We’ve all met people who exudes excellence. They are the colleagues who always exceed expectations and never compromise on delivering high quality work. They are also the students who will re-do an already finished school project from scratch

even if it means pulling an all-nighter because they didn’t think the work was good enough.

One thing that high achievers universally do is that they strive for excellence. Everything they touch turns to gold. Not only do we have confidence in them delivering great work, but they are also a driving force to elevate the game for everyone else on the team.

As educators and parents, we wish to endow our children with excellence as one of their values. However, as well-known author Ralph Marston noted, excellence is not a skill; it is an attitude. It is something that cannot be learned, but instead is something that’s innate within us. While you can develop this attitude over time, like faith it cannot be faked. Either you have it or you don’t.

As a school there are many things that we do to help cultivate excellence as one of our students’ core values, such as our environment which should be aesthetically appealing, thoughtful, and reflects quality. We also need to set high expectations as a norm and reject sloppy work. Finally, we should also develop growth mindset among our students to make it a habit to look for areas they can improve on.

I’d like to leave with two additional thoughts on excellence. It shouldn’t be the peak performance that we value, but the distance travelled from the starting point. There is also a risk in confusing perfection with excellence.

Sincerely,

I am honored to be serving in the position of Head of Schools for Daystar Academy. Over the past five months it has been incredibly heartening to observe

the dedication of Daystar’s faculty, staff, student, and parent communities. Because of this dedication, students are experiencing strong academic achievement and are happy and engaged learners in their classrooms. This success stems from a true partnership between home and school.

My role as a Head of Schools is unique compared to others’ roles at Daystar Academy. I must provide a clear vision, formulate system goals, liaise with the Board and CEO, and provide leadership from behind the scenes. It is wonderful and valuable work that I thoroughly enjoy and do with enthusiasm.

Those who have worked in school systems know that the work of school improvement is never finished. While Daystar has grown both in size and its organizational development over the past few years, there is always room for continued growth. After nearly six months at Daystar, a few key areas have stood out as areas in need of improvement and these will be my focus for this school year. First and foremost, I will support continued development in ensuring a positive school environment for our students and their families. Schools need to be safe, comfortable and encouraging places for learning and growing to occur. I believe that Daystar’s Core Values reflect both moral character and performance. We will continue to intentionally develop these attributes in our lessons and reinforce them through both classroom and extra-curricular activities and practices. I am

committed to supporting faculty and staff in achieving this outcome, especially as we continue to develop an academically and character strong secondary program.

Secondly, I believe it is important that all stakeholders embrace the mission of giving our students the best education within our resources. Educating all students is challenging and it takes strong faculty and staff to provide all students the level of education that prepares them for the future. Each child is different and will have a wide range of career aspirations, and we intend to provide the foundation for them to be successful.

Daystar is an amazing community with supportive parents and dedicated employees who are working hard to continually improve the services that we provide to all students. Teachers are engaging students in experiences of a lifetime and we are moving forward and going “above and beyond” to prepare our students for future success.

Finally, thank you to all for welcoming me into your community, I very much appreciate it. Here’s wishing everyone a wonderful holiday season.

Dear Daystar Community,

IN THE NEWS

On Sunday, September 22nd, Beigao campus hosted its first ever “Book Exchange Fair” which was an amazing collaboration between

the school and StarParents. Altogether, 2921 books were collected prior to the event. Around 250 families attended the fair, exchanging close to 1600 books!

For the remaining books, we donated 1225 children’s books to Lai Lian Elementary School of Lianghe County, De Hong Zhou of Yunnan Province so that we can help them build a school library. The rest of the books were donated to Roundabout Charity Shop.

During the fair, students and parents also enjoyed the bookmark making, workshop of how to make good of use of library, how to appreciate poetry and etc.

It was a wonderful event for all!

ELC Gets in Touch With Nature and Art!

Learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom.

On October 10th, the Early Learning Center of Daystar Academy visited one of the biggest farms in Chaoyang District! During this field trip, children were excited to pull out turnips and carrots, dig for sweet potatoes, and pick ears of corn with their own hands. Working hand-in-hand with their classmates in this beautiful autumn day filled the children with immense joy.

On November 12th, graduating students of Early Learning Center started an arts experiential trip by visiting Song Art Museum. Listening to the teacher’s introduction and appreciating art works, students experienced all sorts of arts expression. The students had a wonderful time!

Learning & Growing from Challenges

On October 26th, Daystar Secondary School Debate Team attended the annual “Zongheng Cup” International School Chinese Debate

Tournament. They competed against 20 teams from all over the world in the grade 6-8 section. We might not have similar standpoints or strategies, but we share the same goal – “feel the power and fun of debating”.

