Jaguars by royal appointmentFuture royal, Kate Middleton has been given access to a £500 000 (R5.6 million) fleet of luxury cars so that she gets to the church on time for her wedding. The British royal bride said she does not want to arrive at Westminster Abbey in a horse-drawn carriage like her predecessors.

Palace officials have taken delivery of seven new Jaguar XJ limos for the wedding scheduled for April 29, the London Daily Star reported.

The British made cars were dispatched from the company earlier in March.

Palace officials said the royal Rolls-Royces and Bentleys would be ‘too stuffy’ for her and her groom, Prince William.

“When the Prince of Wales was attacked by students in his Rolls-Royce, it sent a message out about what people think is acceptable,” a royal aide said.

Have you ever wondered where the terms Chairman, Board, Members of the Board originate? History will tell you that King Henry the VIII had a room where he and his entourage decided who was to be beheaded next. His minions (members) all sat on benches around a substantial table while he occupied the only chair. The table was called a board and since his royal butt occupied the only chair, he was referred to as the Chairman of the Board.

I just love the definition of a committee found in Brewer’s Thesaurus: When the Speaker leaves the Chair, the members form a Committee, where anyone may speak once or at the same time. Sounds familiar?

At our first meeting, the new Chairman relented and allowed all committee members to be seated on chairs – it’s called team building. Since the recent A.G.M. was poorly attended, let me introduce the new team:Chairman: Rob Archibald. OBjECTiVES Of THE CHair• To promote fun in the Club. Many clubs

in South Africa are faced with the problem of diminishing membership and a certain degree of apathy. Most of us drive iconic cars and being fairly new to the Republic of the Western Cape, I can vouch that there can hardly be a more beautiful place on earth. I appeal to all members to support the monthly Fun-Runs and enjoy the fellowship, food and stunning beauty of our Province.

• To increase membership. A difficult ambition but essential for the ongoing success of the Club.

• To retain members. It’s all very well to increase membership, but it is more important to offer existing members activities which are appealing, interesting and affordable.

• To promote use of our Clubhouse – another thorny issue but more on this a bit later.

• To engender mutual respect between

members. This may sound a bit ominous but “politics” is to be found in most clubs and this together with “hidden agendas” have no place in the Cape Jaguar Club.

FuTurE EvEnTsAnnuAL ConCours AT TImour HALLsundAy 03 AprILOurannualConcoursd’EtatandPride&OwnershipCompetitionneednointroductiontotheband of regular participants. Competing in concours is not everybody’s cup of tea and doing so successfully, demands extraordinary determination and hundreds –perhaps even thousands- of hours of painstaking work in pursuit of perfection. Many cars are prepared by professionals and the cost of getting a car ready for the major concours of the world like, Pebble Beach in California –the ultimate modern concours event-, Amelia Island in Florida, USA, or Concorso d’Elegance Villa D’Este on the shores of Lake Como in Italy can run into many thousands of Rands, Dollars or Euros.

Concours is a French word meaning a competition, parade, or show and the earliest use of the term concours d’elegance in terms of motor vehicles was in part of an event held in France in 1899, but this referred to the passengers rather than the cars. Concours d’élégance, referring to a competition for motor vehicles, was suggested by the then president of the Automobile Club de France around the turn of the (previous) century. This title was adopted for all future such competitions. Such events did not start in England until around 1910 where they were classed as an “appearance “ competitions, and entrants went to great length to present their cars in pristine condition.In1913,theprize-winnersattheBrightonconcoursincludedWilliamMorris,whoseMorrisOxfordCoupésportedcarnationsincutglassvases,andEdwardPalmerwithaSinger,finished in black and white with nickel plated fittings, which had been driven to the event from London.

A true Concours d’Elégance was –and in my opinion still is- a competition of elegance, a beauty show if you like for mainly new cars and it was therefore no surprise that soon we saw the introduction of the “Motor Mannequin” –often accompanied by dogs- to enhance the overall look of the entry.

The name Concours d’Etat, literally translated as a concours of condition or use, was introduced to emphasize a concours of cars which can be used on the roads as opposed to “trailer queens”.

Full information about the concours and entrance forms should have been distributed to members by the time you read this.

Fun-run and LunCH at nWAnEdI WInE & CounTry mAnorSituated on the Noord Achter Paarl Road, north of Paarl, is where Gavin & Jean Stork, founded Nwanedi Estate, named after the Nwanedi Game Reserve on the foothills of the Venda mountains, where they were originally married and were inspired by the natural and wild beauty of the region.

