This past year was amazing for the craft beer world and it doesn’t look like things will be slowing down any time soon. Craft beer sales are booming and new breweries are popping up all over the place. Part wavy flash back scene, part crystal ball fortune telling, this is my look back at 2015 and predictions for 2016.

With all these new breweries looking to stand out and make a name for themselves, we can expect to see a rise in “weird” beers. 2015 was the year of the Grapefruit IPA, but anywhere you looked this past year you could find another brewery testing the traditional limits of beer styles. Black IPAs, IPLs, even avocado beers have found their way on to the beer scene.

Seasonal beer styles are gaining in popularity as well. It seems like each brewery is starting to offer a Summer ale, or a Christmas Ale or an Oktoberfest brew, and beer drinkers can’t get enough. It’s logical that this trend is not going to stop.

There’s also been some growth in sour ale offerings on the beer market. Whether just

a fad or if sour ales are here to stay is yet to be seen, but given their unique flavors, I don’t see sour ales taking off. I do see experimentation with gas as a big hit this year, with breweries like Guinness leading the way with its Nitro IPA.

The business of brewing is set to make some very big changes too. The number of breweries in America rose by 18% last year! To compare, restaurants grew by just under 3%. The beer drinkers have spoken, and they want local beer. If the trend continues, we will see more operating breweries in America than ever before. The big guys see this trend and are doing all they can to hold back the tide. AB InBev, the company that owns Budweiser, is merging with SABMillerCoors to form the largest brewing company in the world. AB InBev continues to buy out local, smaller breweries as well, swallowing up their competition. I guess as the saying goes, if you can’t beat them, buy them.

However as this year moves forward, I’m sure there will be great new beers to try and plenty of reasons to say “cheers”.

There’s always that great song airing on radio, one that

you can’t help but to sing along. It instantly transports you to where you were when you first heard it. Maybe it’s Led Zeppelin’s Misty Mountain Hop, Styx’s Come Sail Away, Boston’s Rock n Roll Band, Journey’s Any Way You Want It, or Def Leopard’s Rock of Ages. That is the magic of Illegally Blind: Deni Jerome (lead vocals), Joe Miglionico (bass guitar/backing vocals), James Ricci (drums), Damon Fabrio (keyboards/backing vocals), and Leroy Aiello (lead guitar/backing vocals) carrying their audience, song after song, on a musical trip down rock music’s memory lane. In 2014, Illegally Blind was imagined by Joe Miglionico (bass). He was enjoying dinner out with his wife, Joelle, when he first heard Deni Jerome sing as a guest singer for the performing band. Joe found her voice “powerful” and decided to approach her and they both began singing along with the band. “I’m going to put a band together around your voice”, Joe told Deni, who seemed flattered but skeptical.

That night, Joe posted an advertisement for players to do a keyboard-based classic rock project. This is where their story begins to unfold. Replying to the ad, Damon Fabrio (keyboards) said he could do that style music and would be happy to join, but was unable to get to rehearsals because he is blind. Joe assured Damon if he could play, Joe would get him to rehearsal. After guitarist Ralph Guidi joined the band, James Ricci (drums) was next to audition. “James showed up with his wife and proceeded

to bang his kit off every wall in my house trying to get to my studio downstairs”, recalled Joe. “He set up and that’s when he told us that he was legally blind”. What are the chances of two blind players auditioning for the same band? He was a perfect fit and was asked to join after just two songs.” The name Illegally Blind was born. The band debuted in October 2014 at the Vic Tavern in Bayonne, New Jersey. Shortly after January 2015, Leroy Aiello replaced Guidi as lead guitarist. “Leroy’s ability, experience and enthusiasm elevated the band immediately” recalled Joe. “We all started to gel and we were adding new music and more and more gigs.” Illegally Blind defines its music style as keyboard-based classic rock. A typical set for Illegally Blind would include: Any Way You Want It, Journey; Rock n Roll Band, Boston; Don’t Tell Me You Love Me; Night Ranger; Piece of My Heart, Janis Joplin; Carry On My Wayward Son, Kansas; Rock of ages, Def Leopard; Keep On Loving You, REO Speedwagon; Misty Mountain Hop, Led Zeppelin; Dream on, Aerosmith; Comfortably Numb, Pink Floyd and Come Sail