Our Daystar students encountered challenges but also learned greatly from the experience. After the tournament, our students have not only picked up new oratory skills and strategies, they also gained expression skills and the confidence to attend large competitions in the future. In addition, Daystar students greatly enjoyed meeting their peers from other international schools. They competed yet also learned from each other. Looking forward to other opportunities in the future!

Daystar Unveils Two Premier Programs!

We’re excited to share two wonderful programs for Secondary school! First is the Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies Program from famed

Stanford University! Over the past summer, three Daystar students participated in the program and performed “with flying colors”. Because of that, the program is now allowing Daystar Academy to conduct our own selection process, which has already been completed. Six students will be participating in the program next summer!

“Daystar Academy is the only school in the Chinese Mainland that can select students freely for this project. which reflects how confident Stanford is in our students. says Daniel Williams, Secondary School Principal of Daystar Academy.

Secondly, to better inspire students to spot practical problems and use interdisciplinary knowledge to find solutions, Daystar Academy has become the pilot school in China to introduce the High Resolves program. High Resolves was co-founded by Harvard graduate Mehrdad Baghai, and Roya Baghai. Based in Australia, High Resolves empowers young people to raise awareness and inspire change on a social issue they are passionate

about. It has been successfully implemented in hundreds of schools in multiple countries. The program helps team up students to focus on practical problems and solutions, and helps students develop and consolidate the skills of critical thinking, coordination and communication.

Marking Harvesting Season the Daystar Way!

Autumn is a wonderful season in Beijing, with the blue sky that stretches into infinity and the leaves turning yellow and red. Autumn also represents

harvesting season, with many people marking this important occasion, and Daystar Sanlitun and Beigao campuses were no exception. After careful planning and preparation by the staff and parent volunteers, the 2 campuses were all spruced up and ready for the annual Harvest Festival on October 19th and November 1st repectively.

Sanlitun community came together to celebrate and reflect on the bountiful with food, music, arts creation, games and charity book sale. The day was filled with great vigor and laughter.

At Beigao campus, the school buildings were all decked out to mark the harvest season. Ears of wheat, apples, carrots, and pumpkins decorated the corridors and hallways, creating a festive atmosphere. The game booths that lined up the sports field were all autumn-themed. We also had pumpkin-themed games like Pumpkin Memory, Pumpkin Push, Pumpkin Bowling, Pumpkin VS. Scarecrow, etc.

The Harvest Festival is a vivid example of some of Daystar’s core values like Unity, Caring, and Service. Not only the teachers and staff but also parents were involved in the event preparation.

When were you first introduced to Volleyball?

When I was a kid, I watched Moero Attack, a Japanese TV series about volleyball. My parents loved volleyball too. So, that was the first time I realized that volleyball is a collective sport.

Did you ever consider pursuing any other sport

professionally?

At first, my parents wanted me to do some sport for physical exercise, and they thought that volleyball was relatively safe without a lot of risks of collision, and they really loved Chinese women’s volleyball. So, they chose volleyball for me. In addition, I wasn’t very good at sports except volleyball.

When did you decide to pursue volleyball professionally?

It was about in the second year of my junior high school life (eighth grade). I needed to choose between playing volleyball as a professional athlete or continuing my study. I chose to be a professional volleyball player because I preferred volleyball a lot and I really wanted to give it a shot.

What were some of the biggest challenges?

At the beginning, my parents didn’t really support my decision to be a professional player. They wanted me to go to school, go to university, and find a stable job in the future. So, I needed to convince them and kept on fighting in a field even unknown to myself.

How did you stay motivated?

If you love a sport, you will have enough momentum to keep marching ahead. To me, I love the feeling of fighting on the field with everyone else, and striving for the goal with everyone else. And, I also have my own dream on the field.

Who were some of your biggest mentors?

My father was my first and foremost mentor. He had a significant influence on my growing up. After that, each one of my coaches, including coach Lang Ping, became my mentor. They made me have a deeper understanding of volleyball.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

My love and persistence towards volleyball are the source of my inspiration. And, communicating with coaches and teammates can also help me come up with more ideas when I face difficulties.

What were your parents’ roles? How involved were they in your path to an Olympic Gold?

They chose to support me after they understood why I made my choice, and they tried their best to make sure that I could focus on my career, and they also gave me their advice and opinions.

How did it feel when you won that Olympic Gold medal in Rio De Janeiro?

