In Our Hearts Forever

Mary Esther YanezMom, you meant the world to me. You had my back even when I was wrong. You loved me like I was the last one on earth and all I had to do was hug you in return. You were My Mom and I, I was your baby. I love you.Love, Justin

I hope it’s true that a year on earth is like a minute in heaven. If so, you’ll see me in about an hour. Meanwhile while we’re here please watch over us. Help us to be strong, guide us in the right direction, and remind us to be grateful. ank you for teaching me to be my own person, to follow my heart, to reinvent myself anytime I feel the need, and to dive into the future without fear.  Love You Always, Jennifer.

Sister, ve hearts ache for the sound of your voice and the feel of your touch.   e touch only a Big Sister can give. We loved, laughed, shared and cried together as six sisters and now we are left to learn to live without you. Five sisters remain that will carry your love and memory in our hearts for the rest of our lives so you see we will always be together.  We miss you sister Esther....Go play, go laugh, walk, and run but most importantly go Dance in the Kingdom of Heaven. Share with the Angels your beautiful talents and the creative art that you have shared with us. We love you Sissy!

Our sister was always expressing her gratitude to the Hayden/Winkelman community for their continued support and prayers throughout her illness and we thank you. We would like to share our sister’s own words written in a letter to our Mother … ”I am so very thankful to Saint Joseph’s Community who love my Mom and Dad so much, and to the Parishioners who have prayed for me.  Mom I feel the prayers of the People so much!”

Mary Esther Yanez, 61, passed away in Mesa on March 16, 2015, from cardiac arrest, after a long battle with illness. Mary is survived by her love, Richard Hobbs; parents: Pedro and Elizabeth Yanez; children: Jennifer Leah (Carlos) Suarez , and Justin Aaron (Kerri) Hune; grandchildren: Joshua Johnson, Jason Suarez, Jakob Suarez, Jaeden Suarez, Jordan Hune, Miles, Matthew and Mason; sisters: Anna (Edward) Garcia, Patricia Placenio, Janette (Sonny) Cruz, Liza (Howard) Clark, and Jeannie Casteneda; 16 nephews and nieces; and 18 great-nephews and nieces. Mary graduated from Hayden High School in 1971, going on to attend Central

Arizona College. She worked for Kennecott Copper Corporation and Hobart Industrial Supply. She loved crafting, jewelry dolls, pottery and flowers. Mary had a gypsy soul and a warrior spirit, and, made no apologies for her wild heart. She left normal and regular to explore the outskirts of magical and extraordinary; and she was glorious. Services were held in Mesa on March 23.

Dudleyville - Tracy Dartt & his musical family group, “The Dartts”, are a treat to the ears of music lovers everywhere, especially fans of Gospel music. Their song list flows from one style of music into another, built from a catalog of original

Gospel songs they’ve written themselves, and it’s all delivered with a smooth vocal blend and beautiful harmonies. The group, which travels full time through the U.S.A., performing around 200 concerts per year, consists of Tracy Dartt

and his wife, Sharon, their youngest son, Stone Mountain Dartt, and long-time group member, BJ Speer. Tracy is the author of the #1 hit song, “God On The Mountain”. This, and many of his other songs have been recorded by some of the world’s top Gospel musicians. Their brand new album, “Get Up And Get Your Shoes On” is a collection of freshly written songs available in the iTunes Store. You can also visit www.DarttMusic.com where you can check out a preview of their full length movie “The God On The Mountain Legacy”, listen to samples from

their albums, and order the movie DVD, as well as the albums. The Dartts will be appearing locally thanks to an invitation from San Pedro Valley Baptist Church, 4670 N. Dudleyville Rd. Pastor Anthony DaCunha says the whole community is invited. So, mark your calendar for Sunday, April 12. The concert begins at 11 a.m., but, most likely, Pastor DaCunha, would be just as pleased to see you for regular service, as well. For more information about The Dartts, visit their website, address given above, or visit them on iTunes or Facebook.

The Knights of Columbus Charity golf tournament is this Saturday at SaddleBrooke Ranch near milepost 93 on Highway 77 with sign in at 7 a.m. and play starting at 8 a.m. “The money raised from this tournament goes to local seniors for scholarships, as well as other education projects and charities,” tournament director John Wahlmeier said. The cost is $85 which includes a cart and lunch with many prizes and contests. “We have prizes for the top three finishers, but we also give a prize that everybody has a chance of winning, no matter where they finish,” Wahlmeier said.

