What’sInside

Without “fences” to limit where his imagination could roam,

Jim Henson (1936-1990) — artist, puppeteer, film director and

producer — created elaborate imaginary worlds filled with unique

characters, objects, environments and even languages and cultures.

Jim Henson’s Fantastic World, a new exhibition from the

Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES)

and The Jim Henson Legacy, offers a rare peek into the imagination

and creative genius of this multitalented innovator and creator

of Kermit the Frog, Big Bird, and other beloved characters.

Jim Henson’s Fantastic World is the inaugural exhibition in the

new 5,500 sq. ft. gallery space, the Della Penna-Fernberger | Paton |

Smith Galleries. The exhibition features 100 original artworks,

including drawings, cartoons and storyboards that illustrate Henson’s

talent as a storyteller and visionary. Among the variety of exhibition

objects are puppets and television and movie props, photographs of

Henson and his collaborators at work and original video productions,

including excerpts from Henson’s early career and experimental films.

Organized by The Jim Henson Legacy and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in cooperation with the Henson family,The Jim Henson Company,The Muppets Studio, LLC, and Sesame Workshop. This exhibition is made possible by The Biography Channel.Additional support has been provided by The Jane Henson Foundation and Cheryl Henson.

JULY 11 through OCTOBER 18, 2009FRED BEANS GALLERY

Working primarily in the 1920s, ‘30s, and ‘40s, many artists

turned their eyes toward the comedy and tragedy of

American life, exploring the everyday lives of everyday

people. These painters rejected the country clubs and

concert halls, and filled their canvases with steel workers

and pool players, sharecroppers and suffragettes, beach

bums and crowded bus stations. These artists looked at

life as it is, with all the rough edges, and their work is a

celebration of the energy and pathos of the American

spirit. Organized by the Michener Art Museum, this

exhibition samples some of the finest work from this

important genre of 20th-century painting, drawing on

the unique and extraordinary collection of regional

collectors Lee and Barbara Maimon.

OCTOBER 31, 2009 through FEBRUARY 14, 2010FRED BEANS GALLERY

In 1935, Bucks County painter Charles Ward (1900-1962)

made history when his mural, Progress and Industry, was one of

the first New Deal murals installed in the country.Ward created

three more murals as part of this famous Depression-era

program that celebrated the American spirit through art that all

could see and share. That program was a natural fit for Ward,

who once described his work as “paintings for people.” In

addition to his acclaimed murals,Ward made easel paintings,

drawings, and prints, and was known for his beautiful modernist

landscapes, insightful portraits, and scenes of workers both in

Bucks County and in Mexico. Organized by the Michener Art

Museum and curated by guest curator David Leopold, this

retrospective exhibition explores for the first time the entire

range of Ward’s body of work, work that resonates with deep

empathy for his fellow man and the land and people he loved.

As a landscape painter with a colorful and highly

personal style, Robert Alexander Darrah Miller

(1905-1966) is often associated with New Hope’s

modernist painters, though he disliked the idea of

being called a “modernist.” Born in Philadelphia,

Miller studied with Daniel Garber at the Pennsylvania

Academy of the Fine Arts, where he also learned

the crafts of portrait painting and still life. Curated

by Dr. Cher Krause Knight, Assistant Professor of

Art History at Emerson College, Boston.

On His Own Terms:Art and Life According to R.A.D. MillerTuesday, August 25, 1 to 2 pmBy Cher Krause Knight, guest curatorFee: members $8/non-members $15; includes Museum admission.Advance registration required.

In this talk Cher Krause Knight, guest curator for and author of An Independent Spirit:The Art and Life of R.A.D. Miller, will discuss the challenges in researching this extremely talented though underappre-ciated artist. Beyond the sensationalized aspects of Miller's life, we find a complex man who forged his own personal style, rather thansubscribing to the traditions and trends set by others.

OUTDOOR SCULPTURE EXHIBITIONS AT THE MICHENER ART MUSEUM

The Outdoor Sculpture Exhibitions are sponsored by

Carole Frances Lung is a sculptor, performance artist and

activist whose work investigates social issues related to the

production of clothing. She has constructed an outdoor

“loom” which mimics the shape of a prison cell once used to

hold inmates when the Museum was a prison, weaving the

walls and roof for the structure using articles of donated

clothing along with inmates’ uniforms. The artist hopes “This

performance/sculpture will draw attention to the complexi-

ties, dynamics and abuses of prison labor.”

Virginia Maksymowicz makes sculptural installations from a variety of

materials including clay, wood, concrete, plaster, bronze and cast paper.

She is interested in feminist issues and focuses on particular circumstances

of women from both the past and the present. Her recent installations

have combined representations of the female body with architectural

elements.Taking inspiration from Roman statues of the Virgin Mary posed

atop columns and spires, Aesthetic Distance replaces Mary with sculptures

of ordinary women — naked, and out of reach. Maksymowicz lives in

Philadelphia, and is Associate Professor of Sculpture at Franklin and

Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Micheal Grothusen, a Philadelphia sculptor, whose work is root-

ed in architecture, memory and experience, will exhibit his

large scale sculpture Life’s Joys-Life’s Disappointments. Influence

for this work comes from looking at commemorative vessels of

all types – sports trophies, urns, fountains and other forms of

public monuments or memorials. Through changes in scale,

material and patterning this work goes beyond these initial ref-

erences and asks questions about the similarity of the vessels

and their relationship to our everyday lives.

The History of the BCIU The Bucks County IntermediateUnit Collection (BCIU) began in the late 1940s as the Bucks CountyTraveling Art Collection. This collection was spearheaded by BucksCounty Superintendent Charles H. Boehm and PennsylvaniaImpressionist artist,Walter Baum. The collection dedicated onSeptember 26, 1949 included approximately 70 paintings. This collec-tion has now grown to over 350 pieces of artwork. The purpose ofthis collection was to expose and educate school children to localBucks County artists, particularly the Pennsylvania Impressionistsfrom the New Hope area. These works were exhibited in areaschools for many years, then later removed for conservation pur-poses.Through a partnership established in the late 1990s with theMichener Art Museum, Art on the Move was created in 2001, tobring back the original mission of the collection to the schools.