I didn’t give up in the face of hardships, and my efforts finally paid off. When I got on the tallest podium to receive the gold medal, I felt that I was relieved and my dream finally came true. I did what I had always wanted to do.

What were some of your greatest lessons learned from being a professional athlete?

I learned that you must be earnest and dedicated in your daily training. And if you bump into difficulties, the first thing you should think of is how to tackle them and how to keep on fighting. And, I also learned how to control and manage myself, how to coordinate the whole team, to get the best result possible.

Can you please tell us about Hui Foundation?

Hui Foundation is a special foundation I decided to set up after the Olympic Games based on my previous awards. The foundation is aimed to help athletes and coaches who suffer from illnesses and injuries. Because I have experienced it before, I can understand their helplessness. What’s more, after I retired, I expanded the foundation scope, to make it also dedicated to physical education, especially for children in remote areas. I hope that sport can not only make them strong physically, but also mentally.

Where do you hope to see yourself 10, or 20 years from now?

I hope at that time, I could have a fulfilled, free life. And I hope I can inspire a greater potential out of my child, and share my own life experience and ideas with him or her.

MUSIC CORNER

By: Bruce Gremo, Head of Music Department and VOICES Reporter

An Unforgettable Day with Royal College of !

The sounds of music and laughter flooded Daystar Academy’s music classes on Tuesday, November 5th , as the school witnessed an incredible opportunity. We were host to two music workshops given to 27 Elementary School students from Beigao and Sanlitun campuses, and 23 Secondary School (Grades 7 and 8 ) students by the Royal College of

Music (RCM), the famous music conservatory in London.

Students were randomly selected to provide the RCM with a cross section of students. Three RCM teachers - Charlotte Harding, Diana Roberts, and Emma Purslow - conducted the workshops with assistance from Bruce Gremo, Head of the Music Department for Daystar Academy, and music teacher Peggy Meng. Both the morning Elementary School and afternoon Secondary School workshops pursued the following topics in age appropriate ways; “I’m A Musician!” and “Inspiring Musical Creativity, and Crafting Musical Excellence.”

The musicians inspired students to explore various ways of expressing through music and instructed them on how to do graphic notation. Students were introduced to the concept of theme and variation and engaged in group composition based on the ‘Enigma Variation’ by the English composer Edward Elgar.

The elementary students composed pieces of music with the theme of “Valley”, and “Space”. Meanwhile, the secondary students created four pieces of music with “Paris”, “Beijing”, “the Desert”, and “Africa” as their respective themes, which greatly impressed the three visiting musicians!

By all accounts, the process of collaborative and spontaneous composition produced compelling musical results. The RCM faculty expressed how impressed they were with the students’ creativity in solving compositional problems, their sense of rhythm and timing, and their enthusiasm in performance.

We are ever trying to improve our curriculum by offering our students exposure to what happens in music making in the rest of the world. Whether they become conventional performing musicians or not is in some ways incidental. What is most important is that they leave with a sense of joy and wonder at the power music has over us, and a set of inquisitive ears with which to hear the music happening wherever there is sound. Our RCM visitors were most welcome contributors to this end.

MUSIC CORNER

About RCM

The Royal College of Music (RCM) is one of the world’s great conservatoires, training gifted musicians from all over the world for international careers as performers, conductors, composers and educators. Founded in 1882 by the then Prince of Wales (later Edward VII), the RCM has trained some of the most important figures in international music life.

Going ABOVE AND BEYOND for

A t Daystar Academy, we don’t just strive for excellence. We GO ABOVE AND BEYOND in everything we do. Our annual Week for Change is a wonderful example of that intent.

October was an especially exciting and heartwarming week at Daystar Academy. Besides their usual learning, students spent October 14 to 18, marking our annual tradition of “WEEK FOR CHANGE”.

We know that life is not just about academics. Taking action. Creating memories. Making a difference. Some would argue those efforts may be even more important. At Daystar Academy, we do all we can to ensure that our students have an opportunity to not only learn, but practice our key core values of UNITY, RESPECT, CARING, SERVICE and EXCELLENCE. “WEEK FOR CHANGE” truly embodies that, and so much more.

What began as an annual charity run eight years ago to help cancer patients has evolved to become a week-long opportunity to make a difference. Here’s how our students spent a week in October, celebrating “WEEK FOR CHANGE”.

ES SANLITUN CORNER

Homework has always been a topic that can not only strike fear in the heart of a student but can also create undue stress and aggravation for parents. Families and schools often struggle

to find balance for children; more homework causes a heavy burden for students and their families and too little homework means parents will worry that their children aren’t developing strong learning habits. So schools and families are left to wonder: What kind of homework is best? And how much homework is the most appropriate?

