Great Family Magazine

Wow! That’s all I have to say aboutSalaam Namaste. I rarely pick up the

Ienjoyed reading the extensive coverage oflocalcommunityeventsandmykidsenjoyedthe puzzles in the Kids Corner. I will startpickingup themagazine regularly fromnowon.

ComingbacktoKashmiraShah,Iwonderwhy you took so long to feature her. Is itbecause she’s known forher sexydances? I

Disappointing Movie

Iread your article titled ‘Rab Ne Bana DiMovie’withgreatinterest(Salaam Namaste,

December 08) and based on the positivecomments in the article I went with myentire family to watch the Shah Rukh KhanFlick.Iamsorrytosaythatthiswasonegreatdisappointment for the entire family. Exceptfor hummable music and great photography, themovieofferednothingofvalue.

I earnestly urge you to consider givingunbiasedopinionswhenyouwriteaboutbigmoviesfeaturingmegastarsinfuture.Thiswillsaveusalotoftimeandmoneyandenhancetheimageofyourmagazinetoo.

Ibrahim KaziLewsiville

The movie RabNeBanaDi Jodi is a total entertainer and has been doing successfully both in India and the US. Shah Rukh Khan movies are all about glamour and entertainment and this one is no different. Our opinion of the movie is that it’s screenplay and music were great, an assertion you agreed with.

Talking about paisa, money, the only power, pleasure and pressure that matters today,

reminds me of some true stories where some of the greatest legends worked only for the love and the sheer worship of their work.

There was a time when the struggling comedian Jagdeep had no money to keep his family from starvation. He thought of the only man who could help him. He walked all the way from the suburbs of Bombay to the other end of the city where Asif lived. Little did Jagdeep know that Asif himself was broke andinaverybadstatefinancially.Therewerejust a few rupees left in the house. The female members of Asif ’s family made all kinds of gestures to make him say no to Jagdeep. But Asif had a heart that could break and even melt over sad stories. He talked very little, went straight up to the cupboard, took out all the money that was there and handed it all over to Jagdeep. He knew that Jagdeep’s need was greater than his and he could make it good within some days but Jagdeep couldn’t. Jagdeep cried that evening like he had never before. Farishte bhi hote hain insaan ke roop mein,Jagdeeprealizedthatday…

Another Asif story. The late Sanjeev Kumar and Asif were very good friends. They had even started work on Love And God planned as a greater magnum opus than

Mughal-E-Azam. The two friends were once driving down somewhere in Juhu, which then was barren land and being grabbed by some of theverybig starsandfilmmakers atdirtcheap prices. Sanjeev asked Asif to buy a plot, and build a sheesh mahal of his own. Asif looked at Sanjeev, had a deep puff at his cigarette, flicked off the ash and said,“Haribhai, hum yahan film banbe aaye hai, bangle banane aur paise kamane nahin”.ThemakerofMughal-E-Azamlivedinatwobedroomflattillthelastdays of his life which speaks volumes for his passion for work.

And now a tidbit about the greatest Indian actor,DilipKumar:Hestillcallshimself“thepoorest actor in the country when compared to someof the junior actorsof today”.Heasked his producers for money only when he badly needed money and it was normally just a few thousand rupees each time. He says he couldn’t think of lakhs and huge amounts which other stars and actors asked for and got. He, like his contemporary, Raaj Kumar, got all his costumes cut by his own personal tailors because he found them much more cheap than the stylish costume designers of the industry which was his way of helping his producers in saving money…

Here is a tale about Dev Anand and Lata Mangeshkar. Lata was to record a song for

one of Dev’s films. She sang to perfectionlike she has always sung and specially when shehassungforamanlikeDevAnand,“thekindofmentheydon’tmakeanymore”.Devhad kept a cheque ready for her. But Lata just finished recording her song, ran down thesteps, got into her car and sped away. Dev was out of his wits when he heard of what happened. He literally ran down the stairs and then ran after her car. It was drama at its most dramatic with Dev running after Lata’s carandthetwofinallystopping.Heofferedher the cheque but Lata just folded her hands and refused to accept it. On the contrary, she folded her hands again and thanked Dev for giving her the umpteenth opportunity to sing forafilmmadebyhimevenafterfifty longyears. Dev just hugged her, blessed her and threw up his hands in disbelief. Lata then said she would just accept a one rupee coin from him for her song. Dev was helpless. He didn’t have one rupee coin on him. He sent for one immediately, offered it to Lata who gratefully accepted it, smiled her best smile, waved out to Dev and drove away…

Ek unka bhi zamaana tha jab paisa sab kuch nahi hota tha

Ek aaj ka zamaana hai jab paisa hi kaagaz ka khuda ban gaya hai

YEH PAISA AISA KAISA HAI?

