To All Nobles, Ladies and Friends of Jaffa,

I am so proud to be the Potentate of Jaffa Shrine! So many people made the Potentate’s Reception a night to remember. The Chief Aide, Richard and Kathy Brown, Assistant Chief Aides, Sparky and Jo Ann Langer, Tom and Bonnie Knouse, and Ralph “Bud” and Janice Campbell, along with Divan members and their Ladies, Special Ladies, and Aides and their Ladies, transformed the banquet hall and stage into a beautiful setting and the Chanters rendition of children’s songs, especially “How Much is that Doggie in the Window” made the audience join in and “arf” their way through the song, and remember other songs from their childhood. All of this reminded us “It’s All About The Kids.” I was filled with so much pride as I saw so many members of the Units form the Crescent on the floor. Also the performance of the Concert Band and The Drum and Bugle Corp completed the night. The Flood City Brass Band provided lively entertainment and will be back for New Year’s Eve. I also want to thank all the members of our Units and Clubs along with all of the Ladies who volunteered many hours of their time to make the circus a huge success! We couldn’t do it without all of your help! Mark your calendars! This year’s Caravan will be held on Saturday afternoon, June 14th at 5:00 P.M. in DuBois. Bus transportation will be provided. The bus will leave the Jaffa parking lot at 2:00 P.M. sharp. I would love to see all the Units and Clubs participate in this parade. Bring your family. The members of the DuBois Shrine Club are planning a fun and entertaining day for you. After the parade, along with a time for fellowship, a barbeque chicken dinner will be served at the fire hall. Thank you members of DuBois Shrine Club for handling all the arrangements for this parade! Remember, Membership Keeps Us Rollin’ and this year we are offering two incentives to those who bring in new members: One - If your Unit or Club has 30 members and you bring in 15 new members, (half the number of your membership roll) new or reinstatements, all members of your Unit and their ladies will attend the New Year’s Eve Party at Jaffa free

Two - If you are a First-Line Signer on three petitions in 2014, your dues for 2015 will be paid for you. Thanks again for making this year so special! Billie and I are looking forward to seeing you at upcoming events.

Yours in the Faith,

Vernon A. Carey, Potentate

PATROL / DIRECTOR’S STAFF Meets the 2nd Wednesday of every month

Circus Time: It’s hard to believe that the 75th Jaffa Circus has come and gone. Once again, the Patrol through the artistic wiz-ardry of our professional spinners, filled the vendor’s boards with

Cotton Candy. As the vendors circulated through the arena to the amazement and delight of young and old alike, the sales were brisk. The Patrol used 650 lbs of sugar and 3750 cones to satisfy the incredible appetites of all those in attendance. With the last cones made, the Patrol cleaned the machines and carefully place

once again awakened to that familiar sound, ‘THE CIRCUS IS COMING, THE CIRCUS IS COMING”! It’s Parade Time: The Patrol had no time to rest, as it is parade time. Time to get the uniforms out of moth balls, check the fit and make those adjustments due to winter hibernation. Then it was off to the cleaners, polish those shoes and get ready to march. Our first parade was the Memorial Day Parade in Juniata and we will be participating in the Potentate’s Caravan in DuBois on June 14. Our parade schedule continues to be finalized before our annual pilgrimage to the hot sands of Virginia Beach and the annual MASA competition. This is sure to be an award winning event filled with fun, fellowship and spirited competition. Our own Past Captain Jerry Graham is in charge of housing this year. I don’t need to tell you which unit will be getting the best rooms. Thanks Jerry, I want mine with an ocean view, balcony and no wake up calls! Paper Crusade: The Patrol was well represented manning the familiar Red Fez Box and handing out information on our hospi-tals at our annual Paper Crusade. To be a part of this great phi-lanthropy is an honor and why we say, “We march so others might walk”! I leave you with this final thought: “I am not sure exactly what Heaven will be like. But I do know that when we die and it comes the time for God to judge us. He will not ask, “How many good things have you done in your life?” Rather He will ask, “How much love did you put into what you did?” -Mother Teresa. Mel Woomer, Secretary

Plan now to be part of the group to visit the Philadelphia Hospital for the Expanded Board Meeting on June 19, 2014.