It could be the team with the oldest player, or the team with the youngest, or a score that is the exact middle of the tournament or dead last according to Wahlmeier. “We keep it a secret until the day of the tournament,” he added. There will be two hole in one contests, one sponsored by Catalina’s Golf Cars of Arizona and another sponsored by Apache Gold Casino and resort. Council 5542, which serves Mammoth, Oracle and San Manuel, also supports the community food bank and Special Olympics as well as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout troop, which has a new Eagle Scout.

Leonor Hambly K-8 students participated in a math completion at Bradshaw Mountain High School in Prescott Valley. The students had to complete a combination of individual and group tests. This was a very difficult challenge, but our students did a great job. Damien Garcia placed second out of all the third graders, and Greace Corona received a metal for being the top of our group. Damien Garcia, Greace Corona, and Jeremy Aguirre qualified for state. The state competition will take place on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Rincon High

School. Our students that attended the competition are: sixth grade; Manuel (Manny) Guillen, Marissa Baragan, fifth grade; Aiyana Gonzales, Aaron (A.J.) Lopez, Miranda Gomez, Greace Corona, fourth grade; Brandon Garner, Damien Smith, Karina Inzunza, Jeremy (J.J) Aguirre, and third grade; Alonzo Sims, Damian Garcia. This was our first year attending a math competition and I would like to say that these students did an exceptional job competing against schools three to four times bigger than our school.

Before last Friday’s game versus top-ranked San Manuel, the Ray softball team was sixth in the most recent AIA rankings. But after an intense 9 – 8 victory against the defending back-to-back state champions, the Lady Cats are the new No. 1 team in the state. “A win like this give us a boost and hopefully gives us some drive,” Lady Cats’ head coach Rikki Galka said after the game. “I just hope our younger players can see what they’re capable of.” Ray’s Savannah Willis provided the late-game heroics to lead the Lady Cats to the win. After Naomi Hing and Janae Ruiz reached on a walk and an error, respectively, the senior catcher ripped a three-run homerun in the top of the sixth inning, breaking a 6 – 6 tie. “No,” Willis answered when asked if she knew the ball was gone when she hit it. “Not until I almost reached second and then I saw (the outfielder) walking back. I was just happy.” Left-hander Stormee Galka started the game for the Lady Cats, pitching three scoreless innings as her team built a five-run lead. But the Lady Miners battled back, coming up with four hits, including RBI singles by Mariah McBride and Dionne Ruiz. San Manuel also took advantage of three errors in the inning to tie the game 5 – 5 heading into the fifth.

“To be able to say we beat the No. 1 team and we had that many errors,” Stormee Galka would say afterwards. “It feels good to know we’re capable of taking state.” Each team scored a run in the fifth inning. In the top half, Ray’s Elisa Rodriguez hit an RBI single to reclaim the lead for the Lady Cats. But again the Lady Miners responded, this time on an RBI double by senior captain

Felicia Medina. After Willis’ three-run homer, the Lady Miners stormed back a third time, coming up with three hits, including an RBI single by Alyssa Cuellar. Another error by Ray, which had nine in the game, led to another run. At the end of the sixth, the Lady Miners trailed by only one run, 9 – 8.

Jacob Pace had only one hit against 13th-ranked San Manuel during last Friday’s game, but he made it count. With his team trailing 2 – 1 in the final inning against the Miners, the senior came up with bases loaded and with one swing gave the Bearcats a three-lead, hitting a grand slam homerun that scored Seth Harmon, Derek Pacheco, Destry Yocum, and, of course, himself. Pace’s heroics led the ninth-ranked Bearcats to a 5 – 2 victory and their sixth win in their last seven games. The lone loss during that stretch came just one game earlier against sixth-ranked Miami. According to head coach Rene Pacheco, the Cats did not play well against the Vandals, making Friday’s win a little more comforting. For the first six innings in Friday’s game, the Cats’ offense struggled, scoring only one run in the third inning to cut the Miners’ 2 – 0 lead in half. The Cats outhit the Miners, 8 – 6, but had

little to show for it until the final inning. Derek Pacheco, whose .518 batting average is second best in the section, was 3-for-4 with a double. Seth Harmon had two hits. Destry Yocum, who was the starting pitcher, had one hits as did Robbin Newman and Douglas McPeak. Yocum, a senior, pitched two innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out three. McPeak and Yocum’s brother Cole, a freshman, came on in relief. McPeak pitched two scoreless innings before the younger Yocum pitched three scoreless innings to close

the game. He fanned seven Miners’ hitters during his eighth appearance of the season. With the win, the Bearcats improved to 5 – 1 in Section VI, one game behind first-place and second-ranked Superior. The Cats hosted the Panthers on Apr. 7 in a matchup of the top two teams in the section and two top-10 ranked teams in the state. Upcoming schedule: Apr. 9 at Duncan, Apr. 10 at San Carlos (6 p.m.), Apr. 13 at Gilbert Classical Academy, and Apr. 14 at top-ranked Desert Christian. All games are scheduled for 4 p.m. unless noted otherwise.

