History

Jack County's rich history in transportation, agriculture and more is depicted in the mural by Marc Nesbitt on the wall of Brazos Title at the corner of Archer and Main streets. The mural was completed in 2014.

Jack County was approved as an establishment by the Texas Legislature August 27, 1856 out of what was then a larger Cooke County. It was named for broth-ers and patriots in the Texas Revolution, William H. Jack and Patrick C. Jack. Settlers began arriving in the future county the prior year with the first settle-ment established in 1856 being Keechi, according to the Handbook of Texas Online.

Before settlement, the area was a borderland be-tween the Caddo and Comanches. The Butterfield Overland Mail Trail crossed the county and ran from 1856 until 1861, connecting Memphis and St. Louis to San Francisco.

County residents voted 76 to 14 against secession in February 1861. Although the area was untouched by Civil War combat, removal of federal troops resulted in frequent Indian raids with many residents fleeing east. From 1860 to 1870, the population dwindled from 1,000 to 694.

In 1867, the U.S. Army established Fort Richardson on Lost Creek near Jacksboro to protect pioneers against Indian raids. The fort was completed in 1869 and was abandoned in 1878. Mesquiteville was desig-nated the county seat and later renamed Jacksboro.

In May 1871, Jacksboro received national attention for the trial of Kiowa War Chiefs Satanta and Big Tree for the murder of seven teamsters during a raid on Salt Creek Prairie. It was the first trial of natives in a

white man's court. They, along with a third War Chief Satank, were sentenced to be executed in September, but the sentence was commuted to life in prison.

By the mid-1870s, the threat of Indian attack subsid-ed and the population grew rapidly to 9,740 by 1890.

The Chicago, Rock Island and Texas Railway, which reached Jacksboro August 24, 1898 brought addition-al growth and provided access to markets outside the county.

Cattle ranching dominated Jack County’s economy in its early years. By 1890 there were 68,756 cattle in the county. Agribusiness grew rapidly after large-scale farming was introduced in the late 1870s.

The dominant crop in the county’s early years was corn. Cotton was also grown in considerable quanti-ties after 1890.

Jacksboro made its mark in agricultural history when Tom M. Marks, editor of the newspaper and part-time county agent began the Corn Club in 1907 which later became the first Texas 4-H. The Corn Club began with a membership of 111 boys, each receiving a gallon of a new type of corn seed. The first county fair was held in 1908 with 91 boys and 30 men exhibit-ing their corn in addition to 270 other exhibits.

Oil was first discovered in the county near Bryson in 1923, setting off a small boom. Now, in the 21st century, petroleum and gas production, oilfield services, and live-stock are the central elements to the area’s economy.

The City of Jacksboro maintains its own water system — distribu-tion, wastewater treatment and water treatment. Its accomplish-ments include numerous awards for both taste and clarity of its drinking water.

BrysonThe City of Bryson, in western

Jack County, has a population of 539 as of the 2010 census.

The community was first settled in the late 19th century. Original-ly known as Mount Hecla, a post office opened under that name in 1878. Henry Bryson built the area’s first residence, a log cabin, that same year. The community was later renamed after him. This change was officially recognized in 1884, when the local post of-fice took the name Bryson. Hen-ry Bryson went on the serve as county commissioner. Early pio-

neer family names of Bryson were Blount, Chambers, Clayton, Cook, Crumpton, Cullers, Enlow, Epper-son, Henderson, Keyser, Kuyk-endall, McCloud, Moore, Raley, Shanafelt and Vanhooser.

The Chicago, Rock Island and Texas Railway, a subsidiary of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pa-cific Railroad, reached Bryson in the fall of 1902. Although oil had been discovered in Jack County as early as 1898, it wasn’t until the mid-1920s that Bryson be-came an oil processing center for local producers. The result-ing population boom led to the community being known as Jack County’s “second city” (after Jacksboro).

Bryson was incorporated in 1929 and had a population of 641 in the 1930 census. A 1938 oil boom in Bryson saw the population ex-plode with many people forced to live in tents. In 1940, the census dropped back to 806. As oil pro-duction declined, so did the popu-lation.

The low point occurred in 1970, when only 455 people lived within the city limits. During the latter half of the 20th century, Bryson slowly grew to over 500 residents. In 1988, there were seven business-es serving the community. There were reportedly 22 businesses in Bryson as of 2004.