It will be a very enlightening day with speakers from various departments of the hospital. The Expanded Board Days is the best time to visit the hospital.

Our own Dr. Jack Rocco has been tasked with organizing the event and hopes Jaffa will have a great turn out to show our support for the hospital.

Don’t miss this informative day! This is what being a Shriner is all about!

A special rate of $30.00 per person for the day’s travel has been arranged through Duane Bor-dell of Raystown Transit. Call the Shrine office at 814-944-4043 to make your reservation.

Cycle CorpsBarrie Wyland, ReporterMeets the 3rd Friday at 7:30 PM New Members Welcome

It is sad to report that the Black Camel came and took one of the Cycle Corps members on Monday, April 28, 2014. Larry Davies will be sadly missed as he was always there when Jaffa needed help.

Since the beginning of 2014 the Jaffa Cycle Corps has had one new member, Jonathon McNelis from Phil-lipsburg, PA. Welcome aboard.

Thanks to all the members who helped make the cotton candy. If you could not help out at the Circus this year, you missed some good fellowship.

With the Spring Ceremonial in the past, if you know of any new noble who would like to join the Cycle Corps, show them around and make sure they turn in an application.

The Cycle Corps has a nice group of members and guests going to M.A.S.A. this year. Hope the mem-bers going have as much fun as they did last year. Every-one please have a safe trip.

To any member of Jaffa, the Cycle Corps would like to invite you to join the Cycle Corps. We ride in pa-rades, park cars for numerous events held at Jaffa and just have fun and good fellowship. We ride 2005 (black in color) or newer 250 Honda Rebels or Honda CT 70 (red in color). The main reason we changed to the newer bikes is because the CT 70’s were getting hard to find. If any re-tired riding member has a CT 70 or a 250 Rebel and they are not riding it, please contact an officer as one of the new members would like to talk to you about buying it.

Also a special thank you to all the members who have taken time from their families to help with parking and any of the other activities that the Cycle Corps does at Jaffa. We do this so Jaffa will shine and the children will be able to get the help they need at our Shrine Hospi-tals. The Cycle Corps members have fun doing these activities. This is the main goal of the Shriner’s.

If any member knows of a Cycle Corps member who is sick or in the hospital, please let one of the officers know.

Our meetings are held every 3rd Friday at 7:30PM in the Cycle Corps Room.

George Knott - Reporter

The Corps meets Wednesday eve-nings at the Shrine Center

Greetings from the “City Desk” where this reporter is trying to find his way out from under a huge pile of suggest-ed news items that have been submit-

ted by others for inclusion in this article. Upon diligent in-quiry about the subject matter in these news items I select-ed only two that warrant consideration if there is enough time and space and I think there will be at the end of this article.

This has been a busy past couple months for your Drum Corps. The Potentates Reception was a very enjoyable evening and as is the custom the Drum Corps escorted Ill. Potentate Vern Carey and his Lady Billie from the floor. Thank you Ill. Potentate Vern for asking the corps to escort you and Billie.

As usual the Jaffa Shrine Circus was a very successful ac-tivity event and the information shared with this Scribe indi-cated over 2,000 more school children were entertained this year than last year. The Circus Daddy program is do-ing well. “Sno Cone” sales were about the same as last year. When you consider the cold temperature during cir-cus week you would expect sales to be a little less. Drum Corps Sno-Cone Chairman “COOL HAND JOHNSON” expressed his thanks to all who worked the concession and helped make this another successful Drum Corps project. I was told that the usual banter and good natured insults were being aired and this made this activity a harmonious occasion with comradeship and working for a purpose the ultimate goal. “KUDOS “ to a hard working unit.

