ABoUt the ConFeRenCeThe great Rivers Athletic Conference consists of nine members: John A. Logan College, Kaskaskia College, Lake Land College, Lincoln trail College, olney Central College, Rend Lake College, southeastern illinois College, southwestern illinois College, and Wabash Valley College. since play began in the league in 1982, Logan has earned 53 conference titles.

The College’s main campus fronts Highway 13 and is located in Carterville, Illinois, only six miles east of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. It also has extension centers in Du Quoin and West Frankfort. Logan is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and was ranked fifth in the nation by Rolling Stone magazine based on research conducted at the Center for the Study of Community Colleges.

Logan’s baseball team annually ranks among the elite in community college baseball. The Volunteers are the current Region 24 champions and have won seven Region 24 titles overall. They have also earned nine conference crowns and made two JUCO World Series appearances (1992 and 2002). Twelve Volunteers have earned NJCAA All-American honors. Four former Vols have made it to the Major Leagues with Jamie Carroll still playing with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Vols won 39 games

last spring. Three players were chosen all-conference and one was selected all-region.

Halstead has built one of the top baseball programs in the country

Todd Poe joined the Volunteers as an assistant coach in the spring of 2009. A native of Marion and graduate of Marion high school, he played baseball for two years at Logan (1988-1990) under halstead’s direction. Poe owns and operates Future swings, a baseball instructional school in Marion. he is also an associate scout with the Atlanta Braves, and he coached the southern illinois Bullets, a summer league team. Page Kirkpatrick serves as the Vols’ recruiting coordinator, a position he assumed in the spring of 2010. he handles all recruiting aspects, including finding future prospects, developing relationships, and coordinating recruiting visits. he is primarily involved in the summer recruitment at

tournaments and showcases. Kirkpatrick is the head baseball Coach at Ziegler- Royalton-Christopher and teaches at Ziegler-Royalton high school. he has

been the recruiting coordinator and pitching coach for the southern illinois Bullets summer team for the past six years. Rounding out the baseball staff are volunteer coaches Doug Bogard (fifth year), Bruce Whitecotton (fifth year), and Kyle Suprenant (second year).

Jerry Halstead is in his 29th season as the head baseball coach at John A. Logan College. During that time he has built the program into one of the top baseball programs in the country. With an impressive record of 1,122-615, he ranks fifth in wins among active NJCAA coaches. He has also served as the athletic director at Logan since 2001.

Halstead is from Carterville and attended Southern Illinois University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1982. While at SIU, he pitched for the Salukis for three years, helping win Missouri Valley Conference Championships and participating in the NCAA Tournament.

The men’s basketball team, started in 1969, was the first intercollegiate sport offered at Logan. Always competitive, the program is a member of the ever-strong Great Rivers Athletic Conference. In addition to competing in one of the premier junior college conferences in the country,

Logan also plays against top Division I non-league opponents year in and year out.

Mark Imhoff is in his 17th season as head men’s basketball coach at John A. Logan College. In 2010, he became the winningest coach for Logan’s men’s basketball. His record is 321-188. In the past 16 years, the Volunteers have posted solid records under Mark’s direction, winning Region 24 Tournament titles in 1999 and 2000 and GRAC championships in 2007 and 2010. Before assuming his current position, Mark served as the assistant coach for the Vols for 10 seasons. The team compiled a record of 214-118 during that time.

Mark, a native of Murphysboro, attended John A. Logan College and played baseball for the Volunteers from 1975-77. he transferred to eastern illinois University and graduated with a B.s. in physical education in 1979. While at eastern, he worked as a student assistant for the Charleston high school basketball program.

Upon graduation from eiU, Mark worked as an assistant coach for basketball and football and as head baseball coach at sparta high school before returning to graduate school in 1982. he graduated from Morehead state University in Kentucky with a master’s degree in education/counseling and worked as an assistant baseball coach at MsU until 1983. Before coming to Logan, Mark was the head basketball coach and guidance counselor at DeLand-Weldon high school in illinois.

Zach Carpenter is in his first year as the assistant men’s basketball coach at Logan. Before joining the Volunteers, he served as an assistant men’s basketball coach for two seasons (2009-2011) at Wabash Valley College in Mt. Carmel, illinois. The Warriors went 58-11 during that time and competed in the nJCAA national tournament in 2011.

Carpenter is from Cleveland, tenn., and graduated from Bradley Central high school. he attended the University of Alabama at huntsville where he played basketball for four years, helping his team win a gulf south Conference Championship in 2002-03. After college he played professionally in Denmark for one season.

