I have chosen to preach a series of sermons entitled “Moses and The Promised Land”, as we explore the Old Testament story of the Exodus from Egypt, and how Moses led the ancient Hebrew people toward the land of Canaan, which is modern- day Israel. The inspiration for these sermons came from my summer reading at Chautauqua, NY, and one book in particular which caught my attention – “America’s Prophet: Moses and the American Story” by the best-selling author Bruce Feiler who grew up in Georgia. My hope and prayer is that these sermons will bring this old, old story alive for us today, and help us recognize the significant connections between the Exodus event (circa 1300 B.C.) and our American experience – past, present and future. We’ll focus our attention on the themes of Faith and Freedom, Hope Overcoming Despair, Idols and Values, Unity and Diversity and Conflicts in the Middle East. BLESSED NEW YEAR AND GOD BE WITH YOU! On Epiphany Sunday, January 2, the title of the sermon will be “A Vision To Guide Us,” and I encourage you to read Exodus 3 and 4 about the burning bush and Moses’ call from God to “Let My People Go.” The following week, on Founders’ Sunday, January 9, we’ll concentrate on the theme “Every Exit Is An Entrance” from Exodus 12: 29 – 51. Please pray with me that these sermons and our services in early January will inspire all those who worship with us in the sanctuary, on WSB radio (Sunday mornings at 7:30am), AIB TV (Wednesday evenings at 8:00) and through our recent and increasingly popular Webcasts on the Internet – www. firstpresatl.org/servicesonline. I also hope that you will invite your family and friends to join us here at the corner of 16th and Peachtree every Sunday as we make this “sacred journey” together. Join our church members and friends from across the city as we serve God, celebrate Martin Luther King’s birthday and his legacy by reaching out to others during The Urban Ministry Conference (see the article to left for complete details). Making a Difference in a Com-munity of Need. Remembering, Celebrating and Acting through compassionate Service.

The Partnership Ministry and Community Ministries are

working together to present the 2011 Urban Ministry Conference January 13-17. The Partnership Ministry will be sponsoring two events, Dinner and A Movie on Friday night January 14 and a Spiritual Retreat on Saturday January 15, both events to be held at First Presbyterian Church. The Conference will focus on “Building the Beloved Commu-nity” based on Ephesians 2:14: “For he himself is our peace, who

has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility.” Friday night’s Dinner & A Movie will feature “Invictus” the story of how a South African soccer team became a symbol of overcoming the barriers of apartheid in the wake of Presi-dent Mandela’s victory. The film, starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon will be a perfect intro-duction to Saturday’s conference. Plan now to attend both events, Childcare will be available upon request. To register call Connie Lee at 404-228-7741 or Anne Drake at 404-228-7746.

2011 Annual Giving campaign

Y o u r P l e d G e a t w o r k

We hear so much these days regarding housing foreclosures and the lack of affordable housing. But, the support received through our Annual Giving Campaign makes it possible to be a partner with Habi-tat for Humanity in building afford-able, energy-effi-

cient homes for working families in Atlanta. In 2010, First Pres-byterian’s Commu-nity Ministries com-pleted two homes in partnership with Haygood Memo-rial United Methodist,

N o r t h w e s t Presbyterian, Sacred Heart Catholic, and Morningside Pres-byterian Churches. Although the to-tal cost of a single Habitat home is fifty five thousand

dollars for church sponsors, such sum can never be

compared to the to the satisfaction the 74 First Presbyterian Church volunteers received in sharing

the dream of home ownership with fellow

human beings. This year, the 2011 Annual Giving Campaign pledge goal is 800 pledges. As of December 24, we have received 578 pledg-es. Please consider making your pledge today! Simply fill out the pledge card below or visit us on-line at www.firstpresatl.org.
