On November 10, 2016,SPIN and Comcast Corporation held an unveiling ceremony to celebrate the opening of the new Comcast NBCUniversal Digital Literacy Lab at SPIN’s Norcom Community Center. To make this initiative possible, SPIN received a $20,000 grant from Comcast and a $3000 donation from the Gwynedd

Mercy University - Special Education Club 5K Run/Walk in memory of Alex Valeno.

The new Comcast Digital Literacy Lab offers 20 computers and five tablets with a variety of assistive software and hardware. For individuals with more intensive communication support needs, the lab provides eye-controlled devices that allow them to operate tablets and generate messages with the natural movement of their eyes. Combined with the ongoing support of communication and employment specialists, these technologies will empower more than 300

teens and adults with disability to reach their goals of meaningful employment and greater independence.

The Comcast grant will also support SPIN’s Disability Digital Literacy Expo. Scheduled for the Spring of 2017, the expo will convene over 200 teachers, employers, people with disabilities and their families to explore technologies for

augmented/alternative communication (AAC), independent living, employment, social media self-advocacy, and several other areas. SPIN will also promote Comcast’s Internet Essentials Program, the nation’s largest and most comprehensive high-speed Internet adoption program for low-income Americans, to families in the community to ensure that all children have access to affordable, high-speed internet to support learning and literacy at home.

Holly Jolly Christmas

Chris Feltwell and Cristin Durkin went on a bus trip to Lancaster with the Special Olympics athletes to see the Holly Jolly Christmas show. There was dancing and singing to Christmas songs. Cristin’s favorite was Jingle Bells and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and seeing Santa Claus. Chris liked the Santa dressed up like Elvis who sang Blue Christmas and Silent Night. Chris said they had so much food! It was like a Thanksgiving feast!

Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve

Bobby Effrig likes the live music on Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve. Bobby says he has a lot of good memories of Dick Clark, but Ryan Seacrest does a good job. The show will be on ABC, starting at 8:00pm. This year, they will also have live TV coverage from New Orleans. We will watch the New Year’s countdown in New Orleans, then again watch the ball drop in New York City with Ryan Seacrest. Bobby loves Gloria Estefan, Mariah Carey, and DNCE, the band with Joe Jonas, who will be performing live from New York. Chris Feltwell can’t wait to see Thomas Rhett, the country music star. Aniah Williams, Nick Colletta, and Brian Banner love Mariah Carey. Lionel Richie will be the first artist to perform following the midnight countdown in NY, and will sing “All Night Long” live from the stage of his New Year’s Eve concert in Las Vegas. There will also be a party in L.A. hosted by Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas, starring John Legend, Flo Rida, Fifth Harmony, and other pop acts.

Remembering Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King was a good man. He helped people. He tried to change laws so that everybody was treated the same. -Moira Regan Martin Luther King won the Nobel Prize. He wanted everyone to be free. It doesn’t matter what skin you have. He wanted everyone to be happy. When Rosa Parks wouldn’t give up her seat, Martin Luther King fought for her rights. -Carlin Sparks Martin Luther King led people on peaceful marches to change laws too make everybody be treated the same. -Christian Lopez