Coronary Heart disease (CAD) remainsthenumberonekilleraroundtheworld.

People from Indian subcontinent are at 3-4timeshigherrisk fordevelopingCADwhencompared to other populations. Amongpeople from Indian subcontinent, thosewhohavethehistoryofdiabetes, highbloodpressure, highcholesterol, andfamilyhistoryofCADaretheonesparticularlyatrisk.

The global medical community is yet toarriveataconsensusasfarastherightagetostartscreeningforheartdisease.However,inmyopinion,people50andaboveshouldhaveastresstest.Itdoesnotmeanthatyoucannothavestresstestearlier.Yourphysicianwillbethebestjudgetodecidewhenapersonneedsastresstest.

Iwouldrecommend,peoplehaveastresstestatage50andthenevery3-5yearsiftheinitial testwasnormal, providedyoudonothave any new symptoms in between. If youdevelopachestpainorshortnessofbreathafterwithinayearofnormalstresstestyouwillhavetoundergothetestagain.TheStresstestisanindirectmeansofdeterminingifapatienthascoronaryarterydisease.Itisalsousedasatestforriskstratificationafterpeoplehavesuffered heart attacks and also to monitorpeoplewho have have established coronary

arterydisease.

Therearenumerousways of administering

a stress test.The most

c o m m o n

one is the exercise stresstest. It involves walking on atreadmill or riding a exercisebicycle. During the test, there iscontinuous monitoring of yourelectrocardiogram (ECG), heartrate, and blood pressure. It isa very safe test. The chance ofhaving any complications duringthe test is 1 in 25,000. Duringthe test if a person feels anychestpain, dizzinessorshortnessofbreathyouneedtonotifythedoctor or nurse immediately. At this juncture, the concernedhealthcareworkerwilltakestepseither to stop the test or slowdown the treadmill. For peoplewho cannot walk on treadmills the doctormight recommend chemical stress test inwhichchemicalsareinjectedintothebodytosimulateexercise.

The stress tests are not 100 percentaccurate. The regular exercise stress test isonly 60 percent accurate. The remaining 40percent can be falsely negative or positive.Your doctor might add imaging to theexerciseorchemicalstresstest.Imagingmayinclude either echocardiogram (Ultrasound)or nuclear (Thallium) imaging. One of themainreasons, theyaddimagingistoimprovethe accuracy of the test. By adding imaging, the testaccuracygoesup to85-90percent,leavingonlya10-15percentmarginoferror.I feel that the benefits of a stress test faroutweighitsrisks.

There are new and evolvingtechnologies that will play a

prominentroleinscreeningforCAD.Thecoronarycomputed

tomographic (also knownas CT or CAT scan)angiography is one suchmodality.Itisuseful, howeverit isstillnotconsideredasa reliable screening tool. The disadvantage withCT angiography is that itinvolves lot of radiation(X-Rays).For instanceonecoronary CT angiographyprovides the amount ofradiationthatisequivalentto 500 chest X-Rays.

The other upcoming modality is Magneticresonancecoronaryangiography(alsoknownasMRI)which is still considered a researchtooldespitebeingaverypromisingtechnique.MRI’s main drawbacks are high cost and itconsumeslotoftime.

Summing up, I would like to say thatscreening for CAD is a very good methodtopreventtheonsetofheartdisease.Thereare new and more reliable techniques witha promise to change the future of CADscreeningwithinthenextfewyears.

Chandni Chowk To China, the first ever Bollywood Kung-Fu comedy takes you on a madcap journey

from the by-lanes of Chandni Chowk in Delhi to Shanghai, the Great Wall, and rural China, marrying in its wake hilarious gags, breathtaking action, spectacular locations, and heart-stirring emotions.

