THE FRAMEWORKCreating a CISO Personal Brand
• Define the personal brand.
• Why you need to develop a remarkable personal brand.
• The process – 7 steps - for developing a personal brand that attracts opportunities to you so you’ll receive opportunities, information & intelligence ahead of others.
• The main mistakes people make when trying to build a personal brand & how you can avoid making them.
Agenda
Personal brand Definitions
1. The practice of people marketing themselves and their careers as brands.
2. The perception people have of you compared to others in similar positions.
3. It’s what people say about you when you leave the room.
NB. Brands are built on what people are saying about you not what you’re saying about yourself.
• Developing a personal brand means figuring out who you really are, who you want to serve & how you differ from every other CISO.
• Creating a consistent, targeted, “human” impression in your market so you can achieve your personal & professional goals plus live authentically.
• To create an influential personal brand you need to de-commoditize yourself.
It’s not WHAT or WHO you know, it’s who the people you know know
The essentials
• Objective/ why & goals
• Audience/ target market
• Vision, mission & values
• Unique take on things
• Strengths/ key differentiators
• Competition
• Personality
• Pitch
• Commitment/ frequency
• Feedback
1. Consider your objective
2. Create credibility
1-minute pitch
• Who you are
• What you do & the industry you work in
• What makes you credible, unique & relevant
• What are you passionate about
• What are your short-term/ long-term goals
Goal: to get noticed & be remembered
What’s your story?
• Facts tell & stories sell so if someone is going to listen to your story you must ensure good communication:
• Dress sense, voice & body language
• Props & imagery
• Framework
• Emotion
Goal: to make your story engaging & memorable
3. Move online
Who the Google are you?
When someone Google’s your name, the 1st page of results is how the world sees you. If you don’t show up – you’re a nobody!
• Is it clear what you do?
• Is it clear what you’re good at?
• Are you referenced & can testimonials about you be found?
To do list
• Consider your digital footprint as you’re now an asset• Pick your communication platforms• Create the right image – headshots, bios etc.• Build your network• Share great content – curated & created• Blog
Goal: stand out for all the right reasons, convey the genuine you & be remembered as a hub for intelligence
Your professional headshot
Your eye grabbing bio
Your headline
Your summary
4. Create content
• Your network is hungry for content especially anything that’s visual or emotionally appealing. Start reading what your influencers are reading & then share it across your social networks.
• Give before you get & become known as the source or “hub” as this positions you as an influencer & leader.
What content?
• Read – blogs, articles, white papers, surveys, reports, books, press releases
• Watch - interviews, talks, testimonials, explainers, presentations, demos
• Look at – photos, diagrams, infographics, cartoons, graphs
• Listen to – podcasts, sound-bites
• Participate in – competitions, quiz, webinars

The power of images
5. Communicate, build rapport & nurture relationships
6. Move offline
Get noticed offline
• Volunteer for projects at work
• Volunteer for initiatives outside of work – universities, schools, charities etc.
• Participate in panels and speaking events
Goal: to complete the picture of brand you, and further differentiate yourself.
7. Be consistent
In summary
• It’s about sharing & helping.
• It’s not about expecting to get a reward from it, although that often happens.
• It’s not about giving before you receive. Your reward will often not come from the original source.
• It’s about delivering practical expert advice, being accessible, so you set yourself up for success.
Remember
• When you use the methods I’ve taught strategically you‘ll be connecting with more influencers, moving from that outer circle to the inner circle, and attracting more opportunities.
So ask yourself. Are you getting the results you want?
Can you afford not to understand how to do this?
