1 JAGUAR HERITAGE NEWS OCTOBER 2012 REPORT The big event in the last month was the unveiling of the new Jaguar F-TYPE in Paris, but the Heritage team have been busy on many other fronts as well. Jaguar F-TYPE Launch: On September 27, the exciting new Jaguar F-TYPE was unveiled to a large gathering of the world’s media at the Paris Motor Show. The wraps were finally off this much anticipated new product that had been previewed in the form of the C-X16 concept a year earlier at the Frankfurt Motor Show. A comprehensive press release containing product design, engineering and technical details had been released a few days earlier (click here to view) and many articles have already been written about this pivotal event in Jaguar’s evolving history and about the new car. However, alongside the main reveal at the motor show, there was also an exclusive VIP preview event that took place at the Musée Rodin on the evening of September 26. As the press materials emphasise, the new F-TYPE is a return to Jaguar’s heartland: a two-seater, convertible sports car focused on performance, agility and driver involvement. In recognition of this fact, Jaguar Heritage were asked to provide a number of sports cars from Jaguar’s past that would underscore this bloodline. Against the spectacular backdrop of the 18 th century Hotel Biron (the building that now houses the Rodin collection), a line-up was assembled that comprised fine examples of a Jaguar SS100, XK 120, XK 150 and of course C-type, D-type and E-type. Three of these were from the Jaguar Heritage collection and the other three were borrowed from private owners. The VIP guests were able to view these cars before the main F-TYPE event got underway; even a heavy downpour failed to dampen spirits as the F-TYPE was revealed, accompanied by singer/songwriter Lana Del Ray performing a new song called ‘Burning Desire’ composed especially for the event. Amongst the many articles written about the new F-TYPE was an 8 page review in the October 3 edition of Autocar. This was accompanied by an article by Matt Prior who had borrowed Jaguar Heritage’s famous E-type 77RW for a nostalgic trip back to the Jabbeke highway in Belgium – scene of the original Autocar and Motor magazine road tests in 1961 when the E-type recorded maximum speeds of 150 mph.

In the ensuing weeks, vehicles from the Jaguar Heritage collection have been loaned out to many other journalists who are writing articles about the new F-TYPE and who want to link the new car with the long lineage of previous Jaguar sports cars. Watch out for these in the November and December editions! Jaguar Heritage Relocation Update The relocation is now complete and the Jaguar Heritage staffs are settling into their new locations in Coventry and at Gaydon. A reminder that contact details can be obtained from our website at http://www.jaguarheritage.org/ContactUs.aspx The full range of services has now been re-established including the facility for placing online orders for Heritage Certificates. The price of these has increased slightly to £42 (worldwide, including postage), and supporting documentation can be uploaded as part of the ordering process. To improve security for website customers, we have now adopted the Sage Pay online payment gateway and it is hoped to add PayPal in the near future. As mentioned in last month’s newsletter, the Virtual Tour of the former Jaguar Heritage Museum at Browns Lane in Coventry has now been launched. It can be accessed from the Museum page on the Jaguar Heritage website or by clicking on the image opposite. The Virtual Tour provides 360° panoramic views from 7 different vantage points in the museum and includes hotspots that provide information about the 29 cars on display. There are also two interior panoramas that give an impression of what it is like sitting in the driver’s seat of the unique XJ13 or in the rear of the 1957 Mark Vll formerly used by HRH The Queen Mother! The Tour also provides three views from the upstairs Gallery; not only do these provide an aerial view of the vehicles on display at the north end of the museum, but they also give a close up view of the trophy cabinets and many of the original artworks that were on display. Once again there are hotspots which give additional information about the individual trophies and paintings. Jaguar Heritage has a fine collection of over 30 original oil paintings which

have all been catalogued and photographed as part of the Public Catalogue Foundation (PCF) programme. The PCF has partnered with the BBC who host the ‘Your Paintings’ website which now features over 172,000 paintings from a huge range of collections throughout the UK – a quite remarkable resource that can be searched by region, artist name or even subject matter!

You can browse through the Jaguar Heritage painting collection on this site which features large images of each artwork and information about the artist, the subject and the date when painted. Click here to visit the Jaguar page. Other Events: In addition to F-TYPE launch support, the team were kept busy during October with several other events. These included: Chinese Dealer Visits – Heritage Drives On October 10, Jaguar welcomed the first of four waves of visitors from China. The Jaguar Land Rover business has grown dramatically in China during the last couple of years and there are now nearly 100 JLR dealers across this vast country - more than in the UK. In September, nearly 500 Jaguars were sold in China making it the third largest market behind only UK and USA. China is already Land Rover’s largest market with YTD sales of an incredible 47,131 vehicles!

The visitors were all Jaguar sales or customer service staff from the dealer network and the 5 day trip to the UK was part of an incentive programme. For the majority of them, this was their first visit to the UK and the itinerary began with a Jaguar induction day that included a guided tour of the Castle Bromwich plant and a visit to the Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon where a number of iconic sports cars from the Jaguar Heritage collection are now on display.

