    Nuruddin Salim Jahangir was the son of Akbar and his be-loved wife Jodha. He was extremely popular in his father'scourt because of his military skills and intelligence. His rsttriumph came at the age of 12, when he led a regiment ofsoldiers into Kabul emerging victorious. By the time Jahan-gir turned 16, he was made a 'Mansubdar', a high military

    post, commanding 12,000 men.

    But the peace did not last for long. Akbar and Jahangirargued over a number of number of issues. Jahangir didnot like the attention his father paid to his favourite scholar,Abul Fazi. Jahangir in the process picked up some badhabits and took to drinking heavy.

    Jahangir who was married by this time and had, had chil-dren and did not like the idea of his father favouring hisgrandchild Khurram. He felt that Akbar would favour Khur-ram over his eldest child Khusrau, who was the rightful heir.

    After a number of misunderstandings with his father, Ja-hangir marched to Allahabad where he proclaimed to beKing. Akbar was furious and cut off all ties with him. Jahan-gir blamed Abul Fazl for his fathers hostility and orderedthe scholar to be killed.

    Akbar nally came to his senses after the death of AbulFazl and the father-son duo were now reunited. Akbar de-clared Jahangir as the rightful heir and also placed thecrown on Jahangir's head before his own death.

    Jahangir after leading an irresponsible life, now ruled

    wisely. He like his father expanded his kingdom and crushedthose who rebelled against the Mughal rule. He is alsoknown to have released several prisoners of war and wasa great patron of the arts and learning.

    One of his greatest achievements in the eld of justice wasthe Golden Chain of Justice. Sixty bells, were connected toeach other with a chain outside the castle in Agra. Anyone

    with a grievance could pull the chain and get a chance tomeet the Emperor in person. Like his father, Jahangir wasvery tolerant towards other religions, more so because hisown mother was a Hindu Rajput Princess.

    The good times however did not last long. Jahangirshealth was deteriorating and this led him to travel toKashmir where he could take time off to recover. Here hefound the peace he desired. He built the magnicent

    Shalimar Bagh for his wife on the Dal Lake. It had sprawlinggardens and a number of terraces linked by a waterchannel. Three lovely pavilions were built with black marblepillars and big halls.

    Jahangir breathed his last in 1627. His son Khurram (ShahJahan) marched to Agra and took over the reigns of theKingdom, imprisoning his stepmother, Nur Jahan in a beau-tiful mansion.
