James Burton was born in Dubberly, Louisiana
in 1939 but grew up in Shreveport. From an
early age he beat on broom sticks and pretty
much everything else around the house.
A regular listener to KWKH Radio, he was ex-
posed to Chet Atkins, Chuck Berry and the like.
At age 14 he went professional, working club
gigs and private parties. The producer of the
Louisiana Hayride asked him to join the staff
band and he then played behind such greats as
George Jones, Johnny Horton and others.
After pairing up with Bob Luman in their band The Shadows, they moved on to Hollywood.
Ricky Nelson heard them there and invited the band to come to the Ozzie and Harriet Show.
James Burton then began getting calls from artists such as Dean Martin, Bobby Darin, The
Everly Brothers, Johnny Cash and the like.
In 1968 at the ripe age of 29, James got a call from
Elvis Presley to put up a band for Elvis’ show in Las
Vegas. He remained with Elvis until Elvis’ death in
1977.
Today, James can be found with his James Burton
Rock N Roll Foundation which supports music edu-
cation for
those in
need through guitar donations and music instruc-
tion to schools, hospitals and community service
organizations.
A bronze statue of Burton stands in front of the
Municipal Auditorium where it faces the building
for Burton’s Foundation just across the street from
“The Muni”.