Our protagonist Sidhu (Akshay Kumar- Singh is Kinng, Waqt) is the lowest on the totem pole, cutting vegetables at a roadside food stall in Chandni Chowk, Delhi. He longs to escape his dreary existence and looks for shortcuts- with astrologers, tarot readers and fake fakirs — believing in anything except himself, despite his father figure Dada’s (Mithun Chakraborty — Lucky, Heroes) best efforts. His redeeming moment arrives when two strangers, claiming he’s a reincarnation of a war hero from the past, take him to China for a life of luxury. Sidhu now dreams of wine, women, and a princely existence in foreign lands. Thanks to the devious translator, a conman by the name Chopstick (Ranvir Shorey- Ugly aur Pagli), little does he know that he is being taken to the Promised Land to rid the Chinese village of the vicious smuggler Hojo (Gordon Liu- Kill Bill Vol. 2)!

Therefore, Sidhu blissfully sets forth to China with Chopstick who instigates dreams of a delicious future and conveniently forgets to reveal the perils that await him. Along the way, he meets Sakhi (Deepika Padukone- Om Shanti Om, Bachna Ae Haseeno), who has embarked on a journey to pay homage to the land of her birth and her dead father and twin. Initially Sidhu, through a series of lucky coincidences, manages to sidestep being beaten by Hojo’s men but finally Hojo catches up with him and exposes him as the country buffoon that he really is. Sidhu has the fire of revenge in his belly and finds the one man who will make him a Kung-Fu expert and set the village free. Armed with his Sifu (master), faith in himself, and the love of the fair Sakhi, Sidhu sets forth to conquer all!

The film was supposed to be titled Mera Naam Chin Chin Choo or Made in China, but somehow ended up with the more apt title it has now. Written by Sridhar Raghavan of Khakee (2004) and Bluffmaster (2005) fame, Chandni Chowk to China is somewhat like the story of Akshay Kumar’s life. In fact, the star himself agreed that about 50 percent of the film is based on his own experiences.

For the first time, South Indian beauty Deepika Padukone will be essaying a double role: as a Chinese Woman and an Indian Woman. Chinese superstar Gordon Liu is making his Bollywood debut in this movie and promises loads of Kung-Fu action!

That makes it all the more watchable for Akki’s fans. Watch in stadium-style seating @ Hollywood Theaters on January 16, 2009.

One of the biggest gripes voiced byour community is the lackof status.

Inside the cavesit was like a furnace, despite the fresh airsuppliedbyblowers installedby theAndhraPradeshTourism Development Corporation(APTDC). But soon the excitement andbeauty of the caves took our minds awayfrom the heat and discomfort, and insteadgot us involved in admiring the well-lit andneatly maintainedpassages embellished with

fountains and strategically placed lighting. The lighting gives the natural formations aneerie glow and makes walking through thevast subterranean passages an invigoratingexperience.

The Courtesan and the Sadhu, A novel about Maya, Dharma, and God by Satya Avatar;DharmaVisionLLC;Price:$20.95;361

One of the most difficult challengesthat every Hindu parent living in

western societies faces is how to educatetheir children about the complexities ofSanatanaDharma.Withitsmultitudesofgods, numerous texts, hundreds of sampradayas, thousands of religious gurus and numerousregional, caste, and linguistic communities,Hinduism is perhaps the most fragmentedreligionintheworld.OneofthereasonsforSanatana Dharma aka Hinduism to be suchis its open and accepting philosophy. Hencethere is not one straightforward, black andwhiteway bywhichone can explain all thetenetsofHinduismtochildren,teenagers,andyoungadults.Thisambiguityinthefaithoftenleadstofundamentalquestionsinateenager’smind.

This need to explain Hinduism to histeenaged son motivated Satya Avatar, whohails fromMysore,Karnataka (South Indian)towriteanoveldrawingheavilyuponcertainhistorical incidents in India’s history. “Morethanfouryearsago, mysoncametomeandaskedmehowwerelatedtoGodinSanatanaDharma. As I progressed in formulating ananswer tomyson’squestion, itoccurred tome that the best way to explain the basictenets of Sanatana Dharma to my teenagesonwastowriteanovelsetinancientIndiaand explain the tenets through the spiritualjourneyofthecharactersinthestory,”writesthe author who came to the United Statesin 1978 topursue graduate studies at StateUniversityofNewYorkatBuffalowherehereceivedhisPh.Din1981.Sincethenhehasworked in the high-tech industry where hehas held several technical and managementpositions in research and development, productmanagement, andmarketing.