Away, Styx. What are the band’s personal favorites? Joe named Renegade, Styx because they love the harmonies and are lucky to have four voices. Also, Piece of My Heart, Janis Joplin because Deni kills it. Lastly, Comfortably Numb, Pink Floyd because Leroy Aiello brings the house down and is amazing to hear and see. “At the end of the night, we hope people have genuinely enjoyed themselves,” Joe explained “we hope to have brought back memories of songs they forgot about, but

still remember the words. Hopefully, they will spend their time with us again. We really enjoy performing for our fans, it’s what drives us”. Here’s where you can find Illegally Blind: The Blue Rock Café in Keyport every first Friday of the month for all of 2016. Look for them at Crossroads in Garwood this coming spring and at Martell’s Tiki Bar, Point Pleasant Beach this summer. Joe also talked about one of Illegally Blind’s best experiences as a band. “This past summer we had the privilege of playing for the Staten Island Chapter of Rolling Thunder. They hosted a day for the Road Home Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping local seriously injured veterans. This experience was so much fun for them, but more so for us. It was so humbling. If you didn’t smile through your tears you were not human, these veterans are amazing. We will be back there this summer and we can’t wait.”

Drink Recipes

The Hot ToddyIngredients:• 1 oz brandy, whiskey, or rum• 1 Tbsp honey• 1/4 lemon• 1 cup hot water• 1 tea bagPreparation:1. Coat the bottom of a mug or an Irish coffee glass with honey. 2. Add the liquor and the juice of the lemon quarter. 3. On the side, heat water in a tea kettle and add the tea bag to make hot tea. 4. Pour the steaming tea into the glass and stir.

Hot Apple ToddyIngredients:• 2 oz whiskey or apple brandy• 1 tsp sugar• Hot apple cider• Lemon wedge for garnish• Cinnamon stick for garnish• 2-3 whole cloves for garnish

Preparation:1. Coat the bottom of an Irish coffee glass with honey. 2. Add the whiskey or apple brandy. 3. Fill with hot apple cider. 4. Stir well. 5. Garnish with the lemon, cinnamon stick, and cloves

Classic Tom & JerryIngredients:• 1 egg• 1/2 oz simple syrup or 1 tsp powdered sugar• 1 oz dark rum• 1 oz Cognac or brandy• Hot milk or hot water• Grated nutmeg for garnishPreparation:1. Separate the egg white from the egg yolk and beat them separately. 2. Fold the beaten eggs together and place into an Irish coffee glass. 3. Add the sugar or simple syrup, dark rum, and brandy. 4. Fill with hot milk or hot water. 5. Stir well. 6. Garnish with grated nutmeg.

Mulled Pomegranate WarmerIngredients: (Serves 8-10 Drinks)• 1 cup PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur• 4 lemons, sliced• 2 oranges, sliced• 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg• 12 whole cloves• 4 cinnamon sticks• 2 cups sugar• 1 1/4 cup water• 2 bottles red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot)Preparation:1. In a saucepan over low-medium heat, combine all ingredients. 2. Heat for 15-20 minutes. Do not bring to a boil. 3. Remove from heat and strain. 4. Return liquid to pan and serve warm.