After finishing his playing career, Carpenter worked as the director of basketball operations at tennessee tech University from 2006-2008 and earned a master’s degree in instructional leadership. he served as an assistant coach at Louisburg College in north Carolina in 2008-2009.

Established in 1978, the Lady Vols basketball team has a rich tradition of success. Logan, the reigning Region 24 Tournament champion, has won 16 conference titles and 13 Region 24 Tournament titles overall. The Lady Vols have competed in the NJCAA National Tournament 13 times, including the 2010-11 season. Their best placement at nationals came in 1988 when they finished second. They have also reached the Final 4 four times and the Final 8 ten times. Fourteen players have been named NJCAA All-Americans.

Hawkins, Buldtman lead Lady Vols

Marty Hawkins is his 18th season with the women’s basketball program at John A. Logan College, and 14th as head coach. in 2000-2001, he led the Lady Vols to a Final 8 finish at the nJCAA national tournament and last season the Lady Vols placed in the

Final 16 at the nationals tournament. Before coming to Logan, he coached one season at Morton Community College and 14 at Loyola-Chicago.

A Chicago native and 1974 DePaul University graduate, he got his start in collegiate athletics first as an equipment manager, and then as sports information director at DePaul. During his tenure at DePaul, he worked in publications, statistics, and radio-tV production for the nationally ranked Blue Demons men’s squad. in 1978, he moved to Loyola University to assume the same responsibilities.

in 1979, hawkins took on the task of building the women’s basketball program while continuing in sports information. he left the administrative post in 1981 to devote his energy to coaching basketball.

hawkins then steered the program in its move from AWiA Division ii to nCAA Division i. During his tenure at Loyola, the Lady Ramblers won 227 games and three league championships. his teams had four 20-win seasons and victories over Division i powers like Kansas, notre Dame, Wisconsin, and illinois. he was named conference Coach of the Year three times and had a graduation rate of over 90 percent.

in 13 seasons as head coach at Logan, hawkins’ record is 247-155. he has 477 career wins as a head coach. he has a bachelor’s degree (with honors) and a master’s degree in economics from DePaul.

Amanda Buldtman begins her fifth year as the assistant coach for the Lady Vols.Born and raised in Metropolis, illinois, she graduated from Massac County high school

in 1998. she attended southern illinois University edwardsville where she played basketball for four years. During her tenure with the Cougars, her team qualified twice for the Division ii nCAA tournament. she graduated from siUe in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences.

in 2006, Buldtman completed with honors a Master of science degree in education with a specialization in sports studies at southern illinois University Carbondale. While working on that degree, she did an internship with Logan’s women’s basketball program where she served as a volunteer assistant coach.

Tom Ferris became the head coach for Logan’s men’s golf team in 1999, and he has turned the program into a perennial national contender. He has been named Region 24 Coach of the Year nine times and earned National Coach of the Year honors in 2011. Before taking over the men’s program, he coached the College’s women’s golf team when it was created in 1998. The Lady Vols won the Region 24 Tournament title in 1998 and qualified for nationals both years that he was at the helm.In addition to his coaching duties, Ferris serves as the Athletic Department’s network coordinator. He

has been providing play-by-play and color commentary for Logan basketball games since they began airing on the radio. A key voice on the Volunteer Network, he was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame as a broadcaster. He is a 1962 graduate of Wichita State University where he played football and baseball. The father of three, he and his wife, Kay, reside in Marion.

Men’s golf enjoys national spotlightLogan’s men’s golf program is one of the best in the country. The Volunteers are the current NJCAA National champions, having won that title in May. Logan also won the national championship in 2009. Two Volunteers have claimed national medalist honors, Marcelo Rozo (2010) and Filip Timmerman (2011).

Logan has qualified for 11 consecutive appearances in the NJCAA National Tournament and never finished lower than eighth place. The Vols are also the reigning Great Rivers Athletic Conference and Region 24 Tournament champions, earning that distinction nine of the past 11 years. Logan has produced the last nine individual Region 24 Tournament medalists, and 13 Volunteers have earned All-American honors, including current players Colin Robinson and Derek Rohlfing.

Begun in 1998, Logan’s women’s golf program has enjoyed much success. The Lady Vols have won four Region 24 Tournament titles, and they have competed in the last 11 NJCAA National Tournaments. Their best finish at nationals came in 2002 when they placed fourth. Logan has had seven individual Region 24 Tournament medalists, including current player, Alexis Gatton. Three Lady Vols have earned NJCAA All-American honors and one was an honorable mention All-American selection. 

