Yes, 2011 is going to be a great year for Jazz 91 listeners. We’ve got excellent straight ahead free-form programming, gifted and talented on-air hosts sharing their love and knowledge of jazz, lots of fun guests popping in and out of the studio, and you – our fabulous listener/supporters.

That’s right, your support makes all the wonderful things that happen at KCSM possible. We know you know that, so why not spread the word and share the wonders of Jazz 91 with your friends? You can make a real difference by asking them to call in and support the station during our next fund drive.

We’re going to fire up our Winter Wonderland Fun(d) Drive on January 25th. Right now we’re putting the finishing touches on some really good programming for the drive, and we’re working hard to find that extra special gift or two that’ll fly off the shelves and make us, and you, happy.

Remember, we’ve only got this Winter Drive and the Spring Drive left in our fiscal year so we need to stay on track and reach our goal. Each drive has a target and as soon as we reach it, we stop. Right now the end date is February 11th, but you could help us end it earlier than that.

We’re also working on some fun event ideas for 2011 that would let us all get together and spend some time sharing our love of jazz. We’ve got a great community of folks who listen to the station here in the Bay Area and around the world. Our fund drives are a time to hear from them and you. Your messages are often very heart- warming and they keep our spirits high during the drive. They’re our favorite part of a very difficult job.

Alright, let’s make this Winter Wonderland Fun(d) Drive as joyful as a sleigh ride in newly fallen snow and as magical as a shimmery moonlit winter evening. We’ll do our part to keep the music coming. You do your part to keep the home fires burning.

The sound of surprise describes both jazz itself and the enduring premise of "The Annals of Jazz." Since 1959, host Richard Hadlock has been improvising on historical themes and bringing forth worthy performers—from Armstrong to Zorn. Small bands of street musicians enlivened the streets of Flores do Pajeú, hometown of Brazilian composer and saxophonist Moacir Santos (pictured). He painted those hometown landscapes in musical score. In the Rose Theater Guitarist Mario Adnet and saxophonist Zé Nogueira capture the spirit of Brazil and this little known composer.

From the new crop of crooners: vocals by Tierney Sutton (pictured) envelope the room; Loston Harris wraps his voice in the notes of his keyboard. Their double bill at Rose Hall portends a bright future for the art of the song. Lewis Nash hosts.

Red Norvo (pictured) is the lesser known of the two early pioneers of the vibraphone in jazz (the other is Lionel Hampton). This show looks at the multi-faceted musical career of Norvo, from his earliest experiments with avant-garde jazz, to his big bands with wife/singer Mildred Bailey, to his critically acclaimed trio with bassist Charles Mingus and guitarist Tal Farlow.

Whether he was disdained as a charlatan or revered as a pioneer, there is no denying the influence of Sun Ra (pictured) on several generations of musicians. He was an avatar of free improvisation and was the first to bring electronics and synthesizers into jazz. But, this space traveler was also a pianist for the Fletcher Henderson big band. This show showcases Sun Ra's musical cosmic swing.

The multi sax man fills Fort Adams State Park with swagger and sweetness. Carter (pictured) exaggerates and pokes fun, grooves over a great shuffle, loves building momentum, and has no fear of an extended ending. With Gerard Gibbs, organ, and Leonard King, drums.

On this new session, host McPartland (pictured) and friends get together on the bandstand at one of the world's most elegant jazz venues as Piano Jazz bids 2010 goodbye and welcomes the New Year with musical family young and old.

Trumpeter Brian Lynch (pictured) possesses a wide command of the jazz spectrum. Often called on by band leaders from Latin, straight ahead, and bebop camps, his 2007 album with Eddie Palmieri, Simpatico, won a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album. Lynch joins host Jon Weber for a set of his original tunes and a few standards.

In a gem of a performance from 26 years ago celebrating Talking to the Sun (Enja 1983), Abbey sings Abbey. People on the Street is for the homeless, The River is about cars streaming down freeways, and I'm A Painted Lady on the Stage is about Abbey (pictured). This show was originally a live WBGO broadcast from a small Orange, NJ, club.