The Vera Bradley Bingo project was again a successful venture with an attendance slightly below last year but with a high degree of enthusiasm among the workers as well as the bingo players. This is a great activity in support of Jaffa Shrine and Shriners Hospitals for Children and this is what makes the effort worthwhile. There is considerable time required in preparation for this activity and the members and their ladies did as great job with the prizes, setting up the hall, meal preparation and clean up. Chairman Tim

Plunket and Lady Sara express their “sincere appreciation” to all who assisted in the project with a special mention of thanks to members of the Divan and Mounted Patrol. It is great when we all work together for a common cause.

DRUM CORPS KIDS: Your Scribe had the pleasure of meeting two Drum Corps Kids at the Bingo Game. They being Alexa Harding (Shriners Hospital Kid) and Jessie Harris (A kid who wants a bird dog). You will remember that I have mentioned them in past issues. Both are fine young ladies and were not reluctant when I asked if they were up to an interview. During my interview with Alexa she said that she was recovering from her surgery at Shriners Hos-pital and was back in school full time and has started her dancing on a limited schedule. We wish her continued suc-cess in her recovery and will keep her in our thoughts and prayers.

The second interview was with Jessie and when I asked her how school was going, the first thing she said was “UNCLE GEORGE – are you going to get me a bird dog”? My immediate reply was negative in a very soft and kind tone because I suspected that Jess might be delusional. If I did get her a dog her mom and dad would have me com-mitted. I immediately changed the subject to fishing and the conversation seemed to flow in that direction at a nor-mal pace. Just as the interview concluded the dog issue came up again and she did have a valid argument but I thought it best to suggest that she get her “ducks” in a row and talk to AUNT BRENDA. I would like to help the young lady but I think it wise for me to circumvent the issue and let someone else address the challenge.

THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY!! You should Aspire to In-spire before you Expire, and frustration is described as : Trying to find your glasses without your glasses. Been there????

MISS DRUMBEAT: No news – What’s going on??

Time to get this copy to the “in house” proof reader so as to be assured that my bowl will be full of ”Wheaties” in the morning.

I can hear the Corps coming up the street reminding every-

one that “WE MARCH TO HELP KIDS WALK”.

Jaffa 75th Annual Shrine Circus has come and gone. What a great time had by all. We had lots of help most days and the Lil' Vettes Circus Chairman would like to thank everyone

who came out to lend a hand . We had some new mem-bers working the circus for the first time this year Steve Shuey and Lady Ashley and Dick Mort and Lady Lin-da. Also helping out were the Somerset County Shrine Club members, Paul, Barry, Bill and Dave and our friends from Blairsville, Brady and Ross and our 90 something years young member Joe Prola , who sure knows how to move the merchandise. Also, as always, our special friend "hat lady" Connie Jarrett was alot of fun and we ap-preciate her help each year. Two folks that were unable to attend this year were Joyce Wagner and Vaughn Rear-ick. We missed them both very much and hope to see them again soon. The show appeared to be a hit and John Campbell, Circus Chairman, seemed to have everything under control. We heard many good comments about the circus acts and how good the concessions were .... as well as being reasonably priced. Jaffa does know how to put on a circus.

The last show of the week our Potentate, and Lil' Vette member, Vernon Carey and I decided to have our faces painted. Think we looked pretty good! Potentate Vern Carey, Assistant Rabban Miles "Ken" Cos-tello and Lil' Vette Member Bob Mitchell also decided it was time for an adventure and took an elephant ride. It was overheard that was one to scratch off the bucket list! It is a long, sometimes exhausting week, with many of our members working all 15 shows, but when it is all over it doesn't seem so bad .... sore feet feel better in a few days! Parade season will be upon us and by the time this is pub-lished we will have already participated in the Juniata Me-morial Day Parade and the Dubois Caravan will be coming up. Hope to have a great turnout for both. ..... and it's not to early to be thinking about attending MASA, September will be here before you know it! ......... see you all down the road. Jim "Spanky" Edwards

Yes, it is finally time for a little sunshine. We had an excellent day at the Circus

and some of our guys were there almost every day. The kids seem to enjoy themselves more every year.