Bill Glenn, who earned Region 24 Coach of the Year honors in 2010, took over the reins of the women’s golf program at Logan in 2004. The Lady Vols have won one Region 24 tournament title and placed second five times under his direction, participating in six straight nJCAA national tournaments. 

Born in georgia and raised in Chicago, glenn moved to southern illinois when he attended southern illinois University on a gymnastics scholarship. While at siU, he studied physical education and radio and television.

he is employed by Connect si and also works as an on-field host for the southern illinois Miners, known affectionately to the public as “Wild Bill.” he and his wife, tracey, live in herrin and have four children: Lauren, Matthew, taylor, and Michaela.

Logan’s softball team, which has been ranked nationally, has achieved success both on the playing field and in the classroom. The program won its first Region 24 title in 2010 and advanced to the nJCAA national tournament in saint george, Utah, where it finished ninth overall. The Vols’ 39 wins that spring were the most in school history. Logan has won four conference titles, produced seven nJCAA All-Americans, and had one player who competed in the 2008

olympics. Last season the Vols reached the finals of the Region 24 tournament. Three players earned all-region honors and five were selected to the all-tournament team. Four players were also named to the great Rivers Athletic All-Conference team.

Logan has been selected an Academic spring team of the Year multiple times by the nJCAA, including last season. Four players were chosen nJCAA Academic All-Americans.

Jileks bring wealth of coaching experience

Benton native Bruce Jilek, now beginning his 10th season on the job, took over the reins of the Logan softball program in January of 2003 and brought a wealth of coaching experience with him from herrin high school, where he built quite an impressive record of achievement. in 22 years there, he compiled 539 wins against only 102 losses, won 18 conference championships and 19 regional titles. his tigers teams made eight state playoff appearances, finishing second on four different occasions (1980, 1981, 1993, 1998). The illinois high school Coaches Association and herrin high school hall of Famer has put together a record of 295-144 since accepting the head coaching position with the Vols.

Best known for his knowledge as a pitching instructor, Jilek has worked with several All-Americans and one of his

protégés was invited to try out for the U.s. olympic team. Another of his former pupils, Kerri Blaylock, is the longtime head coach for the siU salukis softball team. in addition to softball, Jilek also coached football and basketball at herrin.

he attended siU and played football for the salukis. he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from siU.

Angie (Brewer) Jilek, a Benton native like her husband, is beginning her ninth season as the assistant coach for Logan. Along with her on-field coaching duties, she coordinates recruitment, travel, fundraising, and scheduling for the Vols. Before coming

to JALC, Angie had coaching stints with shawnee Community College, Waltonville high school, and Mid-Continent University. she also has international coaching experience, working for UsA Athletes international. As a member of that organization, she has led U.s. teams into softball competition in europe.

Angie also serves as an academic advisor at the college. she was a standout athlete at both Benton high school and Rend Lake College before pursing her academic career. she earned her bachelor’s degree from siU and her master’s from Rockford College.

This fall marks Bill Burnside’s third season as head volleyball coach at John A. Logan College. he spent seven seasons as assistant volleyball coach for the Lady Vols before taking over the reins from Fae Ragan who resigned the head coach position after 22 years.

in addition to his coaching experience at Logan, Burnside served as head volleyball coach at Lambuth University in Jackson, tennessee, for four years. he has also coached men’s club teams, worked at collegiate volleyball camps, and earned a UsA Volleyball CAP Level ii Coaching Certification.

A native of Lewes, Delaware, he played club volleyball at the University of Delaware for three years. he has a bachelor’s degree in

history from the University of Delaware and a master’s degree in physical education from southern illinois University. Along with his coaching responsibilities, he works as an academic advisor at the College.

James White is in his first season as assistant volleyball coach at Logan. originally from Flossmoor, illinois, he was a four-year letter winner in volleyball in high school. he played club volleyball at iowa state University for one year and at southern illinois University Carbondale for three years. While at siUC, he served as a volunteer assistant coach for the intercollegiate saluki volleyball team and last year was the assistant volleyball coach at Murphysboro high school.

White earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from siUC in 2010 and is currently working on a master’s degree in the same field.

The JALC volleyball program, which competes at the NJCAA Division I level, is the reigning

Great Rivers Athletic Conference champion and has won three

straight Region 24 titles. The team gained national attention with

two top-10 finishes in the NJCAA National Tournament (eighth in 2000 and seventh in 2002), and

four players have been selected NJCAA All-Americans. The team

has won four GRAC championships and five Region 24 titles overall.

Last year, five Lady Vols were named all-conference and three were selected all-region.
