We get a few missing or found pet classified ads over the course of the year. Dogs and cats alike, found and reported missing. Many are thankfully cancelled before they are ever even printed as the animal or owner is often quickly located. A weekly newsletter is not always the best means for tracking down our furry family members but there are plen- ty of instances where it does work. This is a service we have always offered at no cost and will always continue to do so as long as possible. We appreciate follow ups and cancellations of ads because the pet has returned home. This week, however, we are deeply saddened to find out that Jack, an orange short haired cat, is never coming home. He was found dead, but not attacked by an animal which would be our biggest fear living here on the island, or even hit by a car which would probably be our second biggest fear. Jack was shot dead, deliberately, by a human with a .22 rifle. We spoke with Ginette, one of Jack’s owners, who along with her husband are obviously very upset. Jack came from a loving home with a family who provided for all his needs. He was microchipped and had his shots for fleas and ticks and had frequent vet checkups. They fostered him and his mom when he was just 7 days old and then adopted him. He was well taken care of. While an ad was placed in the Island Clippings looking for Jack, his family also placed flyers in various places in Richards Landing and placed ads in other publications. They did everything they could to ensure his safe return home. This is not about the person who shot him or to seek them out – as this is something best han- dled by law enforcement, but rather a warning that anything could happen to your pets. Sometimes they do get out, get spooked, or we just let them out to play assuming they will be safe. Anything could happen. It was less than a year ago that On- tario increased penalties for animal abuse. If you witness anything, please report it. Generally speaking St. Joseph Island is one of the safest places to let your pets out. Again, we are pub- lishing this story not to seek out who did this, but rather to warn other pet owners of a danger you wouldn’t normally believe is out there. You really wouldn’t think something like this would happen here (on B Line), but it did. RIP Jack. Melanoplus bivittatus, or the two striped grass-hopper, is a common species of grasshopper in North America and numerous in the Canadian prairies. These days they appear to be everywhere, at least around our house.

They are large and their two stripes down their body and along their wing tips make them easy to spot alongside the road. Nymphs can change dif-ferent colours and patterns as they molt through-out their lifespan. They are considered a pest as they eat farm crops. The eat alfalfa, corn, lentil, barley, wheat and other grain plants along with the weeds that border fields. They tend to eat all parts of the plants, including the reproductive parts of the plants such as the flowers and sepals which will most likely cause the plant to be reseeded the following year.

When there is little food, the grasshoppers will resort to cannibalism. They rest on top of the veg-etation at night until the sun rises and heats their body temperature up. They gather in numbers to migrate to new vegetation and swarms can some-times be spot-ted above fields.

Hard to believe we are halfway through August already. Life seems to be paused but at the same time the days are blurring together. Visitors have been dropping in but it is definitely quieter than previous years. Throughout the summer I have been working on projects that I had started a while back and was not able to finish before the end of the season, and I have started other ambitious proj-ects while I have the time. Recently, I have been combing through our ever growing archives room. Something that caught my eye, well to be honest a lot catches my eye and that is why these projects take so long. Anyhow, I came across numerous poems and even a song written about our Island. Thought I’d share this poem.

In Old St JoeWhen cold winter winds are blowing, My thoughts in fancy flow To my old home in the Northland, To the Isle of St Joe.To the log house in the clearin’Sheltered by a lonesome pine, And the frozen creek now silent. Waiting for the summer time, I can see the rifle hanging On its pegs above the stair, The boot jack, sled and snowshoes,Always kept in good repair. There’s the old tin pail and basin, And the sharpened cross cut saw, And the traps of steel that often, Held a muskrat in its jaws.See the windows decoratedby Jack Frost’s chilly hand, And the falling snow so gentlySpreads its beauty o’er the land.I can hear my mother singingTo the baby-soft and low, While without-the axe is ringing To my father’s sturdy blow.Days of trial, days of danger, Made the place to them seem dear,For home means more than shelter, To the old time pioneer.Through the years the picture haunts me,And again I’d like to goWhere the spruce and pine are waving,And the fragrant cedars grow.So again tonight in fancy, as I watch the drifting snowI’m just a little boy again--Way up in Old St Joe.

Herbert J Hawthorne, former resident of Milford Haven. Written in memory of St Joseph Island where he spent his earliest years.

BYTHE CORPORATION OF THE TOWNSHIP OF HILTON

TAKE NOTICE that the Council of the Corporation of the Township of Hilton, on the 5th day of August, 2020, passed By-Law No. 1270-20 under Section 34 of the Planning Act.

AND TAKE NOTICE that any person or agency may appeal to the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal in respect of the by-law by filing with the Clerk of the Corporation of the Township of Hilton not later than the 9th day of September, 2020, a notice of appeal setting out the reasons for the appeal.

Only individuals, corporations and public bodies may appeal a zoning by-law to the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal. A notice of appeal may not be filed by an unincorporated association or group. The purpose and effect of the by-law is to amend Section 4 – General Provisions of the original Zoning By-law No. 1025-11 by defining Shipping Containers and adding Section 4.1.3 “Shipping Containers” which allows shipping containers as a permitted use for storage purposes only in Zones: Rural (RU); General Commercial (GC); Highway Commercial (HC); Business Park (BP); Major Recreation (MR); Rural Industrial (MI); Extractive Industrial (MX) and Waste Disposal (WD) subject to minimum setback and use provisions.

The lands to be affected by this amendment include all properties within the geographic boundaries of the Township of Hilton.

A copy of the by-law is available for inspection at the Hilton Township Municipal Office, 2983 Base Line, Hilton Beach, Ontario, P0R 1G0.

Dated at the Township of Hilton this 20th day of August, 2020.
