Jane Long

1798-1880

Childhood

• Jane Long was born on July 23, 1798, in Charles County, Maryland.

• When she was less than a year old, Jane’s father died.

• In 1811, Jane moved with her mother to the Mississippi Territory.

• Her mother died the following year, and she went to live with her sister.

Marriage & Family

• Jane met James Long in 1815. He was a physician.

• They were married in May of that year, and by November of 1816 they had their first child.

Adult Life

• Jane moved with her husband to Bolivar Point (a peninsula opposite Galveston Island) in 1820.

• They had another child there, and her husband was killed while traveling to Mexico City.

• Jane did not know of her husband’s death till 1822.

• She and her servants survived on very little food, and they were under threat of attack by Indians.

Career

• After her husband’s death, a friend convinced her to move away from Bolivar Point.

• She moved to Brazoria and opened a hotel in 1832.

• Her hotel became very successful. Many famous people came to stay there, including William Travis and Sam Houston.

• When Stephen Austin returned from 18 months in a Mexican prison, she held a dinner and ball for him at her hotel.

Life Ends

• Jane died on December 30, 1880. She was 82 years old.

• She is buried in Richmond, Texas.

Jane Long is known as “The

Mother of Texas”.

From her we can learn to never give up no matter what comes. We also learn from her that anyone can make a difference.
