description

James Jones delivered the presentation at 2014 Student Housing Forum. The 5th annual Student Housing Forum brought together university planners and managers with designers and student accommodation experts to look at the ways in which universities can provide distinctive, affordable, secure, supportive and inclusive campus living. It examined the features that distinguish best practice, considers the challenges for supply and affordability and beyond that explores the ways in which student accommodation goes beyond a residence to an environment that offers the best campus experience. what is the objective of student housing?

•  create a pleasant place to live

•  make a contribution to the area’s public realm

•  engage the knowledge agenda

Page 3: James Jones - Architectus - Case study | Creating living and learning environments

how to create effective student housing?

•  approach to the setting, location, context

•  understanding of the building type

•  architecture as the means

Page 4: James Jones - Architectus - Case study | Creating living and learning environments

approach to setting + location + context

analysis - understanding - astute urban tactics

•  integration with campus or city plan •  response to urban context •  morphology - underlying spatial logic •  plan form + cross section response to site •  permeability - through block links •  internalisation - externalisation •  increase pedestrian amenity – eliminate car parking •  create gathering spaces for performance and events •  compose public space to facilitate natural activation

Page 5: James Jones - Architectus - Case study | Creating living and learning environments

understanding of the building type

design explicitly for ways of living in small apartments - unit sizes can be small if;

•  accompanied by communal living areas (1)

•  communal, cooking, eating areas well designed •  bedrooms acoustically rated, private •  bedrooms do not open onto communal living areas •  work/study space included in each bedroom •  mechanical exhaust from kitchens + bathrooms •  adequate minimum storage space •  ability to modify internal environment •  natural light + adjustable air to all habitable rooms

Page 6: James Jones - Architectus - Case study | Creating living and learning environments

stumbling blocks – observations

•  administrative efficiencies which may meet provider’s bottom line, can discourage student interaction and integration of the development with the community (1)

•  too much emphasis on ‘ what it looks like’ can shift emphasis, focus or understanding away from ‘how it works’

•  green stars no guarantee of urban connection, natural activation, social integration
