I believe we are finally getting back into our routine. Last week, was an unusual week with our 2 hour delays. Due to the delays, we have had to adjust our MAP testing schedule, but otherwise we are back on track. Next week will be a short week. Monday is our Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday followed by a teacher workday on Tuesday. I hope you will enjoy your 4 day weekend. It should be a great time to plan some family fun activities. Tomorrow is the last day of the 2nd nine weeks. We are officially halfway through the school year. We have had an awesome first half of the year and I am very excited about what the second half will hold. Our PTO is again hard at work plan- ning our Winter Fest and Silent Auc- tion. Please save the date , February 21st, and plan to join us for a fun even- ing for the entire family. Remember that tonight we have an- other Dining for Dollars opportunity at El Poblano. Also, our 5th grade strings students will be performing at Cross- roads Middle at 8 pm. Students should wear black pants/skirt and white shirt/ blouse. Please arrive at 7 pm for a brief rehearsal. Se necesita ayuda (HELP WANTED!)

¡Viene… el mercado LMES!¡Viene… el mercado LMES!¡Viene… el mercado LMES!¡Viene… el mercado LMES! It’s almost here! The market begins Monday, Janu-ary 27th and runs through Friday, January 31st. During this week, when students come to their Spanish class, they will be visiting el mercado to spend the pesos they earn from our classroom in-centive program, Pesos por participar.

If you have “stuff” to contribute but haven’t had a chance to bring it in, we are still seeking donations of items for our market – from small trinkets/toys that the children can “purchase” for themselves to larger toys/games/stuffed animals for donations to GOoDworks of Chapin. This year, our students will be making these donations in memory of LMES’ dear friend, Sue Madden, former director of GOoDworks. She truly had an awesomely loving and generous spirit!

We are also seeking volunteersWe are also seeking volunteersWe are also seeking volunteersWe are also seeking volunteers (knowledge of Spanish not needed) to be present to help out with our activities. Help is needed for all classes! If you can volunteer, please reply to Sra. Gonzá-lez ([email protected]). Be sure to indicate the time you would be able to help. If you can stay for more than one class, that would be awesome (our K and 1st classes especially need extra help)! Separate volunteers will be needed for Sra. González’s (blue) and Sra. Fultz’s (red) classes since each homeroom will experience their own mercado.

mation about your career to share at an exhibit with our

3rd through 5th graders. Students will come by your ex-

Why a career fair in elementary school? Why a career fair in elementary school? Why a career fair in elementary school? Why a career fair in elementary school? In anything, goals

are important. While a child’s career goals will change nu-

merous times throughout his/her life, having something

that you’re looking forward to in the future keeps you mo-

tivated in your present. Also, it’s important for students to

learn about the many career opportunities an dhow you

Students have created slide shows, videos, and

collages on iPads about the content they are

studying in class. Due in part to successful fund-

raising efforts last year, each grade level has an

iPad cart to use with students. Teachers have

chosen samples of the technology projects and

posted them on our school web site. The Tech-

“On behalf of some of the homeless community in

Columbia, we, at StreetSide Ministry, want to thank

you for the generous donation of blankets from the

youth organizations, Girls on the Run and Men in

Training. At this time of the year, as temperatures

drop and shelters fill up, homeless people face new

challenges in addition to diminishing numbers offer-

ing warm meals.

“The generosity from your children and their families

was overwhelming. The blankets were distributed to

our friends on the street within the week and were so

appreciated.

“StreetSide Ministry is made up of folks from various

area churches, schools, businesses and families who

come together once a week to minister physically and

spiritually to the homeless men and women of Co-

lumbia.”

examination. If an appointment has been

made, please notify your school nurse of the date and

time. If you have already taken your child to your

health room or have your provider fax (476-4620) a

report to the school.

If you are in need of assistance, there are re-

sources available. If you have any questions, please

Run Hard Columbia Kids MarathonRun Hard Columbia Kids MarathonRun Hard Columbia Kids MarathonRun Hard Columbia Kids Marathon The Run Hard Kids Marathon is a 13-week endurance building running/walking program designed for kids, K5 - 8th grade. Kids will run the distance of a full marathon (26.2 miles) over the course of the 13-week program. To qualify for race day, kids must train for the last mile of their marathon by running a total of 25.2 miles in 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile, 3/4 mile or 1 mile increments between December 8, 2013 and March 7, 2014. This is not a timed event and there are NO official winners.

Packet PickPacket PickPacket PickPacket Pick----upupupup All participants must pick up their race packet on Friday, March 7 between 12pm - 9pm at the Health & Fitness Expo or on Saturday from 5:30am - 7am. The Expo will be located at Clarion Hotel Downtown. There will be no race day registration.

Details

All runners receive a technical race shirt and all finishers receive a medal and finish line refreshments.

TrainingTrainingTrainingTraining Students will run with a parent and/or in their school's PE class, after school program or with their friends and family on their own. Each child will keep a log sheet to track their progress. Mileage is based on adult supervision and the honor system. As each child completes the final mile on the actual marathon course on Saturday, March 8, 2014. Your child can chart their miles in 0.25-mile increments and won’t have to feel pressured to run a complete mile when they begin their training. However, if your child is training with their school’s PE class they may structure it differently. Upon completion of 25.2 miles, each child must bring their completed log sheet to packet pick-up. This completed log sheet is required in order to receive your race packet and complete the final mile on Saturday, March 8, 2014.

Safety We go to great measures to insure your child's safety. We appreciate everyone abiding by our rules to accomplish our mission. First, each child will receive a T-shirt that they must wear on race day. Your packet will also contain your child's race number that MUST be worn on the front of their shirt. Attached to the race number is a PARENT CLAIM TAG. You must detach this and keep it with you so that you may identify and claim your child after the race. No child will be allowed to leave their designated fenced area unless the parent/guardian has the matching number on their claim tag. No IDs will be accepted in place of the race number. You MUST have the matching race number! Second, we will have uniformed officials such as firemen, policeman, athletic teams and high school ROTC members running with the children. They will insure that the runners stay on the correct course while offering them encouragement to finish their marathon goal. This is also another reason your child must wear their designated race day T-shirt so our officials can identify them. With your help, we will make sure the kids have an enjoyable and safe experience!