SetinancientIndiajustafterAlexander’sinvasion, The Courtesan and the Sadhu takes

thereaderthroughthespiritualjourneyof two seekers: Kautilya and Manu. The former is a highly learned anderuditeVedic scholar, whose life takesanunexpecteddetour, andheendsupbuildingtheMauryanEmpire.Althoughsuccessful in re-establishing dharmicvalues in the Indian subcontinentand getting rid of the vestiges ofAlexander’s invasion, he continues tohaveinnerstrugglesaboutthepathhehaschosen.

Manu, theother seeker, is anelitewarrior in the Mauryan Army butendsupbecomingaseekerofTruthata young age. Disappointed in love, hetries to find answers to his spiritualquestions, first as a Buddhist monkand laterasaSadhu. Inthisstory, theauthor takes the reader through theintriguing journey of the two seekersastheyfinallyovercomeMâyatoreachMoksha(emancipation).

The book starts off with Kautilya beingasked by a Greek (Yavana) general tomodifytheVedas andperformayagna (vedicceremony) topraisehis accomplishments.Acompletely angry Kautilya decides to takematters intohishandsandseekhelpof theking of Patliputra to chase theYavanas outoftheAryaland(India).“AsKautilyaenteredPataliputra, he was surprised to see that itwasmuchlargerthanhehadimagined.Itwasawell-plannedcitywithlargeboulevardsandstately buildings. The city was bustling withcommerce, and trade. There were storesstocked with expensive and fine jewelry, clothes, and furniture. Many stores weresellingvegetables, grains, andwine.Hecouldalso see many dance halls, restaurants, andtemples,”explainstheauthorspeakingaboutKautilya’sjourney.

OneofthemostinterestingfacetsofThe Courtesan and the Sadhu of historical fictionis that apart from being an absorbing story,

the book subtly teaches the readers aboutHindu theology and scriptures. Written inthe deceptively simple style characteristicofAmerican writing SatyaAvatar effectivelycommunicatestheanger, insecurity, adventure, pains, fears, andwonderment thecharactersof the story. The author has taken pains todescribeinexactingdetailthevariousaspectsof his story andhow they relate to variousaspects of the SanatanaDharma and its all-accepting philosophy. This book would behighlyusefultoallthosepeoplewhowishtolearnaboutHinduismanditsphilosophy.

“ItisinterestingtonotethatforManuandKautilya,DharmawithoutaCreatorGodwasnotacceptable,whereasforChit-AnandaandChandra Gupta, the existence of a CreatorGodwasimmaterial.Whatmatteredtothemwas the spiritual experience in thematerialworld.ThegreatnessofpeopleofAryavartaisthattheyrespectandhonorallthesepathswithorwithout aCreatorGod,”concludesSatyaAvatar in the epilogue of his Magnum Opus.

HowdoesaBrokenboneHeal?Howdidyourbody“knowhowtomakeitself”from2Cellsto100Trillion?

Your body is well orchestrated, regulated, and highly intelligent. Thebody’s computer (Brain) sends vitalmessages to the body through the vast‘inner-network’ of wires (Nerves). When your brain and body can fullycommunicate through the nerves, your“InnateIntelligence”canmoreaccuratelycomprehend and respond to all of thephysical, chemical, andemotionalstressesyouencounterinyourlife.Thisallowsyouto better adapt to those stresses, healany injuries youmayhave, andcontinuegrowingandunfoldingintowhateveryouareultimatelymeanttobe. WhenyouhaveaclearconnectionyouHAVE:MoreEnergy, Better Digestion, More Focus,Stronger Immune System, and otherwonderful feelings that are created byhavingaproperlyfunctioningbody.

If you lose the shape, movement, oralignment of your spine (due to poordiet, injury, birth process, falls, and evenemotional stress) you actually interfere

with the communicationandconnectionfromyourbrain to yourbody’s100Trillion Cells. This stateofpartialdisconnectioniscalled being“Subluxated”(Sub-lux-ated, literally“LessLight”).

The subluxationprocess interferes withnormal communicationbetween your brain andthecellsofyourbody.Asa result, you no longerhave full expression ofyour God-given “Innateintelligence” or “LifeGiving Energy.” Thisdecreases your abilityto adapt completely tointernal and externalstresses. In turn, thebody functions at lessthan optimal levels. Thisisreferredtoasastateof“dis-ease.”

Depending on your body you mayexperience: Headaches, Allergies, WeakImmunity, Fatigue, Insomnia, Digestiveproblems, andHormonalImbalance, onewith other variations or expressions ofyour Loss of EASE and poor state ofFunction.