Mulled White Wine w/ Pear BrandyIngredients: (Serves 4 Drinks)

1 750 ml bottle dry or off-dry white wine (preferably Riesling or Grüner Veltliner) • 1 piece star anise • 2 1/4-inch slices fresh ginger • 3 green cardamom pods • 3 whole cloves • 3 to 4 tablespoons honey, or to taste • 1/4 cup pear brandy (Poire William) • 1 Asian pear

Preparation:1. Put the wine in a medium,

heavy-bottomed saucepan with the star anise, ginger, cardamom, cloves and honey (start with 3 tablespoons and adjust later if

necessary). Set the pan over medium heat and bring just to a simmer, stir ring occasionally. Turn off the heat and let the wine mull for at least 15 to 20 minutes. 2. Taste the wine and add more honey if you’d like. Gently reheat the wine until it starts to steam, then turn off the heat and stir in the brandy. Divide among 4 mugs or heatproof glasses, putting a few of the spices in each glass if you’d like, and add a slice of Asian pear. Toddy away!

Bourbon Cider CocktailIngredients• 1 part Maker’s Mark® Bourbon• 1 tsp to 1 tbsp Sugar• 2 dashes Bitters• 3 parts Hard Cider, Dry• Garnish with Cherry, Maraschino

Preparation:1.In a c h a m p a g n e glass,stir together the

sugar and the bitters until the sugar dissolves. 2. 2. Add Makers Mark® Bourbon. Top with cold cider. 3. 3. Garnish with a cherry and slice of orange.

Jamie Jackowskiby CLARE MARIE CELANO

Jamie Jackowski tends bar at Game Time Bar & Grill in iPlay America in Freehold Township, but this ambitious young woman is also planning to become a flight nurse and save lives.

Currently a student at Brookdale Community College, Jackowski will graduate this year and plans to transfer to a four year college to complete her nursing degree and training as flight nurse.

This Howell resident said she was inspired as a child to become a flight nurse after finding out that her brother, who had been severely injured after being attacked, was saved by a flight nurse.

“I was told that the only reason my brother survived was because of the flight nurse who cared for him,” Jackowski said in an interview. She remembers the 2005 incident as having such an impact on her that her career goal was set that day.

Jackowski’s ultimate goal is to work in pediatric oncology, in addition to being on call as flight nurse, meaning if she is on duty and there is a need, she will be called upon to ride on the helicopter and care for a patient

being transferred to another medical facility.

In the meantime, Jamie tends bar while maintaining a full time status as a nursing student. She began working at Game Time as a server four years ago, but moved to bartending about three years ago. “Bartending allows me to interact and connect with guests on a level different from that of a server,”

Jackowski said.

Previously, she worked as a server at Hop

and Buffalo Wild Wings, both in Brick. She also served as a medical assistant at an ob/gyn office for a little under a year in 2015. When asked why she chose to work as a bartender, she said, “Because I

love the one-on-one interactions and relationships that you get to have with a guest when you are behind the bar. I love my regulars and enjoy being involved in their lives,” she adds.

“I also love the friendships I have formed working behind the bar. The stories that I hear as a bartender are the best. They make me laugh and help me relate to guests at another level.”

In between her studies and her bartending work, Jamie makes time to indulge in one of her favorite pastimes - watching hockey games on TV, especially New York Rangers hockey games.

“I’m not just a New York Rangers fan, but a ‘die heart’ Rangers fan. I have gotten my mom into hockey and now she yells at the TV with me during all New York Ranger games,” she revealed.

Jamie began her fervor over the New York Rangers when she was just 9 years old and says she “fell in love” with the game. I have a love and a passion for the game of hockey which only grew as I got older

We here in Central NJ have been “blessed” this past month with unusually warm weather for this time of year. While there are definite benefits (no need for heavy clothing, lower NJNG bills, etc.), we are accustom in these parts to four distinct seasons and, if you’re like me, you start looking forward to colder weather and snow.

An abundance of snowflakes invites not only the imagination to run wild, it engenders a certain desire to expend energy and surround oneself with the healthy slight sting of invigorating cold air. Skiing, snowboarding, snowtubing and sledding on a mountaintop is a rush – and it is great exercise, especially after holiday gluttony.