In 1996, the quest was to find a suitable property of about 5 ha to retire to. They found a derelict site with the most stunning setting and views. With a life-threatening passion for trains, yes trains, whether model, garden or proto-typical steam trains, the property was purchased solely with the intention of retirement and building a model steam railway.

Inreality,31hacouldnotbeconsideredaretirementhome,butafarm;henceguidancewassought from local agricultural professionals. Following tests, advice was that the piece of land was of the finest in Paarl, and would be wasted unless the most noble of red wine grapes was established. Sparing nothing, consultants were appointed and the owners did as they were told! They built a country manor house, but instead of retiring, they started producing wines and expanded the house,whichnowboast12luxurysuitesandtheBAOBABRestaurant.

The spacious, stylish Baobab restaurant and terrace, secluded by vineyards, offers a relaxed atmosphere and allows diners to relax in comfort while offering the occasion for guests to interact with the chef in their open plan kitchen. and provides an informal and relaxed dining experience. The use of organic seasonal produce, herbs and spices harvested daily from the estate’s orchards and gardens, is what sets the restaurant apart from other venues.

Although many of the model trains are still in storage, Gavin Stork, has promised me to introduce us to his hobby and to give us some history and background to the many railways related pictures on the wall of the restaurant. I am sure that this visit to Nwanedi will be a memorable one.

Further details and booking information will be disseminated to you in the usual way.

JCAsA JAMBOREEs 2011 AT QuEEnsToWninCludES THE 50TH anniVErSary CElEBraTiOnS Of THE E-TypES and THE MarK X / 420GSTime marches on and in a way it scary to realise that there are only 75 days left to prepare for our departure for Queenstown. The information has been disseminated to all members, but, at the time of typing this, the response from CJC members has been disappointing. Since joining the Club, I have attended all four Jamborees held during the last 15 years at which Jaguar owners from both Northern Regions and our Club were well represented, but unfortunately, no-one from the two clubs in KZN joined us. However, this year, the JC of Natal will travel to Queenstown in six cars and entrants from the Midlands Club (Pietermaritzburg) are also expected to be present. Surely, we are not allowing the CJC to be outnumbered by the much smaller clubs from “The East”?

10 Rooms have (provisionally) been booked at the Premier Hotel in Knysna at rates substantially below their rack rates following my assurances that we were bound to need 10 rooms. Surely you do not want me to eat humble pie when I have to inform them of the final numbers?

What more can I say to win you over to join this National Get Together of Jaguars and Daimlers to have fun, meet people with likeminded interests and celebrate the 50th anniversaries of the iconic E-Type and the Jaguar that usually gets less praise or admiration, but also has many admirers: the first Jaguar saloon with unitary construction, independent rear suspension and disc brakes, the mighty Mark X.

Please, do not let me down!Fortunately this situation has now

improved.

LETTEr From Tony BroWn

Walter Clay Hill20/7/1919 – 20/01/2011

It seems that recently several friends have shuffled off their mortal coil, but I was deeply shocked and saddened to hear of

the death of Walter, whom I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing in 1992 at his ranch at Sewall’s Point, Florida and with whom I kept in touch over the years. He was particularly interested in the C-Type project, and was most encouraging on the matter. I make no apologies for reprinting the article I wrote at the time, a history of a deep devotion to our marque which led to a collection sans pareil, one that today would take very deep pockets and many years to reassemble.

I want you to imagine that one day you open your garage and survey the contents therein, feasting your eyes on cars of which heretofore you have only been able to dream. Amongst the collection first of all you have two of the 16 XKSS’s made by Jaguar, plus so many other important cars that you really cannot believe your eyes. You are the kid who has been given the keys to the candy store! This is what befell us when Walter Hill, that rare American who for many years was so passionate about our marque, opened up his garage for John Burton, George Gibbs and I to see back in February 1992. John and I had gone to see the Daytona 24 hour race, and it wasGeorgewho kindlyintroduced us to this wonderful gentleman.

Walter’s fascination with Jaguars dates back to the euphoric age of the 1950’s and he became determined one day to own an XKSS; his quest for this most rare of Jaguars began in 1968 with a phone call to his friend Reggie Smith who said that such things were unobtainable, but Walter persisted. After a fruitless year’s search he once again phoned Reggie and was advised that if, a small if at that, such a vehicle was to come on the market it would probably be advertised in a magazine called Competition Press, something Walter had never heard of. Walter at this moment was in Miami and phoned around until he found a news stand that had a copy, went straight over and of all things there within was an XKSS for sale! The story of the acquisition of his first XKSS, is one of my favourite stories of all time.