At Daystar Academy, we believe that homework should align appropriately with the age characteristics of elementary school students and their brain development. By choosing activities and practices that are suited to our students’ needs, it engages them and motivates them to learn. Because of the focused efforts of the teachers at Daystar Sanlitun, homework has become a process that can bring happiness, pride and joy to students and families. Some students have even made it their New Year’s wish to “finish all the exercises on the Practice Menu every week”(They can choose at least four activities from the eight).

So, what magic is it that makes homework something students look forward to each day?

The

Let’s unlock the mystery….

First, the homework at Daystar Sanlitun is designed in the style of a “menu” and is presented bilingually. The design consists of nine squares containing the required tasks and activities for the students. The tasks cover the areas of Vocabulary, Reading, and Writing both in Chinese and English, as well as Unit of Inquiry and Maths. At the center of the menu there is the required reading assignment for all students. Above all else, we place a strong emphasis on the importance of reading for students. Daily reading in Chinese and English are required of each student as we know that this reading has a positive impact on a child’s academic growth. The students are asked to record their reading through records that they create in their Communication and Practice/Homework Books. This provides a way for the teachers to better get to know a students’ reading interest as well as creating a strong link between home and school.

The other eight tasks on the practice menu are designed using the grade level learning targets that are taught in the classroom and they are intended to allow for application of their learning. This means that a student has already been taught and practiced in class an idea or skill and the homework is designed to allow

them to apply this knowledge outside of the classroom. For example, a phonics exercise from Semester 1 in Grade 1: the learning target was to correctly read the words containing the short vowel “a”. To practice this, the students needed to cut pictures and alphabetical cards relating to the short vowel sound and match them together. This type of exercise is suitable for the students from Grade 1 because often their preferred learning style relates to visual and hands-on activities.

Another great example is when the students in Grade 2 learned the sequence words “First, Second, Then, and Finally” in writing. The students were then asked in the “menu” to learn the cooking process of a favorite dish at home and write it down using the sequence words. Students enjoyed this activity as it allowed them apply the knowledge of sequencing in a real life situation while also working with their family members.

A great example of a Unit of Inquiry menu item is that students were asked to interview their family members and collect information concerning their family traditions and rules. This connected to the Unit of Inquiry central idea “

All societies have traditions, rules, and laws but they differ across cultures. This activity encouraged the

students to express themselves and practice what they learned in daily life but also to connect with their family members on a different level.

In addition to providing real life application of their learning, our practice menu fully encourages our students to become “Empowered Learners”. The menu provides students with a variety of exercises to choose from each week. As students grow, we empower them to plan out their homework and schedule according their interests and strengths. As they move into the upper grades, students in Grade 3 and Grade 4 intentionally mark the desired date of completion on the practice menu, plan the content of daily practice, and finish the self-assessment on the next day. These students are also required to select the appropriate materials to complete the exercises and organize them in their binder. This process strengthens the “self-management” abilities of our students.

Teachers have been surprised to find that students are so motivated by their homework, that these exercises do not seem to fully satisfy the desire of our students to learn and they bring their own “extra” homework inspired by their assigned tasks. For example, many

students often take the initiative to write a daily diary to tell meaningful stories about their experiences on and off campus. Other students give lessons to their parents to share what they learned at school that day. All of these show that if students are given the “right to choose” in the areas of learning content and plan their own time, it can inspire a stronger learning autonomy.

But creative and engaging tasks alone are not what inspires these students. We have found that providing formative feedback from teachers, as well as peers, helps students make continuous progress. Hattie and Timperley say “Feedback is effective when it consists of information about progress, and/or about how to proceed.” Each week, our teachers give descriptive feedback that not only make our students feel proud of their work but also guides them to create their own goals. Feedback from teachers is specific and aimed at helping the students improve, “The reading record is very neat and the content is interesting.” ; “This week you can read stories about great people.” ; “Oh wow!, You included more details here than in the book! Next time, check your notes to make sure all your great details end up in your book”; “Good reading practice! I’d love to see some more of the vocabulary and phonics

ES SANLITUN CORNER

practice.” In addition, peer feedback also facilitates their learning throughout this process. Students are allowed to give each other descriptive feedback which not only helps them have a deeper understanding about their homework but also inspires them to have more ideas and to share their thoughts.

Finally, our approach to homework wouldn’t be successful if the parent community at Daystar Sanlitun was not willing to learn from and be engaged with what is happening at school.