To help reinforce Jaguar’s long heritage, the transportation between Castle Bromwich and Gaydon, via a lunch stop at Hampton Manor, was provided by a fleet of cars from the Jaguar Heritage collection. The visitors were fascinated by the old Jaguar and Daimler products most of which they had never seen before. The cars ranged from a 1969 Jaguar 240 up to the 2005 XJ Super V8 Portfolio which was the last car to be produced at Browns Lane. Of particular interest to the visitors were the two Daimler DS420 Limousines, one of which was also the last of the line and the other was formerly used by HRH The Queen Mother. Two further waves of Chinese dealer staff went through the same programme on October 15 and 22, with the final wave due on October 31. After their Jaguar day, each wave travelled on to Oxford for some sightseeing and the obligatory trip to the shopping mall at Bicester Village, followed by two further days of sightseeing in London. London Lifestyle Awards, Hurlingham Club – October 17 The London Lifestyle Awards are the ultimate celebration of the business, people and places that make London the great and amazing city it is. The awards are nominated by the public and business owners alike, but are voted for by the public before final judgement by the London Lifestyle Awards committee. Now in their third year, the awards were more hotly contested than ever in 2012 with nominations across 18 categories ranging from Restaurants to Cultural Attractions.

The winners were announced and the awards presented at a gala evening held at the Hurlingham Club on October 17. Jaguar Cars and Jaguar Heritage supported this with a selection of current and historic vehicles. The fleet of modern Jaguars provided transport for a number of VIP guests including Dame Kelly Holmes, Arlene Phillips, Duncan Bannatyne, Brian Friedman, Kate Garraway and Rosie Fortescue. On arrival at the Hurlingham Club, all the guests were greeted by the sight of five classic Jaguars including SS100, C-type, D-type, XK120 and XK150 arranged outside the front entrance – adding to the style and glamour of the evening. There was also an E-type on display in the central lobby.

Forthcoming Events: London to Brighton Veteran Car Run – November 4 The annual London to Brighton run for pre 1905 veteran cars will take place this year on November 4.

Look out once again for Jaguar Heritage’s 1903 Daimler 14 hp Tonneau Tourer which will be taking part in the run driven by Ben Cussons from the RAC Club. Jaguar Heritage’s 1901 Lanchester 10/12 hp Tonneau will also be making an appearance at the Saturday Motor Show event in Regent Street and will be on display in the RAC Club for the cocktail party and motor show awards ceremony on the Saturday evening.

This vehicle, which has been a regular participant in the London to Brighton run in previous years, is a fascinating design featuring a mid-mounted engine with two horizontally opposed cylinders of approx. 4 litres driving the rear wheels through a three speed epicyclic gearbox. The car is thought to have been originally owned by Rudyard Kipling and is the third oldest Lanchester still in existence. NEC Classic Motor Show – November 16-18

The Footman James Classic Motor Show is the biggest and most popular classic car exhibition in the UK. There will be a total of over 1400 cars on display from all eras, showcasing a myriad of marques and models, making it a motoring enthusiast’s paradise. This ‘Grand Finale’ to the UK classic season celebrates all ages - the veteran, the vintage, the classic and the future classic, bringing together the whole motoring spectrum in this unique annual celebration of motoring. The show also hosts the single biggest

gathering of UK companies and traders in the market, offering every conceivable product and service to the classic car owner/enthusiast. Jaguar Heritage will be there once again together with sister company Jaguar Classic Parts – look out for our large stand in the new venue of Hall 20 (just beyond Hall 6). As last year, we will be selling our full range of merchandise from the stand. A number of new clothing and gift items have recently been added to the range – providing the perfect chance to get that special present in time for Christmas! The Jaguar Classic Parts team will also be on hand to take orders and offer technical advice.

Some very special vehicles will also be on display on the stand. In celebration of the model’s 20th anniversary, the XJ220 that took part in the 1993 Le Mans 24 hours race will take pride of place at one end of the stand, still dressed in its original race livery. Alongside this will be a 1933 SS1 16hp 4-seater Tourer. This is a car that Jaguar Heritage acquired in 2006 and it has since been undergoing a full restoration. The work is now nearly complete and the car will be on show to the public for the very first time at the Classic Motor Show, resplendent in its original colour scheme of silver and blue! A full

report on this car and its restoration programme will appear in next month’s newsletter.

Finally, topping out the line-up of cars, it is hoped to be able to display the new Jaguar F-TYPE – the first chance to see this car in the metal (or should that be aluminium) at a UK show! Plenty of reasons why this year’s Classic Motor Show will be an unmissable event. Jaguar Heritage Personnel Update: One omission from last month’s newsletter was some news about a key member of the Jaguar Heritage team. Chief Archivist, Anders Clausager retired at the end of August after 12 years with Jaguar Heritage and many years prior to that with BL Heritage. Author of several books and with a wealth of knowledge about all things Jaguar and Daimler, he made a huge contribution to expanding the Jaguar Archive and compiling databases on many key models. Anders has been progressively handing over to his replacement as Chief Archivist, Faye McLeod, during the last year but the good news is that he will not be disappearing straight away; he has taken up a part time role as a consultant based at the Archive team’s new office in the Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon where he will continue to issue Heritage Certificates and work on the databases – as well as answering all those tricky historical questions that no-one else can!

Finally, having been working as a consultant for several months, I have now joined the Jaguar Heritage staff as Marketing & Communications Manager. To help you put a face to the name (at the insistence of my colleagues), I have included a picture from the recent Swallow to Jaguar 90th anniversary tour that has been nicknamed the “Wallace and Gromit” photo. No prizes for guessing which is which!
