Fr. Anthony’s Faith Formation Corner The Mystery of the Incarnation

Today is New Year’s Day and also, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. A few months ago I have written on the Blessed Mother. So this time, I would like to discuss the central doctrine of our faith which we cele-brate in a special way during the Christmas season. At the beginning of the Gospel according to St. John, we read: “And the Word was made flesh and made his dwelling among us.” This is the central mystery of Christianity: the mystery of the Incarnation, which lies at the heart of our faith. Like I mention again and again, this doctrine clearly distinguishes Christianity from the other major world religions such as Islam and even Judaism. Like the Muslims and the Jews, Christians are monotheistic. Like them, we also greatly honor father Abraham. But unlike them, we believe that God has become human: that God has entered into human history through the person of Jesus Christ. This is very difficult to grasp, especially for the Muslims: how could Almighty God lower himself and become a lowly human being? Yet, this is precisely what Christians have professed for cen-turies. In the letter of St. Paul to the Philippians, there is a famous hymn—which Paul probably did not compose, but just got from other sources—that describes the self-emptying of God: “Though he was in the form of God, Je-sus did not deem equality with God… Rather he emptied himself and took the form of a slave, being born in the likeness of human beings…” Yes God indeed has become human. The early Church Fathers said that God became human so that we might become God. A very bold statement, indeed: and there was a lot of truth to it. What a wonderful exchange! As we reflect on this great mystery during the Christmas season, there are a few things for us to ponder… First of all, we believe that God became human in order to redeem humanity from sin. But medieval theologians raised the question: would God have become human had Adam not sinned? Would the Incarnation have taken place anyway had there been no original sin of Adam and Eve? One school of thought answered this question in the negative: there was no need for God to become man if there were no original sin. Others answered it in the affirmative: God would have become human anyway whether or not Adam sinned—because God is God and the divine action/initiative can never be contingent on human causality. In other words, the Incarnation was part of God’s eternal plan anyway regardless of what Adam did or did not do. What do you think about this question? I do not know… Secondly, the North African theologian Tertullian famously wrote in the 2nd/3rd century: Caro cardo salutis—the flesh is the hinge of salvation. The human flesh has a lot to do with salvation because after all, the Son of God be-came flesh. In the final analysis, Christianity is as much a physical religion as it is a spiritual one… These are just a few things to ponder. Many more things, of course, can be said about the Incarnation. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