New Jersey and Pennsylvania offer several nearby mountain resorts that are magnificent for the entire family. Each also provides

instruction for all levels as well as full packages. And of course, little ones can simply enjoy building a snowfort or snowfamily with their own families. And they all have lodges for relaxing, enjoying winter cocktails and conviviality. Several are located in or nearby towns for shopping and enjoying meals and local restaurants.

Former New Jersey Ski Area Gets a New Mission - NWAC

Hidden Valley Ski Area has been closed for two years but under new ownership, it will become an educational ski center run

by a nonprofit organization. The Ski Center has been welcoming youth from area cities and youth organizations to learn how to ski on weekends.

Schone Malliet, the center’s chief executive officer who co-founded its umbrella organization National Winter Sports Education Foundation, said the objective of the center will be to “provide all youth with the experience to enjoy outdoors.”

Malliet said his organization will partner with YMCAs, Boys and Girls clubs, schools, churches and youth groups from within a 70-mile radius of Vernon, including New York City.

The goal is to make children “outdoor enthusiasts” in order to improve their physical health, said Malliet. He said he hopes it will lower obesity rates among children by making them more active in the winter months.

He plans to have youth groups taking part in six visits during the winter and two visits in the offseason. Along with learning how to ski, the children will be

fitted for equipment and will be introduced to coaches and mentors. The mentoring aspect of the program is a significant part. He calls it “esteem building,” and he wants to build confidence in children and teach the importance of setting and achieving goals.

The NWAC plans to partner with nearby Mountain Creek on packages so the children who learn how to ski here can move

on to ski regularly at Mountain Creek. They have hired Mountain Creek instructors as well.

More than $5 million will be spent on improvements at the ski area, including new snowmaking equipment, new chairlifts, a renovated ski lodge and trail widening. The work will be financed through Malliet’s National Winter Sports Education Foundation.

The revival of “Fiddler on the Roof ” that recently opened at the Broadway Theater in NYC includes all the cherished characters (Tevye, Golde, their five daughters, and their neighbors) and all the unforgettable language (“Even a poor tailor is entitled to some happiness!”). For months, the innovation, which consumes perhaps one minute in a show that is 155 minutes long, has been debated by the show’s Tony-winning director, Bartlett Sher, and its Tony-winning lyricist, Sheldon Harnick, who at 91 is the last surviving member of the show’s original creative team. Mr. Sher was adamant that the revival should explicitly, if briefly and quietly, connect to current events; Mr. Harnick repeatedly objected, leery of any changes to a show that has totemic power for several generations of theatergoers. Ultimately, after weeks of previews, Mr. Harnick acceded to the staging.

A Review

He was persuaded, he said, by audience feedback. The debate offers a window into the complexity of reviving beloved stage shows. Long-ago creations are often radically re-imagined without incident. But “Fiddler” is in a class by itself. It is among the best known, most popular and most staged shows in the history of musical theater. There have been plenty of variations over the years, particularly in school and community productions — Mr. Harnick unhappily recalls a production set in a tenement, rather than in Anatevka, and one in which a tree was planted on the stage and grew throughout the show. “People generally have deep attachments to musicals, and to how they remember them, but ‘Fiddler’ has that quality more than any musical that’s ever existed, because of the force it had” said Alisa Solomon, the author

of “Wonder of Wonders: A Cultural

History of ‘Fiddler on the Roof.’” This production is passionately respectful of the original; intense, but deeply familiar, to anyone who has seen the show before. There are subtle but crucial visual changes — in particular, it features work by a contemporary choreographer, whereas most productions rely primarily on the original choreography by Jerome Robbins. But the most striking change is the framing device: At the start, a bareheaded man, wearing a red parka and carrying a book, walks onto a stage that is empty but for a chair and a sign that says, in Cyrillic, “Anatevka.” The man speaks the show’s prologue words (“A fiddler on the roof? Sounds crazy, no?”), and, as he does, he puts

