Junior Achievement of British Columbia has been providing free business education since 1955. We enlist the services of 800 volunteers each year from business communities around the province, to take time out of their busy work-lives and pass along some of their passion about business to our youth. Kids in BC who have participated in a Junior Achievement program are more likely to stay in school, will earn more and are 50% more likely to start a business. We know this because of Boston Consulting Group’s 2011 report on Junior Achievement’s Impact in Canada, which also reported that 75% of Junior Achievers believe JA had a significant impact on their financial literacy and was a critical driver of their work success. Junior Achievement is getting BC youth ready for business in an ever-changing global economy. That’s a positive impact for a lifetime.

What a year! It was filled with excitement and unprecedented accomplishments. Not only are we celebrating the achievement of our highest delivery goals ever, we also moved the needle forward in every aspect of our business, and were overwhelmed by increased commitment from donors, volunteers, the provincial government, community leaders, alumni and teachers.

We hear, from British Columbians, concerns about our province’s economic future and the readiness of our youth to take on important leadership roles. JABC addresses this head-on. We are uniquely positioned to provide students with the courage, leadership and business skills they will need to succeed in a global economy.

Our accomplishments of 2012-13 have set the stage for success. A bold and ambitious new plan to double the number of students we reach by 2018 was approved by the Board of Directors. This plan will extend our reach in communities throughout the province, and pushes us to stretch even higher.

Keeping up with new technologies and staying relevant are critical goals for JA. This past year we improved the delivery of key programs with online enhancements that allow students to access learning activities from anywhere in the province. As we grow, our stakeholders can expect JA to continue to reach out through new channels and program delivery models.

We are proud of the diversity of students we impact. Since 2008, we have nearly tripled the number of aboriginal students we reach, and we continue to expand our outreach to homeschool groups, the Francophone community, and students who are at risk of failing or dropping out of school. We have introduced scholarships and awards to include all students in BC regardless of their circumstances.

We introduced a new Award for Oratory and Presentation Skills. The 2012-13 recipients of this award impressed everyone with their visions for success at this year’s Business Laureates of BC Hall of Fame Gala, where they addressed an audience of over 650 business leaders that included His Royal Highness, The Duke of York.

One of our proudest accomplishments this year was our engagement of alumni. The newly created Ambassador Club, composed of recent JA graduates, has become an integral part of our stakeholder engagement strategy.

As we close this year, we wish a heartfelt thank you to our teachers, volunteers, donors, alumni, staff and Board of Directors for contributing to our success. Thanks to all of you, JA continues to prepare the next generation of business and community leaders, guaranteeing the future success of BC’s economy.

Student-venture companies “Boom”, “Wicked” and “yeS!” spent a day selling their products at richmond Centre mall. All three groups were participating in Junior Achievement’s Company Program.

entrePreneurshiPJunior Achievement has a number of programs that allow students to see and understand the role of business in our society. By collaborating with professional volunteer consultants to design, organize and operate a real business, students experience how a small enterprise functions. Creating an enterprise of their own is a transformational experience for many students who are inspired to explore entrepreneurism as a career goal.

Students participating in our Dollars with Sense program at panorama ridge Secondary in Surrey are interviewed by a City tV crew who are there to shine a light on Coast Capital Savings’ tremendous support of this highly demanded program.

work reAdinessJunior Achievement provides students with leadership and problem-solving skills to prepare them for the workforce. Programs encourage students to take a closer look at the advantages of staying in school and how the choices they make can positively impact their future dreams, aspirations and outcomes. JA provides students with the knowledge, attitudes and skills they will need for long-term career success.

Grade 9 students from every school in the kamloops School district gather at thompson rivers university

for a full day of JA’s Economics for Success.

finAnCiAl literACyJunior Achievement programs give students personal money management skills, challenging them to apply these concepts in their own lives. Activities teach students about effective spending and how to avoid credit and debt pitfalls. By learning how to make better economic decisions, students see how they can successfully manage changes in career and life directions.

Grade 5 students from the Sk’elep School of excellence run a car wash business using skills learned

in JA’s A Business of Our Own program. the local rCmp came out to support the students and have their

vehicles cleaned at this fun and profitable event.

Business BAsiCsA Business of Our Own engages elementary-school students in activities to apply their knowledge and skills to a real life situation. Students become the Presidents and CEOs of their very own retail sales business. A Business of Our Own helps students identify key success factors to turn personal and team performance into profit. From start to finish, students set up their retail sales stand, track profits and eventually distribute earnings. This is so much more than your conventional lemonade stand!

Since 1955 more than 350,000 students have participated in Junior Achievement of British Columbia programs. The memories and experiences the Alumni share capture the very best of Junior Achievement’s exciting record of success.

Our JABC Ambassador Club, launched in 2009, invites recent JA graduates to participate as volunteers at events, conferences and tradeshows. This past year, Ambassadors created an Alumni Board with an executive team whose purpose is to grow the club and create alumni events where participants can gather to network with each other and with business leaders in the community.
