TAMPA’S MOST EXPERIENCED RUNNING STORE STAFF
It is time for the Disney and the Gasparilla Distance Classic races and all the other running events that
fall into the January and February race calendar. Many people plan their running lives around the Disney and Gasparilla events and train through the holidays to be ready. Many people have spent hours of running on hard sidewalks and have been beating up their bodies. Sidewalks are about ten times harder than the asphalt or treadmills. There is a new shoe category which has been championed by several shoe companies that want to try to give you more cushioning for these harder services.
In retrospect, we have seen the minimalist era bring about changes in how some performance running footwear is designed. The top brands from the old minimalist era have slowed down in sales, but did give rise to new models that offer supportive lighter weight running. Major companies like Saucony changed some of their top sellers to a lower drop shoe with less weight. The drop of a shoe is the ratio from the back of the shoe to the front of the shoe. Typical running shoes have had a 12mm drop but now we find many of the best sellers are at a 10mm drop(Asics 2000-3) or 8mm drop (Saucony Guide 7). We also find that many of the top sellers have reduced weight. These shoes still offer the same support and cushioning that the old heavier models provided.
As the minimalist idea regarding footwear has waned this new category of Maximalist has emerged. The first time I saw a Hoka maximalist shoe several years ago, it looked like two flat marshmallows with a running upper. These shoes were initially used by the ultra runners but have evolved into some mainstream models. Hoka’s Clifton model has become a top seller and provides a highly cushioned lightweight ride. These maximalist shoes differ in several ways from the minimalist shoes but they are not the opposite. The maximalist shoes offer a low drop anywhere
from a 8mm drop to a 0 drop depending on the model and company. These shoes are much lighter than they look and are about the same weight as a lightweight trainer. The uniqueness of these shoes relates to its stack height. The typical running shoe has about a 24mm stack height whereas the Hokas and some of the Altra models have between 27mm to 36mm. With extra stack height, these shoes offer superior cushioning.
Depending on the model, these shoes can also offer extra support. Hoka was the original shoe in this category but Altra has developed several models and as the year goes on we will see similar styles from Asics (33-M), New Balance (Boracay) and Skechers (Ultra Exteme). The general thought from the running industry is that these types of shoes will be around longer than the minimalist trend because they work with almost every running style. If you feel your body has been taking an extra pounding from the hard surfaces, you might want to give them a try.

KNOWLEDGE by FITniche Winter 2014
THE COMEBACK! RETURNING FROM INJURY or LAYOFF
After time off or when coming back from an injury, it’s tempting to jump back in the game with some “easy” mileage. Problem is, most people’s “easy” mileage is way too much, especially if you’ve
taken more than a couple weeks off or suffered an injury. What “easy” meant when you were healthy (2-3 miles sound familiar?) can be several hundred percent too much when starting back!
THE PLAN
1) DAY 1…run 1-2 minutes at an easy pace. That’s all. You can walk more if you like.
2) NEXT TRAINING DAY (whether it’s the next day or several days later) add 1-2 minutes to your running time.
3) Keep adding 1-2 minutes to each next run. When you get to 30 continuous minutes without pain, you are officially back! This process takes most people 2-3 weeks.
Join Club FITniche in Hyde Park today for just $30 and save $20 on ALL new shoes for the next 2 years! See our accompanying ad for more details. This promotion excludes items of Brooks, Saucony and others which are subject to a unilateral minimum advertised price policy. Please check in-‐store or by phone to confirm actual prices of individual items we offer for sale to club members.
Start with 1-2 minutes running, followed by as long a walk as you want. That’s it for day 1. Warning: if you are a highly competitive person or like to see quick results, this plan may drive you a little nuts! But it will work. The plan was shared with us by Dror Vaknin (Progressive Running team founder and Head Coach at UT), who has used it for years with national caliber runners. We’ve shared it with hundreds, maybe thousands, of runners at our stores since. It’s simple, and it just seems to always work. But you have to follow the plan. The distances may seem ridiculously short. They are. And you’ll have to fight the urge to do more. Be sure you follow the plan. And be very patient. It’s the plan’s super-slow, super-incremental build-up that allows even still-injured parts to heal, and simultaneously regain strength without risk of re-injury.