The advertiser was a garage proprietor in

OlathaKansas, oneJoeEgle(sic),wassellingup and wanted rid of his personal collection. Walter took the first TWA flight out the next day but couldn’t come to an agreement on the price and left empty handed. If nothing else, Joe Egle was a salesman and phoned Walter many times over the course of the next year, the price slowly coming down to half the original asking price, terminating one day with a phone call to say that he had found a buyer but felt that really, since Walter was so passionate about Jaguars, that he should if he wanted become the owner and not the other. Walter flew out the next day to Kansas, bought the car and arranged for it to be shipped forthwith out of the state of Kansas.

Unfortunately time has flown and with it my memory so I was horrified to find that my daughter had recorded over one of my tapes of that meeting so the actual order of the collection and other details are lost, but I shall

continue with what I know for certain from the remaining tapes and what remains in my memory of that very special day.

So began a collection that at the time I considered better than that of Jaguar itself.

Apart from the two cars mentioned above, the collection contained the D-Type that achieved fastest speed ever officially attained by a D-Type, four XK120’s including chassis no. 1 and 123, twoC-Types and a replicaC-Type, the chassis no. 27 E-Type, an outside lock car, one of the very first made and a commemorative one, one of the last 50 V12s madein1974(bothRHD),anSS90,thefirstI had ever seen, the lightweight E-Type, a Mk VII and the group 44 XJR5 of Bob Tulliusfame, plus several famous American cars and to top it all off a couple of crop duster planes. Laterontherewasalsothe“second”XJ13butmore of that later; oh and I nearly forgot the

original 4 cylinder 2 litre Jaguar engine on adisplay stand and so many models and pictures that it would take a week to take it all in. I think it sums up Walter completely to see what was written on a beam above the collection:-

“Their sweet lines all but take my breath away, and I desire them as much for their beauty as for their use.”

I still have a photo of that and it touches me to the core every time I look at the album. It was written exactly like that on two lines, all in capitals.

Walter in the 1970’s got very interested in concours and originality, and having bought chassisno.123XK120(fortheprincelysumof$1,500) he proceeded to turn this into a show car, culminating with first prize at the Pebble Beach concours at the beginning of the 1990’s. This car has now been sold in the USA after failing to meet its reserve price at auction, reputedly for approximately £.225,000 (± R. 2.5 million).

Onecarthat fascinatedmewastheWalterHansgen D-Type, chassis XKD 529, which he campaigned so well that he was never bested. This car was sold on in 1959 and was changed toa3.8litreengine,a2.53rearaxle,anddiscwheels as you can see from the photo before running at Utah and achieving 298.42 km.Finally, much later on in 1980, the car suffered tornado damage when a building collapsed on it and Walter Hill acquired it, restoring it exactly

to the form it had when it ran at Utah. This car is internally a D-Type, but as you can see from the picture externally looks very different to standard; a fascinating piece of history.

Walter’s SS90 was the subject of “a full restoration” in England, but when he got the car back, the motor lasted no more than 16 kilometres before it exploded. It turned out that the replacement pistons were the correct size but rather incredibly were designed for a slow revving tractor, not a high revving Jaguar! This car was “on the button” and I still have the tape of the throaty roar as he started it up. I believe that there were about 22 SS90s made and I feel privileged to have seen two during my lifetime since many have never had the opportunity to see one ever. I wonder how many survive over all.

Right, the story continues, but not in this month’s edition; there is much more to write about this fascinating collection I can assure you.

PS. Aura and I visited Walter Hill in May 2001 and were as gobsmacked as Tony (excuse the Americanism, but it was in America after all that we met this chivalrous ex airline pilot) and what a pleasure it was to be guided through his wonderful collection which, sadly, did not remain intact. (RS)

THE KillarnEy CluBHOuSEDuring the course of last year, a questionnaire was prepared to be send out to gather details of what members really wanted from the Killarney Clubhouse. The questions which appeared were later seen to be somewhat “leading” in nature and a decision taken not to issue this questionnaire, but I intend to send an amended one to you in due course and I urge you to participate since we really want to know what you would like.

A sub-committee has recently been set up to examine ideas to encourage member participation. Those serving on this committee are: Susie Lawton; Steven Marsh; Rob Archibald; Wally Parkes and Wayne Enticott

Motor racing is not for everyone but the venue can and must offer more than this.

How about Beef Stroganoff on the day of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Fish & Chips during the Belgian GP or Spaghetti Bolognaise watching the Italian GP on a big screen while sipping a cold Sauvignon Blanc? Just a thought.

My very best wishes to all members of our fine Club.
