Read to Succeed Distributes books in Sacramento Hello, my name is Samuel Patton and I am the founder of a book donation

program called Read to Succeed. Read to Succeed collects new and used

children's books and distributes them to various organizations. On

December 9th, I had the chance to participate in an event called Winter

Wonderland that is put on by the Sacramento River Cats baseball team. The

event is held at Raley Field in Sacramento and brings around 1000 needy

families who receive a present, play games, eat dinner, and get a book from

Read to Succeed. This year the event was a great success with lots of

children in attendance. Read to Succeed gave away over 1600 books at

Winter Wonderland. I would like to thank all the people who have been

generous to donate books over the years. I would also like to thank the

students of West Campus High School of Sacramento for their help in

distributing books this year.

PRESENTATION DAY—Chicago Park 4-H Club Hosts February 11, 2011 Bitney Charter High School

4-H Members: Now is the time to start planning for Presentation Day. As you participate in projects, you collect information and ideas that can be shared with others. This sharing of information is part of the process of learning. Choose the style that best fits

you for your first presentation and then try other styles as you advance in 4-H. Giving presentations helps develop many life skills including the ability to speak in front of a group, organizing ideas, and creating and using graphics to support the spoken word. Speakers prepare for presentations by giving talks to project groups and community club meetings, practicing skills learned in a project, and observing other people giving presentations. You can get ideas for presentations from many different sources. The first place to start is with your project leaders. They know what you have learned in your project and what you might enjoy presenting. Your community club leader also can be a source of ideas. Your local librarian can help you develop your subject through research. Sources for presentation ideas are project manuals, books, magazines, and brochures from various organizations. The Nevada County 4-H Presentation Day policies and procedures are available on the 4-H website at http://groups.ucanr.org/uccenevada4h/4-H_Events_and_Activities/Presentation_Day.htm or you may request a copy at the 4-H office. The registration form will be available in December.

Show what you’ve learned; give a presentation!

I will then be calling the Adult Coordinators of each project and set up interviews the first week of February. I will announce the Jr. Coordinators at the Council meeting in February and also post it in the Greensheet. I will be having a couple of meetings after everyone is in place, so that we can get to know each other and the Adult Coordinators as well. Please remember that this is a youth run program. We will also be bringing updates to the council monthly. If you have any questions regarding this please feel free to contact me at 273-6625. I would also like to mention that Brandy Fisher has once again agreed to be my mentor and the Adult County Coordinator Supervisor. In November, the Meadowlarks beef group went on a field trip to Longhorn Meats in Auburn . We saw and learned about all the cuts of beef. We also learned about the grades of beef such as, select, choice, and prime. Around 12 people attended and we learned a lot. The Meadowlarks beef group also had a busy De-cember . We had a barn party with a fun gift exchange and a great dinner with beef dishes brought by every-one. Our group brought food items and small gifts for a foster family of five. We made a nice gift basket and stockings for them. It has been a good start to the group so far, and a special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Prechter, our beef leaders.

Tips and Tricks for a Secretary By Emma Durham

Have you ever felt confused and overwhelmed at the job you have to do? You know you can’t back out and you don’t exactly know how to delve in. This is how you can feel while beginning the job of secretary. But there is some good news. It doesn’t have to be that way! With some practice and common sense, you can make it. I have had two years of secretary experience and am here to answer any questions that you may have.

The first thing you need to do when preparing to take the minutes of the upcoming meeting is grab an agenda. Then, on another piece of paper write the corresponding numbers from each agenda item on that paper. This helps a lot because as things are mentioned, you don’t have to write anything down unless they are expanded upon during the meeting. Secondly, write out the minutes directly after the meeting. This way all of the information will be fresh in your mind and will be better to recall if your notes don’t make sense. Fur-thermore, whether or not you are required to read the minutes out loud to the club, it is ALWAYS beneficial to read what you have written BEFORE the public has a chance to view it. This will avoid any mistakes you might have made and help you become more familiar with what you have written. And lastly, read correspon-dence beforehand. This is important as sometimes hand written notes are hard to decipher. This will prevent the sender from feeling embarrassed because you are unable to read what they have written, and you will feel confident reading it as well. I hope that this has helped you in your secretary journey. It may be hard at first, but think about how all of the bookkeeping and writing can benefit your club and your career later on in life. ~Sincerely Emma