on a cap, removes his coat, untucks a

prayer shawl, and, as if investigating his past, transforms into Tevye, leading the cast into “Tradition.” At the end of the show, the device is mirrored — the Jews of Anatevka are leaving their hometown, under orders from the Russian government, and as they pull their carts around the stage, the actor emerges with red coat, bare head and book, picks up Tevye’s cart alongside his family, and joins the exodus.“ You see him enter the line of refugees, making sure we place ourselves in the line of refugees, as it reflects our past and affects our present,” Mr. Sher said. “I’m not trying to make a statement about it, but art can help us imagine it, and I would love it if families left the theater debating it.”

Comic Relief

Sadly, Selena Coppack’s aBostonian and doesn’t understand that the only real teams to root for are in NY and NJ. I jest of course (kinda, sorta). Coppack has been performing stand up for eight years and her new book, The New Rules For Blondes, launches in April.

Were you “the funny one” growing up?

I come from a very funny home and my older sister Laurel is a comedian, too. So I wasn’t really ‘the funny one’ at home so much as Laurel and I spent a lot of time writing musicals in our bedrooms, choreographing strange dance numbers, and watching “Saturday Night Live” since age 7. I think that my parents and oldest sister Emily are super hilarious, too. But yes, I’ve always been a bit of a ham and really interested in comedy and performing.

Along those lines, did you do all the school productions? Where’d you grow up? Or rather, if you’re anything like me, where were you raised?

I grew up outside of Boston and I did all of the school plays growing up -- I absolutely loved performing and the excitement of rehearsing and being in shows. I did some professional theater in Boston (at the Boston Baked Theater--now gone) and in high school I became interested in singing, too. I went to college in upstate NY where I majored in English and didn’t do any of the plays on campus; but I was in the only co-ed a cappella group on campus (the Hamilton College Hamiltones) and the improv troupe. After school I moved to Chicago

to study improv comedy further and it was improv that really led me to standup. I did improv for years and eventually I just got sick of working with other people, which makes me sound like a total curmudgeon, I know.

Stand up is very tough. You have to be able to take rejection. How’d you handle your first bomb, unless you’re the one comic who’s never experienced that?

The rejection is definitely hard and it’s something that everyone -- even my comedy idols -- have experienced at some point. Early on I think that I wanted the audience to like me, which can be dangerous territory, especially for female comedians. You have to be confident and feel entitled to be up there with the microphone and that took me a while to figure out -- how to just own the stage and trust myself more. I think of standup as like training a dog -- if you get out there and you’re confident and in control, the audience is with you. But if you exude a sense of nervousness or you seem insecure, they’ll eat you alive. I’ve been doing standup for about eight years and even now sometimes I’ll have a show where I can sense that certain people in the audience aren’t completely on board with me and it makes me feel nervous, but I know to just plow through it and keep on going and eventually I’ll hit on a joke or reference that wins them over.

Is this a means to an end? “SNL”, sitcoms, head writer--what’s your goal?

I definitely don’t think of standup as a means to an end and I think that comedians who do are pretty miserable people. It has to be its own reward or else you’re crazy to do this thing. But as far as my goal, mine is pretty broad: I’d like for my comedy (performance, writing) to pay for my life. I don’t know exactly how that will shake out, but I’d like my job to be what I love to do, which is write and perform comedy. I have a book coming out in April (The New Rules for Blondes, from It Books/HarperCollins), which I hope will open up new opportunities for me. It’s a collection of humorous essays celebrating and subverting the blonde stereotype, but it’s for readers of all hair colors.

Joey Kola

I have had the pleasure of interviewing comedians for about two years now. Over that period of time I’ve met some who are famous, some not so famous and some who work a couple hundred days a year, earning a great living and yet are not as well known. Joey Kola is one of those hard working and unsung comics. Joey is from Brooklyn (okay, who isn’t?) and grew up on Long Island. I guess that fits the mold of almost all the name comedians out there (Seinfeld, Eddie Murphy, Rosie O’Donnell, Billy Crystal, Jon Stewart, Kevin James—you get the idea). Anyway, I had a few minutes with Joey and here’s some of what I learned.