Our Club has been pretty busy the last while back. In early April, we turned over 1/2 dozen barrels of can tabs to Krentzman Salvage in DuBois and to-taled $468 to be donated to Erie Hospital. Noble Rick Dusch donated the lions’ share of those, and our thanks goes out to Rick for that effort.

On April 3rd, we met with Noble Joe Palumbo who is a Trustee with the A.J. and Sigismunda Charitable Trust Fund. He presented a check in the amount of $92,759 to Potentate Vern Carey. Also in attend-ance were Dick Brown, our Hospital Crusade Chair-man, Steve McCully, John Ortz, Ron Ferguson, Jim Jackson, and Ed Brubaker representing our Club.

On April 26th, there was a fundraiser at the Ridge-way Elks to raise money for the Cincinnati and Erie Hospitals by the Mother of a patient our Roadrun-ners have been transporting.

On April 27th, a benefit spaghetti dinner was held at the Fort Worth Restaurant in DuBois to help with costs for a boy needing neck surgery at the Philadel-phia Shriner’s Hospital on May 22. We also are in the planning stages for a fundraiser with Pizza Hut in Dubois. We have our sites in order for the Paper Drive June 6 & 7 and have the per-sonnel in place for that job. We are also ready for our Caravan on June 14. We hope for a great turnout and much better weather than the last time.

At our meeting on April 22, Development and Donor Relations Representative Rick Liebel of Erie presented a very informative program on a new Digital Radiology project at Erie, a 14 mil-lion dollar bequeathment from a Noble at Tadmor Shrine in Akron, Ohio, and several other updates.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the members of our Divan and other Clubs for attending our meetings. It is always great to see these fellow Nobles. Well, Bev is waving her Honey-Do list at me so I must move on.

Respectfully submitted, Ron Ferguson, Secretary

Time has really passed from the ending of the Jaffa Hospital Crusade for 2013 and now it is time to think about your Hospital Crusade for 2014. Ill Potentate Vernon A. Carey chose the week-end of Friday May 30, and Saturday May 31 and it went very well. Once again I would like to Thank all who helped this year it make it work. If you are a chairman and could not reserve those dates, for any reason, it is not a big problem. Here is an example when the Jaffa Motor Corp went to check that date at the Altoona Walmart store it was already taken and so they saved another date which is Friday June 20 and Saturday June 21, 2014. We are ok to collect from the beginning of April thru end of August 2014 for it to be counted on the 2014 year’s figures. Remember Nobles, the Hospital Paper Crusade is not just a fund raiser, but chance to inform non Shrine about our Hospitals and care we give the Kids.

I was at the DuBois Shrine on the 18th of March and they have already received some very large checks from some a Trust Fund in their area. Also on April 19th Somerset Shrine club got a check for the Somerset Eagles. There are pictures for both of those Clubs in this Journal. If your Unit or Club receives a large check like these two. Please contact the Recorder’s, which we will get a picture of it and put it in the Jaffa Journal. Don’t forget to also put one in your local newspaper the Shrine needs all the advertising we can get.

We have many posters left over from last year. I have ordered

labels to put on those posters and anyone with a Smart Phone can scan the little QR Code on the label. The QR Code is like a square barcode and links the phone to Shrine International Hospi-tal websites. The website shows information about all of our Hos-

tion site.

So Nobles when your local chairmen contract you to help, please try your very best to work together and make this another great year for Jaffa Shrine and a better life for our Kids.

I am proud to say I am a Jaffa Shriner. Yours in the Faith, Richard G. (Brownie) Brown, Hospital Paper Crusade Chairman.

To become a Circus Daddy, a Shriner must donate at least $20. This year each Circus Daddy received a special ribbon to wear. Contact Foster Snively, PP for more information regard-ing the Circus Daddy program.

An Email of THANKS from a circus patron:

My niece took her son to the circus and he loved it again (he is only 2 years old). My niece was sur-prised at the cost of the refreshments.

