Permanent Improvement Levy ON MARCH 17, 2020: 1.0 Mill Permanent Improvement Levy Renewal Jackson Center Local Schools has a renewal of its 1.0 Mill, Permanent Improvement levy on the March 17th, 2020 Ballot.
(1 “Mill” Is not a $Million Dollars – See question #3 below) Permanent Improvement funds may only be used for capital improvement projects, mainte-nance and repairs of school property and the purchase of certain equipment items expected to last five years or longer. Permanent Improvement funds can also be used for the pur-chase of computers, buses and vans. Ohio law prevents these funds from being used on staff salaries or benefits. Every five years (10 times since initial approval in 1975), voters have been asked to renew this levy. If approved this March, it would be for a “continuing period” and no longer vot-ed on every 5 years. This change allows the district to confidently plan for those items supported by permanent improvement revenue. The questions and answers below should provide additional facts, but if you need more information, please call or email and we’ll provide you the information to make an in-formed decision. Respectfully,
Tony Meyer - Treasurer - Jackson Center Local Schools
O: (937) 596-6053 x105 / C: (937) 441-1739 ________________________________________________________________________________ 1. How much yearly revenue is generated from this 1.0 Mill, Permanent Improvement Levy? The Shelby County Auditor estimates this will generate around $52,650 a year for Jackson Center Schools. 2. Approximately how much does this cost a homeowner? The average monthly cost ranges from about $1.00/month for a home with an appraised value of $50,000, to around $5.50/month for a home with an appraised value of $300,000. 3. Is ‘a mill’ a million dollars? NO! A mill represents one tenth of one percent of the District’s assessed property value. For example: 1.0 mills is 10 cents for each one hundred dollars of tax valuation. (Valuation = total property value in district)
4. Approximately how much does a bus cost and how often are they purchased? Though bus-
es are only 1 item this levy is used for, they are one of the larger, more consistent items purchased. Jackson Center currently has 5 bus routes. Our most recently purchased bus, a 72 passenger, handi-
cap accessible bus, cost $102,000.
From Superintendent Bill Reichert: If you have not been able to attend an event involving our students, I would like to personally invite you and strongly encourage you attend a basketball tournament game, fine arts night, the spring musical “Annie!” or any number of events that happen in the spring. You will be impressed and walk away proud to be a Tiger! The kids are doing a great job in the classroom preparing for their assigned state test(s). Please help them with proper nutrition, sleep and overall good habits as testing time nears. School Safety: As the weather changes and more students walk or ride their bikes, it is a great time to remember that all of us need to slow down and follow all school guidelines at the beginning and end of the school day. All parents dropping off or picking up their students at school need to use the curb lane! Dropping off be-tween cars or in the parking lanes is very dangerous for the students because they cannot always be seen clearly by other drivers. The only exception would be if an adult needs to walk their student to the door. In that case, the children need to stay with that adult. Thank you for continuing to follow these simple guidelines and keep our kids safe. To also help with the safety of our children, the village changed the speed limit on Davis Street and Hamer Street to 20 mph, will be finishing the crosswalk on Davis Street and extending the existing school zones on St. Rt. 274 and St. Rt. 65. Thanks to Chief Wirick, Administrator Metz and the Village crew for making these safety improvements happen.
Enjoy your spring!

2020 Census FAQWhat is the census? The census is a count of every person who lives in the United States and its territories. It happens every 10 years. In early 2020, you will be asked to count everyone who lives in your home as of April 1. Responding to the 2020 Census is a chance to shape your future.
What’s in it for me?
Your responses inform where over $675 billion is distributed each year to communities nationwide for clinics, schools, roads, and more.
Census data gives community leaders vital information to make decisions about building community centers, opening businesses, and planning for the future.
Responding also fulfills your civic duty because it’s mandated by the U.S. Constitution. The United States has counted its population every 10 years since 1790.
Your responses are used to redraw legislative districts and determine the number of seats your state has in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Is my information safe? Your responses to the 2020 Census are safe, secure, and protected by federal law. Your answers can only be used to produce statistics. They cannot be used against you by any government agency or court in any way—not by the FBI, not by the CIA, not by the DHS, and not by ICE.