Faith Community Hospital

When it comes to medical ser-vices, the reality is bigger is not always better. In fact, for Jack County residents, Faith Commu-nity Hospital is an important and critical option for healthcare.

Opened in 1958, Faith Community Hospital was a 41-bed medical facili-ty that provided healthcare services for residents of Jack County, Texas. Last Fall, the hospital completed construction on a 75,000 square-foot facility, complete with cafe and, soon to come, a wellness center.

FCH offers a wealth of medi-cal services including: inpatient care, minor surgeries, obstetrics, level IV 24-hour trauma center, ad-vanced radiology services includ-ing CT scanning, outpatient lab, physical therapy, social services, patient education, rural health clinic, and more.

Space is also available for addi-tional parking and medical office buildings in the future. The new campus is also in better compli-ance with requirements for dis-abled patients and visitors.

There are many new services that to benefit residents, such as an obstetrics unit for local deliv-ery of babies. Minor surgical and screening procedures are also be a highlight of the new hospital, as well as on-site mammography screening, expanded room for pri-mary and specialty care clinics, and expanded physical and car-diovascular therapy departments.

“At a time when many rural com-munities are seeing a reduction in healthcare services, we are fortu-nate to be experiencing growth in Jack County,” said Phyliss Elen-burg, president of the FCH Chari-table Founda-tion. “It is im-portant for rural residents to have hospitals nearby to access the es-sential medical services that the community needs and expects.”

“We’re headed

in the right direction,” explained Frank Beaman, CEO of FCH.

A five-member board oversees the facility consisting of Edwina Swan, Mark Maples, Lori McBray-er, Board President Shelley Owen and Larry Norwood. Owen's board seat will be up for election in 2015.

Hospital board elections take place in November with three-year terms.

Outdoor fun

Jack County is full of outdoor activity, as residents enjoy hunt-ing and fishing pretty much year round.

Many folks like to fish at Lake Jacksboro on the north end of the city off State Highway 59. Others enjoy the outdoors at Fort Rich-ardson State Park off US Highway 281 on the south end of town.

Campers can camp at either loca-tion. Those that want to camp at the lake are charged fees if they need electricity or not. There are six electric/water hookups at the lake and a five-night camping limit is enforced. Camping permits at the lake are picked up at the near-by Twin Lakes Activity Center.

Fort site structures include sev-en of the original buildings which have been restored: the post hos-pital; the officer’s quarters (com-manding officer); a powder maga-zine; a morgue; a commissary; a guard house; and a bakery, which baked 600 loaves per day. There are also two replicas: officers’ and enlisted men’s barracks. The offi-cers’ barrack houses the Interpre-tive Center.

Activities include historical study, picnicking, camping, hiking, biking, day-use equestrian, nature

study, wading in the creek (sea-sonal), swimming (accessible via Lost Creek Reservoir State Trail-way or by road), and fishing. For anglers, Quarry Lake is stocked with catfish, bass and trout period-ically during the year. If you plan to swim at the park, read through the swimming safety tips before you come.

Lost Creek Reservoir, the twin to Lake Jacksboro offers camping at Lost Creek Reservoir State Park. The Lost Creek Trailway connects Lost Creek Reservoir with Fort Richardson State Park. The trail-way was funded through the Inter-modal Surface Transportation Effi-

ciency Act, with Texas Parks and Wildlife, the City of Jacksboro and Jack County as partners, sharing in the matching funds for this grant program. It was authorized for construction in 1994. The cost for the trail was $442,000. The grand opening ceremony was held on Na-tional Trails Day, June 6, 1998.

This approximately 10-mile hike, bike and equestrian trail runs adja-cent to Fort Richardson and along Lost Creek, which is the main wa-tershed for the two city lakes. The trail follows scenic Lost Creek and travels the east side of Lake Jacks-boro and Lost Creek Reservoir.

The trail crosses the dam at Lost Creek Reservoir and winds along the west side until it reaches the trailhead. This is a linear trail sys-tem that winds with the terrain and abounds in scenic beauty. It travels through the park with many shaded areas of pecan and oak trees.

Most of the trail travels by the creek or lakes which provide nu-merous opportunities to fish and swim. This is a beautiful trail, abundant also in wildlife and wild-flowers. There is a trailhead at Fort Richardson State Park & Historic Site and a trailhead on Lost Creek Reservoir.

