PARISH NEWSAND NOTES
In the first frame, Snoopy looks quizzically at one of his little bird friends andasks, It is New Years Eve already? In the next picture his eyes narrow toslits and he gasps, I cant believe it! In the third square Snoopy turns hisback to his friend and forlornly thinks to himself My life is going too fast. In
the final frame he is lying on his back atop the doghouse with the little birdperched on his feet and Snoopy says, My only hope is that we go into overtime.
As Bill Cosby laments, time flies! The realities of our mortality, the fact thatthis is not our abiding home, that our bodies are frail and fragile are truths thatour old texts never tire of pressing upon us:
Our days are like the grass; we flourish like a flower of the field; When the wind goes over it, it is gone, and its place shall know it no more.(Psalm 103: 15-16, BCP 734)
Perhaps you were like me when younger and didnt believe this, thinkingyourself indestructible singing those lyrics from Fame: Im gonna live forever....Now older, when we deny brevity of body-boundness, as Ive learned to do,
we miss some of lifes best gifts. A sociologists study asked fifty people overthe age of ninety-five one question: If you could live your life over again, whatwould you do differently? Three answers dominated the results: (1) I wouldreflect more; (2) I would risk more; (3) I would do more things that would liveon after I am gone. The press of time passing can lead to decisive living, lifewith less drift or devotion to trivia and delay.
But we live in a culture which discourages intentional living with itssmorgasbord of diversions and plethora of options; this can lead to confusionand immobility. Too many New Years resolutions sound to me like sportscasterHarry Kalas introduction of Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Gary Maddox: Garyhas turned his life around. He used to be depressed and miserable; now hesmiserable and depressed.
Real life, life of vitality and purpose, life by the will of God comes only as webecome intentional about what is essential to us. Another pastor, John Maxwell, declares, You cannot overestimate the unimportance of practically everything. We should stick that on our bathroom mirror! Intentional decisions about whatis and what is not important give our lives power and direction, and enables usto make contributions.

SAINT MICHAELS FINANCIALUPDATE FOR NOVEMBER 2012:
THOUGHTS
FOR THIS LIFE
Again and again, when the
people of God are in trouble anddistress, tears flow. So it was inthe time of Rachel, the motherof the people of Israel, whosegrave lies near to Bethlehem,Rachel weeping for all herchildren. It was in the last daysof Jerusalem before it fell to theBabylonians, when the prophetJeremiah looked down upon thetragedy and wept....A voice isheard in Ramah, mourning andgreat weeping, Rachel weepingfor her children and refusing to
be comforted, because herchildren are no more.
(Jeremiah 31:15)