When can I respond to the census? In early 2020, every household in America will receive a notice to complete the census online, by phone, or by mail. In May, the U.S. Census Bureau will begin following up in person with households that have yet to respond.
What will I be asked? You will be asked a few simple questions, like age, sex, and the number of people who live in your home, including children.
What won’t be asked? The census will never ask for Social Security numbers, bank or credit card numbers, money or donations, or anything related to political parties.

5th Grade UD Basketball Field Trip On December 5th, the 5th graders traveled to the University of Dayton Arena to watch the UD women’s bas-ketball team take on Morehead State University during an 11:00 game. At the event, UD hosted close to 9,000 elementary and middle school students from the Dayton area who participated in an educational math related field trip. The experience was fun, enlightening, and free for our students! While at the game, our students had great seats where some of them experienced a college basketball game
for the first time. The players on the team asked math related basketball questions to our students before the
game, and each student received a packet of math activities to complete after the game, back in the classroom.
What an entertaining day it was for our 5th graders! They didn’t realize how much math was involved in the
game of basketball!
Our First Millionaire of the Year!
Once again, our 4th & 5th Grade students have been challenged to read as many
words as possible. The students then take an AR reading quiz on the book they
have read, and if they pass, the student earns the total word count for that book.
The average chapter book, such as Charlotte’s Web, has 32,000 words. Congratu-
lations to Kyle Burch (5th Grade), our first student to reach the Millionaire status
this year. He has already achieved 1,050,183 words this year! At this rate, when
will he reach the Double Millionaire status? Our Word Count Chart is located in
the Elementary wing, second floor, if you would like to see all of our motivated
readers this year.
Census Coloring Contest - organized & conducted by the Shelby County Complete Count Committee. All students in grades K-3 participated and a winner from each grade was selected. FINE ARTS NIGHT - February 20, 2020
Fine arts students of Jackson Cen-ter Schools showcased their work in the school on February 20th from 6-8pm The exhibition opened with the high school choir singing the national anthem on the stage. There were multiple visual art displays spanning the entire school and multiple stages for performing arts acts. The art work for the Fine Arts Ex-hibition was a culmination of the students’ from art classes taught by Mrs. Sandra Corbet in kinder-garten, first, fourth, fifth, eighth grades and high school visual arts classes. Art work featured a range of mediums, such as paintings, draw-ings, and illustrations, as well as sculptures and three dimensional works. The school’s show choirs, high school choir under the direction of Mrs. Cari Beth Noah, and the jazz band under the direction of Mr. Randy Johnson all performed throughout the night. Individual students also per-formed solos, dramatic monologues, and small group acts during the event. The night wrapped up with the entire cast of “Annie” performing a selection from their upcoming show under the direction of Mrs. Taryn Kinney and Miss Elizabeth Baker. Jackson Center Fine Arts is part of the academic and extra-curricular structure of Jackson Center Schools.
The school’s drama and music programs, will present four per-formances “Annie,” the classic musical on Thursday March 5, at 7 pm Friday, March 6, at 7 pm Saturday, March 7, at 7 pm Sunday, March 8, at 2 pm Advanced tickets are $7, and they are available at the main office beginning February 21. At the door, tickets will be $9. Checks may be made out to Jackson Center Schools
The musical is under the direction of Taryn Kinney, a graduate of Ohio Northern with a degree in Theatre who has directed, choreographed, or acted in numerous productions. This year’s “Annie” continues Jackson Center tradition of bringing excellent performances, impressive sets, and technical panache to the stage. Mrs. Kinney is assisted by our new science teacher Elizabeth Baker who has many years of theatre experience through Minster, Ohio’s “Crescent Players” Community Theatre as an actress, choreographer, stage master, and many other roles. This family-friendly show starts inside the New York City Municipal Orphanage-Girl’s Annex and features a gang of orphans lead by effervescent Annie. After unsuccessfully running away from the horrible Miss Han-nigan, Annie is invited to spend Christmas with Oliver Warbucks, the richest man in the world. Though their relationships starts awkwardly, Annie quickly charms the cold business man who swears to spend his fortune helping Annie find her parents. When Miss Hannigan and her criminal brother Rooster find out, trouble quickly ensues. With blockbuster musical numbers like ‘Hard Knock Life,’ ‘Tomorrow,’ ‘Easy Street,’ and more, this show will bring joy to all audiences. The musical is an extracurricular program of over 60 students supported by drama, music, and music technology departments across the school.