This trail is 10 feet wide and has an improved surface of base mate-rial with a topping of approximate-ly 4 inches of screening materials.

This surface creates a smooth trail for many uses.

Admission is $3 for adults with children 12 and under are free. Stu-dents use the park year round for different field trips. Events happen on a regular basis to provide fam-ily fun for everyone.

Campsites with water, electric-ity and sewer are available at Fort Richardson as are a limited num-ber of cabins that have heat and air conditioning. There is also an outdoor pavilion for larger groups and picnics.

In the brutal summers, the Jacks-boro swimming pool is open. The Jacksboro Community Pool is available for open swim, swim lessons and pool parties, but the most important function it serves is as a place to make great memo-

ries.The pool opens in early June and is

kept open until just before the start of school, usually open in the after-noon Mondays through Saturdays. Swim lessons and water aerobics

are offered through the summer in the mornings and evenings. Private rentals for parties are also available.

The Twin Lakes Park Complex offers playground equipment, a sand volley-ball pit, horseshoe pits and baseball fields, along with access to the lake via shore or boat ramps.

The Gladys Johnson Ritchie Public Library is named for a Jacksboro school teacher who funded its creation.

The library serving Jack Coun-ty is named for Gladys Johnson Ritchie, who was interested in see-ing a new public library in Jacks-boro.

She came to Jacksboro in 1925 as a new graduate from Teacher’s College in Commerce, Texas.

She worked as an elementary teacher and was active in the local library club for many years. One of the main resources for educa-tion that she felt was needed was library.

In 1980, with encouragement from others, Ritchie funded and oversaw the construction of the li-brary. In 1999, she also funded an addition to the main library and remodeled the existing building and the children’s library. She be-lieved in the importance of keep-ing up with the latest technology and encouraged others to do the same.

The Gladys Johnson Ritchie Li-brary is a full-service library offer-ing many services to its patrons including current magazines, inter-

library loan, DVDs, audio books, in-ternet access, a children’s library, meeting room, summer reading program, genealogy section with old newspapers and census on mi-crofilm, local history and more.

housed in one of the oldest houses in Jack County.

According to the museum’s bro-chure, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Coo-per built the home in 1882 from materials freighted in by wagon from Jefferson, Texas. The Coo-pers paid for their home with $20 gold pieces.

The extra-thick walls may be viewed inside where they extend beyond later additions to the house. There are seven rooms with four being the original struc-ture. Native stone chimneys con-structed for the fireplaces in the front rooms are still standing and one fireplace is intact. The once wooden porch has been replaced with concrete and the wooden ta-pered porch post replaced with metal filigree.

When the last owner, Mrs. A.A. (Lottie) Files, died in December 1987, her grandchildren offered to sell the home to the Jacksboro Chamber of Commerce to be used as a permanent site for the Jack County Museum.

This house witnessed the birth of the Corn Club in Texas, later known as the Texas 4-H Club in 1907 when Tom M. Marks was the resident.

Marks was a talented, educated man of many occupations; school The Jack County Museum is staffed entirely by volunteers and is open each

week Thursday through Sunday.

teacher, superintendent, public entertainer, construction engineer for the railroad, farmer, editor of the newspaper and special county agent for Jack County.

While serving as special county agent, he felt there was a great need for new developments in farming methods. After failing to convince the local farmers of new changes, he turned to the youth of the area and organized The Corn Club on September 8, 1907, in Jacksboro.

New types of corn seed were dis-tributed among the membership of 111 boys with each boy receiv-ing one gallon of corn.

The following year, 1908, the first county fair was held with an at-tendance between 1,000 to 2,000 people.

The Corn Club survived and be-came the Texas 4-H Clubs and the legacy of Tom Marks continues to-day. The work he did in the agri-cultural field is recognized by the United States Department of Agri-culture.

Visitors to the museum enjoy the numerous artifacts related to ear-ly life in Jack County, as well as a vast collection of military exhibits, 4-H memorabilia, Jacksboro High School mementoes, along with cemetery records and genealogi-cal records.

On site is a restored 1880s log cabin, a collection of early farm implements and an out-building filled with pioneer life necessities.

Jack County pioneer living comes to life each year the first Saturday in June when visitors travel back in time to the early days of Jack County as they re-live the past and listen to tales of Texas history in and around Jack County during the museum’s Pio-neer Day.
