Definition
• The Janu in sanskrit means The Knee.
• The structure that which is present between the Sakthi (Hip) and the Jangha (Fore leg) is referred as Janu, which is supposed to be the Knee.
• janu n. Knee Pg.099 – A Practical Sanskrit Dictionary by Arthur Anthony Macdonell, publishers London: Oxford University Press, 1929.
Number of Janu
• The Janu, which corresponds to the knee joint is present one in each of the leg.
• Thus 2 Janu marmas are present in the human body.
Classification of Janu Marma
• Based on the effect of injury the Janu marma has been classified as VAIKALYAKARA MARMA.
• Reference- Su.Sha.6/13
• Based on the structural integrity the Janu marma has been classified as SANDHI MARMA.
• Reference- Su.Sha.6/4

Interpretation
• The structure that
which binds the
Jangha (Foreleg) &
the Ooru (Thighs)is
the Janu Marma.
The janu marma
when injured
causes Khanjata
(Limping).
Probabilities of Area Of Janu Marma
The
Following areas are some of the probabilities for
being
considered as the manipulative point of Janu Marma
Method Of Palpation
Start palpating along the superior; medial ; inferior and lateral borders of the Patella
Likewise along the lateral & medial aspect of the knee joint
And finally over the poppliteal Fossa too
continued
One will notice the tenderness present but in varied degrees in the following regions
1. @ the Ilio Tibial Tract on the supero-lateral aspect of the Knee
2. @ the Poppliteal Fossa3. @ the lateral surface of the knee
corresponding to the location of Lateral Collateral Ligament
4. @ the medial surface of the Knee near infra-patellar region corresponding to the Medial Collateral ligament
5. @ the Infra-patellar region
Interpretation of the probable site of Janu Marma
Of the 5 structures mentioned in the previous slide, the highest point of tenderness will be observed in the medial surface of the knee joint corresponding to the insertion of Medial Collateral ligament.
More over as per the observation of Sushruta Khanjata or limping is the feature on Janu getting injured..
continued
The most common cause of limping occurs due to injury of the medial collateral ligament, in the form of partial or complete tear.
Considering these facts the Janu marma is determined to be present in the medial surface of the knee Joint, adjoining the infra patellar region.