San Manuel had one last chance in the bottom of seventh after two more errors by Ray put runners on first and second with one out, but the Lady Cats were able to secure the last two outs to close out the victory. “We’ve been hitting really well this season,” Rikki Galka said. “And that has allowed us to keep winning because, obviously, our defense is (a work in progress). The loss was only the Lady Miners’ second in their last 12 games. Head coach Deanne Brewer was pleased with the way her team continued to battle from behind. She is certain to have her players’ attention when practice rolls around. For a team with as much success as San Manuel, which is now ranked third, there are few and far between

coaching opportunities. “(Coming from behind) is important to us and it shows our character,” Brewer told Copper Area News. “And the loss gives us an opportunity to see the areas we still need to work on because the few minor mistakes we made were costly.” Ray upcoming schedule: Apr. 9 at Duncan, Apr. 10 at San Carlos (6 p.m.), Apr. 13 at Gilbert Classical Academy, and Apr. 14 at Desert Christian. All games are scheduled for 4 p.m. unless noted otherwise. San Manuel upcoming schedule: Apr. 10 at Pima and Apr. 13 at Desert Christian. Both games are scheduled for 4 p.m.

“HOOAH” was Chris’s favorite Army saying.

When he left us to his eternal rest four months ago on ursday, November 27, 2014, I found out how much he was loved and cared for.

Family, neighbors and friends expressed their feelings in many ways by the abundance of food taken to the house and luncheon, phone calls, cards, visits and money I received.

Father Mathew ayil gave a beautiful mass. Quint Avenetti’s eulogy was said as if Chris was standing by his side telling him what to say. Norberto (Chuco) Waddell gave the church readings and the o ering of the gifts were taken to the Altar by Chris’s Godparents, George

and Christina Armenta. ese were his wishes.

Mr. Frank Giroux devoted many hours of his time for Chris to have his uniform complete with all the medals he earned during his 25 years of service to his country and for the arrangement

of the full military honors funeral. You are a true friend.

“Ms. Patsy” Schoppell, Chris never looked more handsome. Mr. Rob Bulman and sta , your caring, compassion, sensitivity and patience means so much to me. Also for arranging the

attendance of the Fort Huachuca Military Honor Guard.

To pallbearers Nick, Quint, Sam and Guy Avenetti, Armando Carrillo and Tony Muñoz, Chris would have been proud to know you carried him to his nal resting place.

Luncheon ladies, Melinda Palma, Priscilla Morales, Lupita Yslas, Celia Muñoz, Silvia Muñoz, Josie Gonzales, Cecilia Magallanez and Anna Camarena (if I forgot to mention any ladies,

please forgive me). Mr. and Mrs. Joe Miranda made a special trip from New Mexico; your generosity in providing T-bone steaks made the luncheon a special treat. Larry and Terry

Bravo did a great job helping with the grilling of the steaks. e Leo Terrill Hall Members do a great job and are very generous in letting people use the hall in times like these.

To my neighbors, Peter and Lupita Yslas, you will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Barbara and Mandy Muñoz, the oral arrangements were beautiful.

Comadre Maria Muñoz, I don’t know what I would do without you. You are always by my side when I need you.

Melinda Palma, my sister, you have been a tremendous help.

To some special people in my life, Comadre Bernice Gonzales, Chris Lomeli, Richard and Donna Santos, Rosalie Gallegos, Frank and Susie Merino, Tony and Maribel Perez, Lucille

Monterde and Manuel Aguirre. Your friendship means more to me now since I lost Chris. I will forever be grateful for all you have done.

My daughters, Leticia De Los Reyes and Patricia and son-in-law Adam Carrillo were my right hands. Without their help, caring and time spent with me, I wouldn't have been able to make Chris’s funeral what he wanted it to be. All his wishes were taken care of the way he asked me to take cares of them. I will forever be grateful to you, my children, and know that I will never

forget everything you did for me and Christ during the nal stages of his life. I love you all very much.

A huge THANK YOU to all the people who took the time in one way or another to be part of Chris’s nal farewell.

May the Lord bless and be with you always.