Though this process takes time, we think it’s worth it because every child is unique so why shouldn’t their homework also reflect who they are? The Daystar approach has allowed students to use their own methods of expression (for example, pictures, writing, thinking maps, and comic books) to demonstrate their understanding of what they learned and the result is quite often amazing.

So at the end of it all, what we have found is that the homework isn’t magic at all. It is, in fact, the intentional and collaborative efforts of students, teachers and, of course, parents that have led our students to become

dedicated and inspired in their daily practice. We will continue to grow and learn together and improve our practices so that our students become engaged and empowered learners ready to take on the world.

Frankly speaking, even an adult may not possess all these qualities. Nonetheless, these are what the children at Daystar Academy’s Early Learning Center are trying to learn and practice

every day.

Is that true? Well, parent observations and comments are probably great indications.

Daystar Academy’s Early Learning Center offers the Montessori Program and provides various opportunities to children to develop their abilities in a prepared environment. Recently, the Early Learning Center had a parent-observation day. Parents were invited to observe how their children behaved, and recorded it on paper as a precious memory of their child’s growth. We have selected a few passages to share with you:

ELC CORNER

Parent comment from Casa A

“Within the 45 minutes of observation, I could see that students used the teaching aids in an orderly manner and cooperated with each other with politeness. They showed respect to teachers, classmates, and the environment. They know what they’re doing and took the initiative to do their work rather than waiting for the teachers to urge them to do so. And when students showcased their work to their teachers, the teachers listened and observed with great attention.”

Parent comment from Casa B

“A girl who didn’t know me introduced her work to me with great enthusiasm and confidence, and she tidied up by herself when she was done. Teachers gave children assignments according to their ages. For example, they arranged math assignments for graduates, who are getting ready to become elementary school students. “

Parent comment from Casa C

“At first glance, I thought to myself why are there no teacher lectures for the children? Maybe they had too much freedom. But after I watched for a few minutes, I found with surprise that everyone in the classroom seemed to follow a certain rule. The whole class was quite orderly. There were students drinking water, wiping the glass, doing math, writing, painting and engaged in the Chinese paper-cutting art. They weren’t distracted by my presence at all. A student even offered me a glass of water, and another one brought me a plate of fruits later on. I was touched bythese acts.”

Parent comment from Casa D

“A child offered me a glass of water, and another child gave me a paper-cutting he made and wanted me to write down what I wanted on the back of the paper. All around me, there were many kind greetings and smiles. My son showed me the work that he enjoys the most, and he appeared absorbed, concentrated and adept during this process. That day was my 35th birthday. I got a lot of beautiful paper-cutting and warm smiles from the children, and their passion and sense of order showed how dedicated the teachers and the school are…”

The four CASA classes at Daystar Academy’s Early Learning Center offer children ages 3-6 the opportunities to develop their abilities by arranging age-appropriate activities, or ‘work’, in the classrooms and encouraging them to interact with specific learning materials and work with each other. Here at Daystar Academy, each child enjoys the freedom of exploring and becoming the person that he/she is meant to become. They can pursue their dreams and be prepared for their future. This may be why Daystar Academy’s Early Learning Center is so popular among all the parents.

Book Club: A Fun Way to Delve Deep Into A Unit of Inquiry

At Daystar Academy, we are constantly searching for ways to enrich our students’ learning experience. In our Elementary program, we cover six Units of Inquiry which allow our

students to connect their studies to real life situation. This helps make learning relevant AND fun at the same time. Here’s one example today.

At Beigao campus, Book Club in the fifth grade is a chance for students to have the shared experience of reading an excellent book. Instead of reading one novel as a grade, students are grouped together and read a book chosen for that group. We make sure to choose books that are appropriate for the readers and also tie deeply to our transdisciplinary theme. Our current unit is about human migration. Our Central Idea is Human migration is a response to challenges, risks, and opportunities. All the books that students are reading relate to this theme and to the central idea.

Students have been assigned the page numbers they need to read each week, along with a specific and

rotating job to do. For example, the Discussion Director is responsible for keeping discussions meaningful and on track. He (or she!) writes open-ended questions to stimulate the groups thinking. He also determines when the other students in the group will perform their roles. The Vocabulary Enricher finds ways to deepen understanding of new words found in the text, along with ways to connect to words and ideas they already know. The Illustrator makes sketches to connect events, settings, and characters in the book to events in real life, in another book they have read, or to something happening in their own lives.

Students do the reading and perform their jobs as homework. In the classroom, students bring everything together and share their work and all their thinking in groups of their peers.