P - Positive Attitude A - Acceptance W - Warmth S - Sharing
Congratulations to our December and January winners!
A drawing for the first half of the year for coupons and two 25.00 gifts cards took place Monday, January 27. A drawing for the second half of the year will occur in May.
The Jackson Center FCCLA is excited to announce that they have purchased a heat press and
have started making screen printed items. So far they have embellished shirts, sweatshirts,
pants, shorts, and even drawstring bags! FCCLA started out screen printing by creating the
shirts to benefit the Colleen Borchers Family. Members of FCCLA love making the items.
Their favorite part of creating these items is seeing the look of amazement on others' faces
when they see what FCCLA has created. Items can be ordered at anytime by contacting the
chapter through email at [email protected] or by calling the school. Order forms can be
picked up at the school or sent home with a student as well. The FCCLA chapter is also happy
to help you create your groups next t-shirt design and shirts. Please see price sheet below for an
idea of what is available.

FCCLA Hosts “Home Sweet Homecoming”
The Jackson Center FCCLA once again held the 2020 Multiple Handicapped Homecoming. Students from Botkins, Anna, and Jackson Center gathered together on January 10, 2020. The students were joined by their buddy from the FCCLA’s T.G.I.F. program. They enjoyed themselves by getting hair and make up done, playing board games, and of course, dancing!
This years homecoming royalty is a group of very special individuals. Prince Cooper Elliottt, King Randy Alan Humphrey, Princess Alenah Berne, Queen Sarah Snider.
Jackson Center FCCLA would like to thank United Way POWER grant committee, Jenny’s Designs, Village
Salon, JC Music Program, Mrs. Sandra Corbet and Split Decision for helping making this event possible.
Friends of All Ages The FCCLA will be delivering a meal and seasonal treats to area com-munity members who may not be able to get out and about during the winter months. The program began in November and will continue through February. In November pumpkin muffins along with a winter survival kit of tissues, chapstick, lotion, and mints were delivered. In December a hot meal along with handmade wreaths were shared. Janu-ary involved homemade chicken noodle soup and a mug with hot choc-olate and marshmallows. A total of 11 community members have been served each month through this project. Please contact the school if you know of any additional community members who would appreciate a warm meal and friendly visit.
Community Appreciation Meal
The FCCLA once again hosted a luncheon in honor of those who serve our communities. Fire, police, rescue, village workers, township trustees, village council members, local health care providers and teachers were invited to join us on Wednesday, February 13 from 10:30am-1:00pm. A total of 92 meals were served to those attending and/or delivered to shut-ins.
Hearts United
The Jackson Center FCCLA has been working to spread awareness and raise
funds for Congenital Heart Defects. This included creating a design and printing
t-shirts with the chapter heat press to help support our very own teacher, Rachel
Borchers, and her baby Colleen who was born with a heart defect. The chapter
hosted a red out at the Jan. 25 HS boys basketball game and on Jan 29 school
wide. All proceeds from the shirt sales will be donated to the family. Flyers were
created at shared at the game along with tips for early detection. The response
was overwhelming and we wish to thank everyone who helped make this project
a success! A total of $1,830 was raised for the family.
Chili Cook-Off On January 31, The Students with Disabilities (SWD) junior high and high school classes attended the Midwest Regional ESC Annual Regional Chili Cook-Off at Upper Scioto Valley School. Both classes prepared delicious chili to present to the judges, with Mrs. Schmiesing’s class winning second place! Seventy students and staff enjoyed visiting with new and old friends, playing basketball, corn hole, Jenga, Uno and more, while enjoying a variety of classroom made chilis, side-dishes and desserts. We want to thank Mrs. Vicki Kipker for her professional advice on preparing tasty recipes, and Mrs. Sharon Peters for driving and having a good time with us.
Express
Fresh Express Stop by Fresh Express to experience the healthy changes we’ve made to some of our most popular menu items! Some changes include reducing the salt and sugar content in our Bites as well as the use of skim milk and light ice cream in our milkshakes. Chips and cookies have been re-moved from the menu completely. These changes were made in an effort to help students make wiser after school snack decisions.