2013 LENTEN SERIES
THOMAS CRANMER OF CANTERBURY
A PLAY BY CHARLES WILLIAMS
by Louise Stover
I
n celebrating the 350th anniversary of our Book of
Common Prayer this year, Saint Michael & All Angels2013 Lenten Series presents playwright Charles Williams'Thomas Cranmer of Canterbury.
Charles Williams (1886-1945) was a prolific writer ofprose, poetry, and plays. His greatest admirer was probablyC. S. Lewis, whose novel That Hideous Strength was atthe time regarded as entirely inspired by Williams's novels.Thomas Cranmer of Canterbury was commissioned forthe Canterbury Festival and was presented at CanterburyCathedral in 1936, the following year after T.S. Eliot'sMurder in the Cathedral.
The play dramatizes the key events in Cranmer's life.Cranmer had been a Cambridge scholar and a diplomat, before being plucked by Henry VIII to be archbishop in
1532. Over the next 30 years, Cranmer became a leaderof the English Reformation, and the first Book of CommonPrayer was published in 1549. After Mary I became queenin 1553, she restored Roman Catholic worship to England.Cranmer was tried for treason and heresy. He was executedby fire in 1556.
In Williams' play, the two main characters are Cranmerand a skeleton. The skeleton figure apparently representingEvil or Death ultimately appears, in the light of eternity, asthe instrument of Good.
A portion of the play will be be presented each week. The series runs every Wednesday throughout Lent with asoup supper at 6pm and our program beginning at 6:30pm.All programs will close with Compline, finishing by 8pm.
Real life, agonies and joys and all, is the intensive life, theinvesting life, the giving life.
I love George Bernard Shaw here:This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose
recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughlyworn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being
a force of Nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod ofailments and grievances, complaining that the world willnot devote itself to making you happy.
Faith, hope and love do abide, as does everything thatcontributes to them in our lives and world.
Jesus prioritized those dimensions of life which deathcannot destroy: development of character, growth of deeprelationships; contribution to the eternal well-being of others.Life intentional and intensive and infinite. Seeing we aresurrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us runwith patience the race set before us, looking to the author
and finisher of our faith, God in Christ.
Al Ahli Hospital to continue work
in spite of budget cuts, recent violence
Episcopal News, Los Angeles -- The Diocese ofJerusalem has announced that Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gazawill remain open in spite of severe cuts to its funding andthe recent fighting between Hamas forces and those ofIsrael, according to American Friends of the EpiscopalDiocese of Jerusalem.
The violence was halted by a Nov. 21 cease-fireagreement. The hospital, founded in 1902 by the AnglicanChurch, is working around the clock and is filled tooverflowing despite limited electricity and supplies, saidAFEDJ executive director Anne Lynn.
The Diocese of Jerusalem commissioned an analysis from
PriceWaterhouse Coopers that outlines a new businessmodel for the hospital since the United Nations Relief andWorks Agency (UNWRA) announced that it will not renewa $1.5 million grant to the hospital after 2012.
Al Ahli Hospital continues to depend on donations fromEpiscopalians and Anglicans throughout the world.Members of the Diocese of Los Angeles, which shares acompanion relationship with the Diocese of Jerusalem, recently raised $40,000 for the hospital and its work.Additional donations may be sent to the Diocese of LosAngeles ("Al Ahli Hospital" in the memo line) at 840 EchoPark Avenue, Los Angeles 90026.NOTE: The proceeds from lunch at the AlternativeMarket will be sent to Al Ahli Arab Hospital.
Charles Williams worked nearly all his life for the Oxford UniversityPress, also lecturing extensively on English literature for eveninginstitutes and latterly for Oxford University. Much of his critical writinggrew out of this activity. His seven novels appeared from 1930 onwards;unlike much fantasy fiction, they deal not with imaginary magicalworlds but with the eruption of supernatural elements into everydaylife. A legal officer has bequeathed to him the original set of Tarotcards; the investigation of a murder in a publishers office merges withthe rediscovery of the Holy Grail; the ghost of a girl killed in anaccident helps thwart a plot for world domination
His later poetry, which he considered his main work, included anumber of striking plays (Thomas Cranmer of Canterbury was thenext Canterbury Festival commission after Eliots Murder in theCathedral) and two volumes of poems on themes connected with theArthurian cycle.
He was perhaps the most original lay theologian of the century (hischief books in this field being The Descent of the Dove, a history ofthe Holy Spirit in the Church(1939), and He Came Down FromHeaven(1938)). Above all, he was passionately interested in the waysin which romantic love can be a key to understanding our relationshipwith God. This vision blended with his critical work in his great studyof Dante, The Figure of Beatrice (1943), which inspired Dorothy L.Sayers to translate the Divine Comedy into English.

Christian Education 2013
By Susan Caldwell
Education begins when one persontakes the time to share what theyhave learned. At the Los AngelesDiocesan Convention, BishopSuffragan Mary Glasspool reflectedon a novel by Willa Cather. As I satthere at the luncheon table listeningto the presentation made by those inleadership, I was taken by the truthof Bishop Glasspool's reference,"Where there is great love, there arealways miracles." I appreciated thebishops investment in reading goodliterature and her willingness to sharewhat she had learned. We can't bepresent everywhere at all times, butthose who educate bring us on newpaths and on new journeys. In 2013,I will be reading other works by WillaCather than the ones I read in college.
In what ways have you beeninspired recently? Is there a particularage group that God has placed onyour heart to pray for and or supportthrough teaching?
Christian Education is one way offulfilling the Great Commission. As
Jesus said before his Ascension, "Allauthority in heaven and on earth hasbeen given to me. Therefore go andmake disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of theFather and of the Son and of the HolySpirit, and teaching them to obeyeverything I have commanded you.And surely I am with you always, tothe end of age." Matthew 28:18-20.
Jesus is always present in ourefforts of going forward in HisName, teaching and equipping thosewho are new to the faith.
In 2013, I would like to invite youto consider being a part of SaintMichael and All Angels AdultChristian Education event andprogram planning. Worship andChristian Education are high prioritiesand sharing new inspiration takesparticipation. At present, we havechildren and adult Sunday school,