Book club is a wonderful way for students to both work independently and come together to collaborate in their understanding of an outstanding text. Plus it’s fun!

Student Reflections:

“It’s important that everyone comes prepared,

otherwise it’s not as fun. We like how we always get

to switch our roles as well.”

“We like this unit. We’re reading “Home of the Brave”

now, about a Sudanese boy who lost his father and

brother, and is looking for his mom, which is kind of

sad. It’s cool how we can read a book about migration

because it helps us understand even better the

struggles of migration.”

“Our favorite part is the discussion. It’s fun to hear

others’ opinions about the book, because they might

see something that you didn’t. It’s almost like we are

reading the book five times. We read the book, but we

also see how other members see the book. ”

The Value of TransdisciplinaryCollaboration

Learning can take many forms. And when learning becomes a true collaboration between subjects, it provides an opportunity for our students to further absorb and express that particular unit

of study, and further create a long-lasting impression.

Recently our grade nine students had that experience. Students wrote Chinese poems in their Chinese Language Arts class, some truly “digging deep” and writing truly

insightful poems. They then had a chance to draw a picture to accompany their poems in their Visual Arts Class, using “whimsical lines” inspired by the artist Shel Silverstein. Meanwhile, our grade seven students wrote English stories in their English language and literature class, which they then converted into poems and also accompanied with artwork. Below are reflections from the two teachers, and samples of the students works.

Eira Shi,9th Grade

In our first unit of Chinese language Arts for grade nine students, we studied how to appreciate and write poems. It was the first time for our grade nine students to learn a full poem unit. Our goal was to learn how to analyze images and artistic conceptions, in order to feel the “power of poetry”, and to use common images to create their own artistic conceptions to convey emotions and feelings.

We started form the simplest poems and images – those from textbooks compiled by Ministry of Education, to learn how to identify and analyze images. Students read Selected Poems of Ai Qing and Selected Poems of Rabindranath Tagore, and further probed into poems of Ai Qing.

“Writing poems enables me to feel the charm of poetry”, say the students. In the poem creation

lesson, they imitated and then tried to write something of their own. As a result, they gradually came up with a unique “insight” on poem creation, and put it into practice.

We saw children who seldom talk used poems to express their feelings – confusion, aloneness and emotions that they choose to hide deep inside. All these constitute their path of growth.

A student, normally more fond of sciences surprised me the most. Right at the beginning of the unit, I worried that he might not be able to write any poem. To my surprise, my concern was wiped clean by his phrase “night is like an ink bottle, broken”. Children are like a treasure trove, and you never know what you may discover.

Reflections from Carrie Liu MYP Chinese Language and Literature teacher

Reflections from Anna ZhuMiddle School Visual Arts Teacher

“A drawing is simply a line going for a walk.”- Paul Klee

I’m so excited for this opportunity to be a part of this interdisciplinary project with the Chinese and English language departments. In Visual Arts, students are studying “lines”, which is one of the essential elements of Art. When I learned that both Chinese (grade 9) and English (Grade 7) Language and Literature classes were writing poetry, I immediately thought of the simple yet whimsical line

drawings that accompany the works of Shel Silverstein- a poet I grew up reading and loving. I also recalled the works of the Canadian-Indian poet, Rupi Kaur, who creates simple black and white images to bring emphasis to her already powerful words.

Ms. Carrie Liu, Mr. Nick Grasso and I are all proponents of celebrating student work. And since there was a natural connection between our subjects, we jumped at the chance to merge the learning in all three subjects. We’re so proud of all the work our students put into

their art and poetry. We hope that through this project, students will not only understand art and poetry as joyful and significant ways of expression, but also that sometimes, when the two mediums come together, the result can be something truly extraordinary.

Celebrating A Golden Month of Literacy

October was an especially golden and meaningful month at Daystar Academy. Not only did we celebrate our annual Week for Change, October also marked our popular “Literacy Month”! Various reading initiatives and activities took place at both our Sanlitun and Beigao campuses, highlighting our students’ love for reading. The students enjoyed stories in many creative ways, expressing their love for reading by recording how much they read, sharing and recommending their favorite books. They also met and were inspired by a famous author, and ended the month in a day of fun, dressed in costumes of their favorite book characters.

Reading Deposit Challenge

Students from Daystar Academy Beigao and Sanlitun campuses recorded how much time they spent reading each day. At Beigao campus, students documented their times in reading deposit passbooks and certificates were awarded to students who achieved the targeted reading time. Classes with the highest average reading time were rewarded with MORE books!

