2010 James City County Fairis dedicated to

Sandy Wannerin recognition of his 25 years

of service

James City County has held an Expo or CountyFair for 33 years highlighting our agriculturalheritage. For the last 20 of those years, CountyAdministrator Sandy Wanner, who retires fromCounty service August 1, 2010, has been anenthusiastic supporter and contributor to theFair’s success and popularity. Since his first year asa member of the County Fair Committee in 1990,Sandy has helped to nurture and grow thisuniquely local community event.

As Assistant County Administrator, Sandy wason the County Fair Committee and has remaineda supporter and member when possible despitehis additional pressures and responsibilities asCounty Administrator. Recognizing the Fair’spopularity and the need to improve facilities andaccommodate growing attendance, Sandy pavedthe way to move the Fair from its beginnings inNorge to Upper County Park and finally to itscurrent location, Chickahominy Riverfront Park.

James City County’s support is largely due toSandy. It goes beyond his personal commitmentto include the many hours dedicated by his staff, the availability of County park facilities, and theassurance that the County will be an active part-ner year after year. It would be hard to imaginewhat the County Fair would look like today with-out the leadership and vision that Sandy Wannerhas shared. Therefore, it is only appropriate thatthe 2010 James City County Fair is dedicated tohim in recognition of 25 years of service to thecommunity and steadfast support of the Fair.

The fair is made possible through the help andsupport of many people. To the following we saythanks:

Lawn Mower Racing returns to the Fair onFriday evening and continues Saturday after-noon. These mowers might look like they camestraight from mowing the front yard, but they arereally highly modified, super fast machines.

This event is coordinated by the Virginia LawnMower Racing Association (VLMRA), which is affiliat-ed with the American Racing Mower Association(ARMA). For more information, please visit:http://www.vlmra.com/ and http://www.golawn-mowerracing.com/.

Officially, ARMA rules cover seven classes ofracing. The classes are divided based upon theamount of modification to the lawn mower andthe engine size.

• The most minimally modified lawn mower is theSuper Stock class. While some changes are permit-ted, mowers must maintain an 8 to 1 gear ratio.Mowers built in a similar manner are raced bypre-teens through 15 year olds in the JuniorPrepared class.

• The Mini-Sportsman class mowers were builtfrom original engine blocks that were 8.5 horse-power and under.

• The Sportsman class mowers use valve-in-blockmotors, originally built at 8.5 horsepower and over.

• Our newest class is the Mod-X class, built fromeither a single overhead valve or twin opposedvalve-in-block motor that started as 20 horsepowerand under.

• Super Sportsman mowers start with motors25 horsepower and under.

• And, the Pro-X class uses a variety of single cylin-der, four stroke lawn mower engines with unlimitedhorsepower ratings. The ARMA rulebook providesmore details concerning mower builds and specifi-cations. ARMA, the first national group to have a JPclass for kids at a national level, believes in thefamily and want to include everyone at the races.

If all you’re doing is cutting grass . . . get out of theway! Be sure to check out the motor races onFriday and Saturday.

2010 Farm Bureau Tractor PullSponsored by Farm Bureau

The James City County Fair Committee is pleasedto present the 5th Annual Farm Bureau Tractor Pull. The2010 event will again include a lawn garden tractor pull onFriday, June 25, beginning at 4 p.m., and an Antique (manu-factured in 1959 or before) farm tractor pull on Saturday,June 26, starting at 10 a.m.

If you’ll remember, the tractor pull is a competition inwhich farm tractors pull a weighted sled down a level, measured dirt track. The tractors are divided among differ-ent weight classes, and in each weight class the tractor thatpulls the sled the furthest wins! In the beginning, the sledcreates very little resistance. However, as the sled movesdown the dirt track the weights on the sled move forward, creating more and more resistance until the tractor can’tpull anymore.

Sponsored by the Charles City, James City,New Kent, and York County Farm Bureaus, the tractor pullis again made possible by the members of Reunion of thePast, Branch 104, of the Early Day Gas Engine & TractorAssociation, in Yorktown.