AGNES OF ROME(c.291-c.304)
Virgin Martyr
Agnes (depicted in art as a lamb)is venerated as a Saint in theRoman Catholic Church, the EasternOrthodox Church, the AnglicanCommunion and Lutheranism. She isthe Patron Saint of betrothed couples, chastity, Children of Mary, crops, gardeners, Girl Guides, girls, rapevictims and virgins.
According to tradition, Saint Agneswas a member of the Roman nobilityand raised in a Christian family. Shesuffered martyrdom at age twelve orthirteen during the persecution of thereign of the Emperor Diocletion inJanuary 301 because, true to her faithshe refused to marry the son of thePrefect Sempronius that required herto worship the Roman gods.Outraged, Sempronius condemned her,a virgin, to death, which was forbiddenunder Roman law. After being subjectto blandishments, followed by brutaland humiliating tortures, Agnes stillrefused to renounce her faith. She wasthen brought to trial before anotherRoman officer who condemned her to
death. Her death at the stake proved tobe an especially painful one. An earlyaccount of Agnes' death, stressing hersteadfastness and virginity, is given bySaint Ambrose.
A few days after Agnes' death, herfoster-sister, Emerentiana, was foundpraying by her tomb. After refusing toleave the place and reprimanding thepagans for killing her foster-sister, shewas stoned to death. Emeretiana waslater also canonized. The daughter ofConstantine, Constance, was reportedto have been cured of leprosy after
praying at Agnes' tomb. She, too waslater canonized. Emerentiana andConstance appear in the scenes fromthe life of Agnes on the 14th-centuryRoyal Gold Cup in the British Museum.
Agnes' bones are conserved beneaththe high altar in the church ofSant'Agnes fuori le mura in Rome, which was built over the catacomb thathoused Agnes' tomb. Her skull ispreserved in a separate chapel inRome's Piazza Navona. In the AnglicanCommunion Saint Agnes' Feast Day isJanuary 21.
[Episcopal News Service] On theevening of Dec. 4, a certain anonymousEpiscopalian in a certain undiscloseddiocese in the continental United Stateswas surfing on her iPhone while
watching the movie Bridesmaids ontelevision when she saw a Facebookfriend had liked a compliments pageat his college. Curious, she clickedthrough to the site.
What I found was just anonymouscompliments by students at his college. And they were so earnest and heartfeltand genuinely kind, she said. I thought,Gosh, if college students can do this, maybe Advents a good time for[members of] the Episcopal Church totake some time and have an opportunityto be kind to one another.
And lo, the Episcopal ComplimentsFacebook Page was born.
The page was quiet for the first dayand a half. I came back from a meetingat noon Thursday, and suddenly thingswere happening, recounted Ms.Episcopal Compliments, EC for short.By Dec. 10, 130 people had liked thepage only 12 of them Facebookfriends of EC and the page hadreached more than 3,400 people.
I think its remarkable, she said. Thefact that so many people had interactedwith the page without becomingfriends of it really speaks to the wholequality of the Web in that one connectionleads to many other connections.
For the most part, posters arenthighlighting the Episcopal Churchsmost visible leaders. There are youthleaders and deacons and altar guild ladiesand Sunday school teachers getting thecompliments, EC said. It feels like itsreally grassroots.
And the comments come from acrossthe country Virginia, Indiana, NewYork, Texas, Michigan.
A Dec. 7 compliment acknowledgesPeter, a third-grader from Saint JamesChurch in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, whosold hot chocolate at a roadside standand raised $650 to buy food for ahomeless shelter.
Another poster offered thanks andblessings for the terrific job and devotionthat the coffee hour folks do for ourGrace Church [in] Chanute, Kansas.
On Dec. 9, EC was delighted todiscover two people from the samecongregation complimenting each otherabout something that occurred in their
Its Complimentary
South Dakota church that day. One iscomplimenting a deacon who had childrenup at the altar. And then that deacon iscomplimenting the people in thecongregation and the kids with being willing
to go with a sort of ad-hoc situation. That makes me happy, EC said. These
are just simple people just doing the normalwork of the church. Its people who arevolunteering, its people who have made adifference in individuals lives Thatswhere the grace and the life of the churchis. Its right at the local level. And so, eventhough I dont even know any of thesepeople, I take great delight in hearing just asentence or two about their ministry.
EC has kept her identity hidden becauseshe believes that helps maintain the pagesgrassroots nature, she said. Obviously Idont believe in anonymity when it comesto criticizing.
But in this case, its a plus that ananonymous person, not an official EpiscopalChurch entity, is sponsoring the page, shesaid. Its just one Episcopalian who said,Hey, this is a good idea. What it means isthat people can own it for themselves. Itsnot tied to any official view of evangelismor anything. Theres nothing behind it, otherthan providing a channel.
Anonymity seems to serve thecomplimenters well, also. EC moderates thesubmissions, but I havent seen anything that would cause me to question thesincerity of someone. I think its a genuinelythoughtful group of people out there.
Several years ago, she recalled, sheadopted as her Lenten discipline sending ane-mail or handwritten note to someoneabout something she appreciated each day.The positive responses she received evensix or eight months later were amazing, she said.
Theres a little bit of that to EpiscopalCompliments, just taking the moment whenyou think a nice thing or you want to
compliment somebody on something theydo well or something youve observedthem do that youve found to be kind, to
just try to take a moment and let them know.I think as of Dec. 25 well put it away
until next year, EC said. Im not going toshut the page down, but Im going to kindof go underground until maybe next Advent.I see myself as being the cutting and pastingfingers of Jesus here. Were sent out to behis hands and feet. This is just a little waythat I can be the fingers.