The Gas Laws of Physics state: ‘more gas dissolves under increased pressure......
and gas will diffuse further and faster as its pressure increases’ Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) delivers oxygen at a pressure greater than sea level atmospheric pressure while the patient is enclosed within a certified pressurized chamber. The patient breathes oxygen while wearing a mask for approximately 60 minutes. When red blood cells deliver only a limited supply of oxygen to tissue cells, negative physiological changes occur. Injuries, infections and diseases can cause a drop in tissue oxygen level to almost zero. World wide research confirms that breathing oxygen under pressure forces the oxygen to reach those tissues and body systems affected by injury, infection, or disease and accelerates the body’s healing process. • Oxygen is vital for health, it is the single most important element your body needs.• Oxygen is our primary source of energy.• Not only does oxygen fuel the body, it supports the immune system by destroying toxic substances.• Anaerobic bacteria, fungi and viruses all have a common intolerance for oxygen; they cannot survive in an oxygen rich environment.• The body’s vital functions are enhanced by increased availability of oxygen. • Increased pressure also stimulates blood flow and decreases inflammation, and has a calming effect.• Sleep is enhanced.• Absorption of nutrients and digestion improved.• At the cellular level, oxygen is required for proper function. Oxygen Therapy Before and After SurgeryMild hyperbaric oxygen therapy prior to surgery increases the body’s ability to respond to the trauma of surgery and fight off the infection-causing agents that can quickly proliferate in a wound. Smokers who plan to have cosmetic surgery are advised to quit at least four weeks prior to undergoing a procedure because the toxic qualities of tobacco smoke impede the healing process. Mild hyperbaric therapy before surgery floods the body with oxygen to help the body eliminate carbon monoxide and other harmful gases introduced by tobacco smoke.Hyperbaric therapy after surgery increases the availability of oxygen to damaged tissues and cells, speeding healing times, and greatly reducing the chance of infection. Enhanced delivery of oxygen to the surgical site allows the body to regenerate cells quickly, which reduces scarring and improves the appearance of a cosmetic procedure’s final result. MARATHON TRAINING CHECK-UP
By Gene Ulishney, BS HPE, LMT, CPED, BOCPEDYou found a good coach and began training for your marathon or half marathon a few months ago. Your train-ing is beginning to peak. Hopefully you are not having any persistent pain which could be detrimental to reach-ing your goal. But if you are now is the time to address it. From past articles you know I believe that running pain is not normal and can be eliminated the majority of the time by a change or addition to your equipment – shoes, socks, foot supports and sports nutrition.
When it comes to running pain, your first line of defense are your running shoes. If you have any pain, don’t chalk it up to something you must endure. Chances are there is a better running shoe out there for you. Go back to your running store with your current shoes to have them evaluated, and you, reevaluated. The best running stores can discuss your pain(s) and other issues such as blisters, numbness, joint pain, etc., and then make a more educated recommendation based on your shoe wear and problem areas. To help keep you from becoming injured, (something that requires you to stop running), all aches and pains during and after your run should be mentioned. While being fitted with your new shoes, ask your sales person why he or she thinks they would be a better choice. Running shoes that are matched to you will give untold numbers of pain-free and “run happy” miles.
Especially if you are having foot issues such as pain anywhere on the bottoms or sides of your feet or if they are excessively wet, consider a more comfortable, padded sock. I don’t know why running and thin socks became synonymous, but it’s contrary to common sense. I would consider thin socks basically a foot covering, lacking in breathability (because they are so tightly knit), lacking in comfort, lacking in cushioning as well as not doing much to enhance the fit inside the shoe. A padded sock, on the other hand, is not so tightly knit so it breathes much better, has more surface area to move more moisture, protects the foot from impact forces, pressures, and blisters, is more comfortable, acts like a gasket to improve the fit of the shoe, and lasts much longer. Regarding blisters, I’ve found that they are mostly caused by the shoe’s shape not matching the foot’s shape. A more ap-propriately fitting shoe should help eliminate blistering.
The ever important over-the-counter orthotic foot support – something I recommend to everyone for both perfor-mance and injury prevention, is the final consideration for a perfect fit. The very pliable mesh upper of a shoe gives a custom fit to the top and sides of the foot, but the flat two-dimensional inside bottom of the shoe does not match the three-dimensional bottom of the foot. A foot support possesses the shape that is the final link in a most custom and protective fit, enhancing balance and performance while reducing fatigue and injury. Of extreme importance, be sure to have your sports nutrition needs planned out. If not your body may fail you. To properly function, fluids, carbohydrate stores and electrolytes must be replaced regularly throughout your long runs. Your coach will help with this. But, as a general rule, begin drinking fluids with electrolytes (espe-cially salt) before you are thirsty and take a gel every 45 minutes or so to maintain energy and muscle glycogen stores. If you don’t like the consistency of gels, try chewables, like CHOMPS. And if you sweat a lot and have a tendency to cramp towards the end of your race, take along some extra electrolyte capsules. One or so an hour will help. To maintain healthy performance you must replace what your body is using up...and, plain water is not enough.
Your running store is a great resource and can help keep you injury free and get you comfortably through your next marathon or half-marathon. Have fun!

ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SCENIC 5K & 10K RACE COURSES IN FLORIDA ABOUT THE ROBINSON PRESERVEWilliam Robinson and his son Parks Robinson owners of Fit2Run donated 6.4 million dollars worth of land, and the Manatee County purchased the rest to create this 637 acre preserve. There are 6 miles of kayak and canoeing trails, 12 acres of open water, 56 acres of marshland, 20 acres of uplands, 2 docks, a 500 foot long boardwalk, 6 bridges, 10 miles of coastal, 7 miles of shell walking/jogging trails, 2 miles of paved trails, fishing piers, bird observation locations, even a 56 foot observation tower.
