Bob Kuhn’s Marco Polo is the only known fine art painting that the artist completed of this rare species in his lifetime.

The Marco polo sheep are an argali sheep subspecies, native to the mountains of central asia. They are known for their large, spiraling horns. The species are named for thirteenth century explorer Marco polo, who recorded his encounter with the sheep in The Travels of Marco Polo.

Marco Polo was commissioned by a discerning collector to commemorate his successful sheep hunt in the republic of tajikistan.

according to the collector, Kuhn was delighted to paint the subject. He had a keen interest in the species since president roosevelt’s son, an avid sportsman, visited his hometown and gave a presentation on the coveted Marco polo sheep hunts.