Meanwhile at Sanlitun campus, students were encouraged to read a certain amount of time in accordance with their age level. They then received a specially designed button if they reached their goal. After a month of recording their times, we were not surprised to find that there was so much reading being done at both campuses. All of the students were exceptional in calculating their reading times, and each of them enjoyed the friendly competition, with the quality reading time as the ultimate reward.

‘Read Aloud’ Time

All children love being read to, and at Sanlitun they welcomed some wonderful guest readers: Daystar Sanlitun parents! They were invited to come and read aloud some of their favorite stories to their children’s classes. Students loved having their parents on campus reading books to their classes and having the chance to

talk about the books afterwards.

There were even some surprises! For example, Miss Yvonne Horst, English Language Arts teacher at Sanlitun campus, shared a Dutch version of the classic Grimm fairytale from Germany, “The Shoemaker and the Elves” with the grade 5 students at Sanlitun.

Poster Making

“My favorite book is Dog Man”, “My favorite book is “Great China Treasure Hunt””, “My favorite is the Little Pig Baby Series”, “I like suspense novels...”, “Manga books are my favorite...”, “I have read the story written by Tatsuya Miyanishi over and over again, and I still want to read it one more time.”

Everyone has his or her favorite when it comes to reading books. Making posters to recommend books was undoubtedly Beigao students’ favorite part of literacy month. Students were encouraged to recommend and share their favorite book with their classmates by making eye-catching poster for that particular book. They captured the essence of their favorite book on the poster and portrayed vividly the part of the story that touched their heart or impressed them the most. They were very proud of their hand-made posters which were a creative representation and interpretation of the books that they love the most.

The posters displayed on the wall by the Daystar Beigao Library features some of the students’ recommended books. Every day, the poster wall attracts a great deal of students. “I have read this book, too.” “I like this book, too.” “He painted so well!” “What’s this book about?”

King of the Kitchen, The Lord Rabbit, and Little StoneLion, etc. are some of the picture books by Xiong Liang that young readers are very familiar with. So you can imagine students’ excitement and anticipation when informed that Mr. Xiong Liang, an acclaimed writer of picture books would come to Daystar Academy

and share his stories. On October 23rd, Mr. Xiong Liang was warmly welcomed into Daystar Academy Beigao and Sanlitun campuses, to the overwhelming excitement of the students.

Mr. Xiong Liang shared some of his best work with the students, A Battle at Changbanpo, Wusong Fights A Tiger, and the Monsoon Monster, just to name a few. He talked about the creation process of and the idea behind his new book, The Ranger Xiaomu.

The atmosphere during the presentations was sizzling, with lively interaction throughout the whole session which was incredible to watch, especially when the young readers were imitating the voices of the characters in the book. It was very powerful and dramatic. Students came prepared with questions for the author and they couldn’t wait to ask them: “Mr. Xiong Liang, what is your favorite among the many books created by you?” “Mr. Xiong Liang, when you were creating the Ranger Xiaomu, did you really live in the forest? What did you eat every day?”

Afterwards, the children wrote thank you letters, stories, messages and other things they wanted to say to the writer, and the library will make sure to send these to the author.

Authors Visit With Secondary Students

On October 31st, Ma Chuansi, the famous writer for science fiction, and art critic and writer He Jiang also

presented informative lectures to the Secondary School students at Daystar Beigao campus.

Ma Chuansi has created many well-known science fiction novels and won many prestigious awards including the gold medal of the 8th and 9th Global Chinese Science Fiction Nebula Award for Best Children’s Novels, and the special prize of the “White Whale” Original Fantasy Children’s Literature Award. He elaborated and commented on the topic of “The Appreciation and Creation of Science Fiction Literature.”

The Beigao campus also welcomed He Jiang, an art history scholar, writer and art curator the same morning. Her main achievement is to create a style of loose cultural criticism. The fresh and elegant and sharp comment style is unique in the industry. She gave the students a presentation about “History from World Famous Paintings”.

Book Character Day

By the end of October, students had read many fascinating books. Both the Sanlitun and Beigao community dressed up as their favorite book characters to mark the end of a very inspiring and fruitful Literacy Month!

It is not an easy task to cultivate a reading habit but it is definitely worth the effort, because it is an asset that will benefit your whole life. So, what’s the next book you’re going to read?

ATHLETICS CORNER

More resourcesTo inspire students to dig even deeper, Daystar is initiating more and more relevant resources.

This will be the first year volleyball moves forward at Daystar. former player Hui Ruqoi, the Olympic gold medal captain of the 2016 Chinese National team, has made some guest appearances to help train our young athletes. The SS volleyball team will train on Tuesdays and Thursdays with their first games taking place after the holidays.

