Master PlanThe metropolis master plan is part of an overall theme for upper level architecture studios at IIT. The ‘cloud studio’ is any studio intermixing a diverse student group to tackle issues at the city scale with a focus on research and planning.
This studio is the third part in a series looking at a comprehensive new model for Chicago’s downtown neighborhoods, starting west of the downtwon or ‘loop’ and moving east towards the lake.
Our concept for pushing redevlopment of our 6x4 chunk to the west of the loop was simple. Create strong nodes at the underutilized north and south of the site, connecting and moving people between the two along a new cultural axis.

The two strong nodes in the north and south help us turn a “nine to five” office space site into true districts; each with a unique character and feel.
The north is home to a new foods initia-tive driven by the massive influx of new residential population. Gone is the limit-ed fast food and snack culture. The new district ties into and extends the culinary district just west of the site. It is even supported by a trio of schools, culinary institute, and transportation hub. The north is now a vibrant destination around the clock and for any type of activity.
The south is entertainment through and through, including music, boarding, theaters, bars, and night clubs. Highlights include a massive new concert hall in the currently underutilized Union Station. These programs can be seen spilling out and charging up street life. All of which are tied together with invigorating new retail developments at grade. Built around a comprehensive merchandising plan and a new pedestrian experience.

Observatory A set of small group dwellings for pack-inpack-out camping and immersing oneself in the northern lights. Nesteld into the hill the roof becomes a commu-nity space for viewing the aurora borealis. Curved exterior walls of fiber optic con-crete allow the dwellings to act as a light-show of their own both inside and out. Visiually reacting to its habitation on a nightly basis. Each unit is seperated by masonry mass walls with a built in hearth and bunks for building and mainting heat for the cold winter nights. Likewise a recessed passawage between the hill and dwellings provides a sheltered envior-ment for travelling between units and to the lavatory.