"Where there is great love, there arealways miracles." I think that whenwe invest ourselves in the lives ofothers, sharing our traditions, ourhopes and dreams, there is charity, agape and phileo. And from the voiceof Willa Cather's character Jean MarieLatour, a French Catholic priest livingin New Mexico, an abundance of lovebrings supernatural surprises. Miraclesmind you!
So please gather around the sign-uptables to participate and share in thevision of Christian Education at SaintMichael and All Angels.

Do you wait until the fall season tobegin thinking about stewardship and
your yearly pledge? A helpful andrewarding approach might be to begin inJanuary to examine what yourcommitment is to God and Saint Michael's.The pamphlet "Stewardship: A Responseto Love" poses questions that help usunderstand what stewardship means."Stewardship is no longer just anotherword for money in church. Stewardshipis nothing less than our complete lifestyle. It is a total response and accountabilitybefore our Lord . . Stewardship is whatwe do after we say, 'I believe."www.forward movement.com.

THE OLD YEAR
NOW HATH PASSED AWAY
On Epiphany I will play,
as a prelude to the 10:00
A.M. liturgy, a chorale
prelude by J. S. Bach
entitled Das alte Jahr
vergangen ist. It is from a
collection of chorale
preludes Bach wrote
entitled the Orgelbchlein(the little organ book). Im
including the text here.
The old year now hath passed away;
We thank Thee, O our God, today
That Thou hast kept us through the year
When danger and distress were near.
We pray Thee, O eternal Son,
Who with the Father reignst as One,
To guard and rule Thy Christendom
Through all the ages yet to come.
Take not Thy saving Word away,
Our souls true comfort, staff, and stay.
Abide with us and keep us free
From errors, following only Thee.
Oh, help us to forsake all sin,
A new and holier course begin!
Mark not what once was done amiss;
A happier, better year be this,
Wherein as Christians we may live
Or die in peace that Thou canst give,To rise again when Thou shalt come
And enter Thine eternal home.
There shall we thank Thee and adore
With all the angels evermore.
Lord Jesus Christ, increase our faith
To praise Thy name through life and death.
Happy New Year!!