SS Basketball will continue with coaches from the Wildcats Club running team practices. Wildcats is lead by Coach Nahtral a former collegiate and professional basketball player in USA and China. HS Basketball practices will be on Mondays and Wednesdays with games taking place after the holidays.

This winter season students from the ES and SS will have the opportunity to train on Mondays and Thursdays with Coach world champion Dong Jiong for the Daystar Badminton team. Daystar is partnering with Coach Dong, using his coaching staff and facilities to help prepare our students for future Badminton competitions.

Additionally, Daystar is proactively organizing students to take part in all sorts of competitions so as to offer students more opportunities of exchange and growth. For instance, the Junior International School Athletic Conference and the Beijing Area Sports Exchange are the primary athletic conferences that our school participates in.

While the Beigao campus has been involved with JISAC for over five years, this year the Sanlitun campus has been invited to join as a provisional

member. Both Beigao and Sanlitun competed in Boys and Girls Soccer and Boys and girls Table Tennis this fall. No awards are given in JISAC and scores or records are not kept. This ensures that the students are focused on the positive benefits of sport rather than the results.

“Sports spirit”“We pay attention to the competition itself as well as the results. But they are not the core pursuit of the Daystar sports spirit. What we encourage and celebrate is students’ experience, and the earnest and honest spirit”, says Matt Heyman, Athletic Director and Activities Coordinator of Daystar.

When we were editing this passage, Christopher, PE teacher, specifically shared some details of Daystar girls facing challenges head on the football field with us:

That was a champion-deciding match. The next couple games showed the dedication and determination of the girls as they played a see saw affair that had them tied twice. Although they fell 4-2, Daystar pressured incessantly throughout the second half. The third game had Daystar depleted through injuries. Although they lost 8-0, the Daystar girls missed 10 shots inside the Keystone box, an incredible amount for a team that ended up playing with 6 players with most of those out of position.

In Daystar, score is never the core pursuit of PE education, or academic and art study. Instead, the essence of Daystar study is helping students get experience and reflect on themselves in their school life. In an environment truly suitable for them, they can grow up and get a sense of achievement anytime and anywhere.

At Beigao campus, Parents decorated the gym with handmade decorations.

Staff also enjoyed delicious, mouth-watering roasted turkey with all the trimmings, because yesterday happened to be Thanksgiving Day.

In addition, our students played an integral part in making this year’s Staff Appreciation Luncheon even more special and meaningful.

Our youngest students from Early Learning Center and kindergarten made handicrafts for the table decoration. Elementary students submitted heartwarming videos, and wrote thank-you cards and pasted them on the gift bags. Our secondary students vonlunteered to help at the food station and read self-written poems to our staff.

Every piece of decoration. Every delicious dish. Every piece of video. You could feel the sincerity, heart and effort that went into it.

“In my over 30 years in education, I have never witnessed a parent event like this. I am truly touched by today’s Staff Appreciation Luncheon. Thank you so much to all of our parents for your care, and for this incredible event.” Gaye Rawding, Head of School commented.

“I wish to thank all parent volunteers. They have family and kids to look after. They even asked for leave from work to support our event. These gestures and more, have touched me deeply.” Li Xiang, Starparent Lead Organizer, Staff Appreciation Luncheon said.

“SUPERSTAR” was the theme of Daystar Academy Sanlitun Campus Staff Appreciation Event last Friday afternoon. And it was a heartwarming, unforgettable event.

Weeks had gone into the preparation of every detail by a group of extremely dedicated parents. The result? A gym that had been converted into a beautiful reception area, complete with a red carpet, twinkling lights, and a photo opt location for all of our “SUPERSTARS”!

Delicious refreshments and drinks were also in full display, including not one but TWO turkeys!

Two parent hosts kept the staff entertained, including leading them through three fun games. Peels of laughter could be heard throughout the hall.

But one of the most touching aspects were the student video messages, with students expressing how the teachers and staff have touched their lives. Many students spoke in both English and Chinese, some students played an instrument, some students sang songs, and one student even performed a Mongolian dance. The messages were sincere, and truly touching.

We wold like to thank all of our amazing parents for their effort. You have truly touched us and we are beyond grateful. It’s moments like these, that you know that Daystar Academy is truly special.

Though people join a team for various causes, we have the sense of recognition and belonging mainly because of the harmonious and heart-warming environment in the group.

With this in mind, the Staff Appreciation events organized by the StarParents of Daystar Academy Sanlitun and Beigao campuses are wonderful exampls of what make Daystar Academy so unique.
