perdonarnos a nosotros mismos y a los demás.

Al comienzo de este año, haznos de Nuevo conscientes de nuestros más altos valores y mejores deseos. Ayúdanos a vivir en la bondad que procede de hacer lo que Tú quieres

que hagamos. Ayúdanos a poner de lado la angustia del futuro y del pasado, de tal manera que en el presente

podamos vivir en paz contigo, cada día de nuestra vida. Amén.

O God, thank you for this New Year. May everyone in our family be willing to begin anew with a clean slate. We know

that you are always ready to forgive us. Help us to be willing to forgive ourselves and to forgive one another.

As we begin a new year, remind us of our truest values and our deepest desires. Help us to live in the goodness that

comes from doing what you want us to do. Help us to put aside anxiety about the future and the past, so that we

might live in peace with you now, one day at a time. AMEN