Venues-NJ: Joey, you were born in Brooklyn and moved to Long Island when you were a kid. Did you have a sense early on that you were going to be a comedian?

Joey Kola: Ya know, when I was little, not more than 4 or 5 years old, my Uncle Ralph used to play the guitar and all us kids used to take turns with the microphone. I knew I enjoyed that but I honestly didn’t come out of my shell until much later, after high school.

V-NJ: So it was in college that things started to happen?

JK: Not really until after college. I majored in Finance and Theater was my minor. I acted in a few plays in college but didn’t really do the stand-up

stuff until later. I started to do warm up in the early 90’s when Jon Stewart had a TV show and we shared managers. I did that for a few years until it went off the air and then I started working with David Letterman doing the same thing.

V-NJ: I assume warm up is what we think it is, prepping the audience for the main act. How does that work?

JK: Like I said, I started with Jon Stewart in ’93 and I’m more of a conversationalist. I try to get the audience involved in the whole experience. I don’t perform for them, I perform with them. I try to get everyone, even the quiet ones, involved so when the “headliner” comes out, everyone feels like they have a vested interest in the show.

V-NJ: I know you’ve worked all over, cruise ships, colleges, corporate events and just about all 50 states. Are you still travelling all over?

JK: Actually not so much. I’ve been working the warm up for the Rachel Ray Show for a while now and it’s a regular gig. Rachel is one of the hardest working people I’ve ever been associated with. I’ve done warm up for Letterman in ’96, Rosie O’Donnell’s show, Jane Paulie, Who Wants to be a Millionaire and Martha Stewart. Rachel Ray sometimes does as many as sixty segments a week and we usually do 3 shows a day, 3 days a week. It can be a long day. I usually leave the house at 5:30am and get home at 9pm on taping days.

V-NJ: : So the travelling is

almost non-existent now?

JK: I wouldn’t say that. 2016 is pretty much booked solid. I do the shows on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and perform stand-up on the weekends. This week I have Uncle Vinnie’s in Point Pleasant and I think next week I have the Borgata in Atlantic City, so I’m still a working comedian but I don’t travel as far or as often.

These rides are given to those who find themselves stranded or without a safe means of transportation. D Squared was formed in January 2014, almost one year after Stephan and Karen Dushnick lost both of their sons, Stephan and Michael, in a vehicular accident. After this tragedy the Dushnick family felt compelled to create a program for their sons’ friends, their neighbors’ children and all youth by extending to them a safe ride home, AT NO COST. Golden Rule“Do unto others as you would have them

do unto you” The other night I happened to catch the People’s Choice Awards on TV. Among all the celebrity awards given out, Ellen DeGeneres was honored and received the Humanitarian Award for her charity work and for her “kindness to others”. In her acceptance speech, she said she was amazed that she would receive such an award “for being kind to people, something we should all do.”

In other words, she was saying that we should all follow the Golden Rule. However, in today’s world, there are two versions of the Rule that are followed:

One positive - Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. One negative - Do unto others before they do unto you.

The positive version is derived from the laws of Moses and the teachings of the prophets (Luke 6:31); the negative version is a reflection on today’s society.

As civilized people in today’s world, most of us practice the positive version. Whether dealing with family members, friends, co-workers or just in our daily lives, we try to be kind to those around us. However, there are others in today’s society who practice the negative version. These individuals, due to greed, selfishness, misguided justification or simply ignorant pride, have a need to feel superior. It doesn’t work. In the long run, it comes back to bite you in the ass.

As we enter into this New Year, let’s try to start on a positive note. As Glen Campbell versed in his 2002 hit song “…. Try a little kindness.” You’ll be amazed how it will make you feel.