She was shocked that everything was only two dollars. I know that a lot of school children from low

income families go to the circus and I am so

happy that most of them can afford a

treat. Please thank the

Shriners for thinking about the low income

families.

This email was received by one of our clowns & thought it was a nice note of thanks to the Jaffa Shriners.

What’s New in Erie! Shriners Hospitals for Children® Erie, PA An Update for our Temple Affiliates

June 2014

Mary Jane Antoon Selected to Lead Shriners Hospitals for Children – Erie Mary Jane Antoon, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, FACHE, Director of Operations for Shriners Hospitals for Children – Erie Ambulatory Surgery Center and Outpatient Specialty Care Center, has been named the new administrative leader of the facility effective June 1. She will replace Charles R. Walczak who has been named Executive Director of Erie Homes for Children and Adults in Erie. Antoon came to Shriners Hospitals for Children –Erie in 2002 as the Director of Patient Care Services. In that role, she was instrumental in carrying out the facility’s transformation from an inpatient hospital to a multi-faceted ambulatory facility. She was named Director of Operations at Shriners Hospitals – Erie facility in 2013, the title she will maintain as Erie’s new leader. A Fellow and Board Certified Healthcare Executive in the American College of Healthcare Executives, Antoon received her BSN degree, Magna Cum Laude, from Villa Maria College and her MSN degree in nursing administration, with distinction, from Villa Maria College of Gannon University. She is also Board Certified as a Nurse Executive, Advanced by the American Nurs-es Credentialing Center. Prior to joining the Shriners Hospitals – Erie staff, she held several nursing leadership positions at Hamot Medical Cen-ter, including serving as Nurse Manager of the Surgical Intensive Care, Heart and Medical Cardiac Intensive Care units. Her professional memberships include the American College of Healthcare Executives, American Organization of Nurse Executives and Sigma Theta Tau. Antoon currently serves as the treasurer of the Board of Directors for the Bradley H. Foulk Children’s Advocacy Center of Erie County.

Everyone Invited to Erie Community Day on June 1 Mark your calendars for Sunday, June 1, and plan on being in Erie that day. June 1 is the date for this year’s Communi-ty Open House at Shriners Hospitals for Children® - Erie Ambu-latory Surgery Center and Outpatient Specialty Care Center. As in past years, there will be many activities including tours of the facility, an antique car show, a craft fair and entertainment provid-

ed by musicians from combined Shriners bands. This year’s Community Open House will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the facility grounds at 1645 W. Eight St., Erie. All events are open to the public at no charge. The Shriners Hospitals Erie facility is one of 22 health care centers in North America providing specialized orthopaedic and burn care for children. The Erie Community Open House is an opportunity for Shriners and the public to tour the facility and learn more about the expert orthopaedic medical care available to children, regardless of their ability to pay. In addition to self-guided tours, which will run from 10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., many other activities are planned. There will be an antique/classic car show in the main parking lot from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., musical entertainment beginning at 11 a.m. and a craft fair. The formal Shriners Ceremony begins at 12:45 p.m. Call (814) 875-8782 for more information.

Fundraising Efforts for New Radiology Equipment Go-ing Well Fundraising efforts for the Erie’s new Digital Radi-ography equipment is going very well. Rick Liebel, devel-opment officer, reports that to date, more than $103,000 has been raised for the project which is estimated to cost about $350,000. Instead of x-ray film, digital radiography uses a digital image capture device. This device allows the radiology technician to immediately see and preview the image. It eliminates costly film processing steps, and the wider dynamic range makes it more forgiving for overand under-exposure. This new equipment offers the ability to apply special image processing techniques that en-hance the overall display of the image. The upgrade to Digital Radiography (Gentle Imaging) is necessary to provide the best diagnostic images at the lowest radi-ation dose achievable, especially for children. This x-ray solution integrates hardware and software tailored to the specific demands of pediatric imaging. Shrine temples, clubs and units are invited to help make this project a reality by supporting the Erie facility’s efforts to raise the $350,000 needed to purchase this Gentle Imaging equip-ment.
